theNJR··on Bethesda's Starfield is a disgrace to game development and a slap in the face t
I tried playing on my gaming PC with a 3080 and an NVMe. It gives me major nausea, something that has never happened to me before (and I had a VR startup where I spent all day in a headset!).

I really wanted to dive into this game but I guess I’ll wait to see if something improves. From what I heard performance isn’t great on intel and NVIDIA machines.

Oh how I loved that show. Defined my childhood and technoptimism

I’m surprised and happy to see Greg posted here on HN. He’s my go to resource for all things SoCal gardening. I always look forward to his weekly newsletter and even have his calendar which I use to keep track of when I fertilize and do other major tasks.

If you’re in our usda zone he’s worth a follow.

theNJR··on Industry docs reveal makers of 'forever chemicals' covered up health dangers
What an infuriating article.

What is everyone’s pot and pan of choice these days? I just realized we are still using the nonstick gifted by my in laws. They need to go into the garbage.

Why do you think that is any better?

This.

I understand why these are SaaS offerings from a business POV, but don’t understand why there aren’t more options to run locally. Are gaming GPUs like a 3080 not powerful enough?

theNJR··on No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health
There are plenty of such 0% and drinks and they aren’t nearly as popular. People are after the effects, the taste is secondary.

Stop being so practical! I’m trying to complain about crows!
theNJR··on How to Befriend Crows?
Good until the post-holiday trash overflow I just dealt with.
theNJR··on How to Befriend Crows?
What if you want to end a crow relationship?

We have a murder of 50+ that roam our neighborhood. 3 of them hang out in my backyard and love to eat our fruit trees and hang out in the pool. I’m happy to share the pool, not so much the fruit. Especially our precious Asian pears!

These are big suckers and strut around the yard with more swagger than Salt Bae at the World Cup.

My biggest complaint is their trash day escapades. I got to spend ten minutes in the rain cleaning up after them yesterday.

The crows and the squirrels get a lot of my mindshare. I don’t know, maybe that’s some sort of gift.

theNJR··on Things I've noticed while visiting the ICU
My wife just gave birth and it was my first multi-night hospital stay. The midnight pokes and checks were infuriating. It also doesn’t help that dads aren’t the patient after a birth, so they aren’t fed or given a bed. Constant nurse changes were difficult too.

On the plus side, I was surprised at the decent quality of food given to my wife. Steamed vegetables and mid grade proteins with every meal.

After two nights we made the case to be discharged. Everyone, including nurses and family, thought we were crazy to leave so early. Best decision we made and my wife recovered great. With the built in iOS medication reminder app and a blood pressure monitor I was able to manage her just fine.

theNJR··on Digital books wear out faster than physical books
This is awesome advice!

And it turns out the library is less than a mile away from me. How cool!

theNJR··on Digital books wear out faster than physical books
I have this exact worry as a dad of a seven day old.

During pregnancy, my wife and I read various new parent books out loud to each other. The plan is to continue that with baby. Maybe she’ll associate the Kindle with reading, but my dad collects books, so I grew up absolutely surrounded by them. If he just had a big kindle library, not sure it would have had an effect

theNJR··on Sugar Substitutes Surprise
I’m surprised to hear you feel mentally miserable on longer fasts. I (and many others) report intense mental clarity. For me, everything slows down and becomes bright and clear. It’s really pleasant. Are you taking magnesium and sodium?

I’m tempted to comment on your seasonal health swings, but to each their own.
