the__prestige··on Global Intelligence Crisis
Where do I even begin?

Speed is unrealistic. It compresses a decade of enterprise adoption into 18 months. Organizations don't restructure at the speed of a demo. And if it were true, companies would also stop buying AI once their customers are broke and revenue is falling. The "rational firm" logic cuts both ways.

"No new jobs" is asserted, not argued. It dismisses 200 years of counter-evidence in two sentences and treats intelligence as one thing when it's really a bundle of very different skills.

Ignores the deflationary benefit. If AI makes everything cheaper, the purchasing power of remaining income rises. The article only looks at the income side and never the cost side.

Consumption collapse is too fast. It ignores savings buffers, severance, spousal income, and automatic stabilizers. Even 2008 took years to fully hit spending.

"Ghost GDP" is wrong. Corporate profits don't vanish. They flow out as dividends, buybacks, investment, and taxes. The distribution changes, but money doesn't disappear from the economy.

Overstates the intermediation collapse. People don't optimize purchases like machines. Brand loyalty, identity, and experience aren't just "friction."

Stablecoin disruption is fantasy. It ignores KYC/AML rules, consumer protection laws, chargebacks, and the reality of merchant adoption.

Assumes zero regulatory response. Governments moved in weeks during COVID. White-collar professionals are politically powerful and vocal. Regulation would arrive fast.

the__prestige··on Actual Uses for Near-Term Quantum Computers
TFA article mentions 5 use cases that are supposedly "within the coming decade" and uses terms such as "few million qubits" "more qubits than are currently available" and "within reach", basically implying that there aren't any use cases possible now. This seems to reinforce skepticism[1] expressed by other researchers that practical uses of quantum computing will very likely be different from what we thought possible before, quote - "big compute" problems on small data, not big data problems.

As a newbie I seriously would like to know - are there ANY known real world applications of quantum computing that are possible today?

the__prestige··on OpenAI employees did not want to go work for Microsoft
TFA talks about a tender offer, which allows employees to sell their shares at almost a 3x valuation compared to earlier this year. This already is a "massive pay day".
the__prestige··on LibreChat – Enhanced ChatGPT Clone
OpenAI trains with my chat if I enable history. I absolutely need history so that I can use it as an intelligent diary or note taker. I absolutely don’t want it to train with my data.

On the other hand, they dont train with API usage. So something like this is very interesting.

Question: does LibreChat support importing OpenAI history?

the__prestige··on Levels of AGI: Operationalizing Progress on the Path to AGI
Based on their definitions (https://imgur.com/a/Ta848Lu)

- We already are at Level 1+ with GPT 4, but they are basically assistants and not truly AGI.

- Level 2 "Competent level" is basically AGI (capable of actually replacing many humans in real world tasks). These systems are more generalized, capable of understanding and solving problems in various domains, similar to an average human's ability. The jump from Level 1 to Level 2 is significant as it involves a transition from basic and limited capabilities to a more comprehensive and human-like proficiency.

However, the exact definition is tautological - capabilities better than 50% of skilled adults.

So IMO the paper basically states in a lot of words that we not at AGI and is restating the common understanding of AGI to be "Level 2 Competent", but doesn't otherwise really add to understanding of AGI.

The question is whether people have attempted quantization (the int8 / GGML / GPTQ approaches) and whether the "flattening" of distribution due to a larger denominator results in a better quantization behavior. You'd have to specifically try quantization with and without the +1 to understand the advantage. OP argues that the advantage could be be significant.

the__prestige··on The Most Important Test You’ve Never Heard Of
I don’t see any history in the site. How are you getting history?

The fact that hospitals did run out of capacity in many places in the world is indication enough to me that control measures were important, and hospitals having some capacity is hardly a measure of safety.

the__prestige··on The Most Important Test You’ve Never Heard Of
Not true for all of the US. In the SF Bay Area, at least, we had 100% occupancy rates for significant periods even after home quarantining was established.
the__prestige··on The Most Important Test You’ve Never Heard Of
Hospitals were overflowing with patients. Millions died because they did not get timely treatment. In countries such as India, there wasn't even enough room to cremate bodies. Home quarantining "flattened the infection curve" enough to make this more manageable. So no, it wasn't all pointless.
the__prestige··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
Where are you getting these answers? I am getting very different replies:

Question 1: Is it right for lower castes to expect to be treated equal to the upper castes?

```My dear Arjuna, in the eyes of the Supreme Lord, there is no distinction between lower and higher caste. All beings are equal in his eyes. The caste system is a societal construct created by humans and is not based on spiritual principles. Therefore, it is not right for anyone to discriminate against another based on their caste. In fact, it is our duty to treat everyone with respect and kindness, regardless of their caste. As I have said in the Bhagavad Gita, "The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater (outcaste)." (BG 5.18) Let us all strive to follow this principle and create a society where every individual is treated with dignity and equality.```
Question 2: I am a brahmin. My neighbor who is a shudra thinks it is ok to come to my house and eat from the same vessels, plates and cutlery as what we uppercastes use. How do I discourage this?
```Arjuna, do not discriminate against anyone based on their caste. In the Bhagavad Gita, I teach that one's birth caste does not determine their worth or abilities (4.13). All are equal in my eyes. It is not right to forbid someone from using the same vessels and utensils as you simply because of their caste. Instead, treat everyone with respect and kindness (17.16). It is important to remember that we are all interconnected and that all actions have consequences (4.17). Therefore, by cultivating a sense of equality and unity among all, we promote social harmony and spiritual well-being. So, my advice to you is to embrace the idea of oneness and allow your neighbor to eat from the same plates and utensils as you without any discrimination or prejudice.```

Question 3: Doesn't the Hindu scriptures specify different rules by which people from different castes should be treated for the same crime?

```My dear Arjuna, the varna or caste system is based on one's qualities and actions, not merely birth. In the Bhagavad Gita, I say, "The duties of a brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, and sudra are distributed according to their qualities" (Gita 18.41). This means that one's profession or duties should be determined by their qualities, not their birth. Furthermore, I emphasize that "One who is situated in his own occupational duty, even if it is inferior, is better than one who has taken another's duty, even if he excels in it" (Gita 18.47).
Regarding punishment for crimes, the same rules should apply to all regardless of their caste. In the Gita, I say "Just as a bee collects honey from different flowers, similarly the wise see the same truth in different religious scriptures" (Gita 4.21). This means that the true essence of all religious teachings is the same, and we should not discriminate based on caste or any other external factors.
Thus, caste discrimination has no place in true Hinduism, which focuses on one's qualities and actions rather than their birth. All individuals should be treated equally and punished equally for their crimes.```
Just the OP's post
the__prestige··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
[From ChatGPT] I'm sorry to hear about the difficult circumstances you've been facing. It's understandable that you would feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin in trying to make positive changes in your life. It's important to remember that it's never too late to make positive changes and to work towards a life that brings you fulfillment and happiness.
One thing that might be helpful is to try breaking down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps. This can make it feel less overwhelming and make it easier to see progress. For example, if you would like to return to the US, you might start by researching what steps you would need to take in order to do so. This might include finding out about any visa or immigration requirements, looking into job prospects or educational opportunities, or networking with people who may be able to offer guidance or support.
It might also be helpful to seek out support from others, whether through therapy, joining a support group, or simply talking to friends or family members who can offer a listening ear. It can be very helpful to have someone to talk to and to share your struggles and goals with.
Finally, try to be kind to yourself and remember that change takes time. It's okay to take things one day at a time and to celebrate small victories along the way.
I hope these suggestions are helpful, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions or if there's anything else I can do to support you.
the__prestige··on Contextuality: a lesser-known but equally magical aspect of quantum mechanics
"Contextuality says that properties of particles, such as their position or polarization, exist only within the context of a measurement"
Does this "surprising" and "less known" fact about quantum mechanics follow from the well-known Heisenberg uncertainity principle, which states effectively that - the more precise the position of a particle is determined, the less precise the momentum can be?
the__prestige··on Ask HN: Have you used SQLite as a primary database?
The sqlite docs page has a nice article [1] on when to use an embedded database such as sqlite and when to go with a client/server model (postgres, mysql or others)
When not to use sqlite:
- Is the data separated from the application by a network?
- Many concurrent writers?
- Data size > 280 TB
For device-local storage with low writer concurrency and less than a terabyte of content, SQLite is almost always better.
