the6threplicant··on Note-Taking and Personal Knowledge Management
I really thought Evernote would scratch this itch nearly a decade ago (or so it feels). But it ended up being a WORN service (Write-Once, Read-Never).

Would love something better than markup but not as CPU intensive as Evernote.

the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
This is a ridiculous way of looking at things. Galileo was persecuted by The Church not other scientists who supported him.

Fermi's paradox isn't what you've stated.

Listen to the scientists. Not the politicians. Not the military.

the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
And when we had the evidence we changed our minds. Just like it should be.

So the question should be why are so many people believing in aliens when there is so little evidence for them?

the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
Breaking Special Relativity is not some 15th century "oh, there's some lovely dirt down here" impressionable pleb. We have machines that can confirm SR to within ridiculous level.
the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
What do you want people to do.

I see lot of "close minded" people looking at the evidence and concluding that it's not enough evidence to conclude aliens are visiting us.

It looks like these UAPs are everywhere but the evidence is so low level that I wouldn't even conclude they aren't just planes or ducks instead.

the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
The people that believe that these UAP seem to think there is both a Fermi paradox and reverse Fermi Paradox at the same time.
the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
A lot of things would be demonstratively broken if Special Relativity is wrong.
the6threplicant··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
I want a whole group of scientists to investigate the evidence.

I don't trust the military or Congress since they're happy to spend money on ESP or telekinesis studies and still not be able to reach a conclusion.

Military pilots have mistaken Venus as a UAF.

I can't just trust an eyewitness account of something fishy as evidence for exterrestrial beings visiting us with faster than light speed vehicles.

the6threplicant··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
If scientists speak out they then get labelled as political. It's a lose-lose situation that scientists face.

Misinformation is like junk food. It triggers people's endorphins while scientific thinking is vegetables and fruits. It can never win.

the6threplicant··on Curiosity Is Better Than Being Smart?
Curiosity and not Smart: down the conspiracy rabbit hole you can go

Smart and not curious: who knows? psychopath?

Both: fun person to talk to at a party

the6threplicant··on Lunar Crater Radio Telescope on the Far-Side of the Moon (2020)
I presume that it would more feasible to do a dipole antenna based radio telescope like LOFAR to take advantage of the radio silence.
the6threplicant··on Who Owns the US National Debt?
My favourite how different the "home budget" and a national economy works is if you want to save some money for a trip you just stop spending a bit and keep the extra money in a savings account until needed. If an economy did that then the economy will contract, reducing peoples spending power and income.

It's like you're saving for you holidays and your hourly rate goes down because of it.

the6threplicant··on What we can learn from the 1918 flu pandemic
In other words it's following a logistics curve. This is what every pandemic does: the problem is that we can't know when the inflection point is. Sometimes it's quite early on, and sometimes it isn't. Plan for the latter, hope for the former.
the6threplicant··on Photographer Jacob Riis showed “How the Other Half Lives” in 1890s NYC (2017)
Absolutely worth it. You do need to book/reserve a tour.
the6threplicant··on We need to take CO2 out of the sky – an overview of climate tech
One of the problems I see with CO2 sequestration is that it will be a nice way for companies to suck at the teat of taxpayers the world over.

I'm sure Halliburton-like companies have a 3 step plan to be right at the front of the money firehose when governments are forced to reduce CO2 or face even bigger costs (both financially and politically) in the coming decades.

the6threplicant··on Year Without a Summer
Pretty much anything by James Burke, either video or print.
the6threplicant··on Doing Western students' homework is big business in Kenya
You need infrastructure. You need petrol/oil to power the machines to build the roads so you can build the electricity to be able to build the internet connectivity that you need.

The nations are wealthy but if the profits are siphoned off by both corruption and the international companies that own the mines, then the citizens don't see any of that money trickle down to them.

In these countries the educated leave very quickly unless they're employed by any of the above.

the6threplicant··on US Department of Justice Argues Assange Has No First Amendment Rights
They are inalienable rights first. It has nothing to do with citizenship. If I'm on US soil then I have (roughly) the same right as a US citizen. That's what so great about the Bill of Rights. (note there some specific clause for US citizens but they are labelled as such eg US president etc)
the6threplicant··on Goodbye, Clean Code
I get giddy with excitement whenever I see someone has rewritten/touched my code.

the6threplicant··on The crisis in physics is not only about physics
One could say that particle physics is more a victim of its own success.
the6threplicant··on Climate change has turned permafrost into a carbon emitter
The opposite is happening. We're making the oceans more acidic.

Isn't that the whole point of the Senate?
the6threplicant··on The sci-fi cities of Bezos’s Blue Origin derive from his teacher Gerard O’Neill
It's the same logic as "If we don't use antibiotics in cattle they'll all die!". Totally ignoring the unintended consequences of antibiotic resistance in humans.
the6threplicant··on The Guardians of the French Language Are Deadlocked

the6threplicant··on Stomach of Dead Whale Contained 'Nothing but Nonstop Plastic'
> I'm not sure if what we do in the U.S. and Europe will have much impact

It's not like all of that plastic is just domestic consumption. Right? We just exported our negative externalities. We don't really have a moral high-ground here. Even if you are a Jedi master.

the6threplicant··on MacOS Finder Shows Zero-Size Folders
I seem to find different coloured folders and inconsistent line spacing when listing folders in column view but not this problem.

Your neighbours love you now.

the6threplicant··on Nasa’s Mars Rover Opportunity Concludes a 15-Year Mission
As one of the PIs said at the NASA briefing. If you can bring Opportunity home I'll prefer if you bring back 180kg of Mars rocks. We already know what the rover is made of. :)
the6threplicant··on Dutch radio amateurs image far side of the Moon using Chinese satellite data
We need to start using the term "amateur" in it's original sense to mean "for the love of". This is why people call themselves amateur astronomers, say, not because they failed astronomy class but because they love their hobby of astronomy.
