the6threplicant··on The Dangerous Irrelevance of String Theory
I like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8ccXzM3x8A (The case for String Theory). It shows that there is a natural progression to String Theory that very few other theories have.
the6threplicant··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
When we start using voice activation commonly I'm hoping we're going back to offices.
the6threplicant··on Faster, Better, Cheaper – The Art of Making Software
There will always be a war between developers and sales. Sales always needs a foot in the door - and incomplete software can get them there. The customer (and sales team) might even expect faulty software, but just as long as you can demonstrate some features can be delivered that might be enough to get the sales through (and pay for the better quality).

It's great that we want great software and even make the customer be part of some feedback cycle but sometimes you need to play "dirty" to make your company survive, and making your sales department happy is one of them. A good sales department knows the business and requirements better than any developer and sometimes you need to listen to them and not "agile your way around it".

Too many drinks with the VP Sales guy yesterday. :/

the6threplicant··on Why do many math books have so much detail and so little enlightenment? (2010)
This is why lectures are so important compared to a text book.

In a lecture you try and emphasis how some things are important - while other things you can hand wave away. A textbook can't do that.

the6threplicant··on How Australia Bungled Its $36B High-Speed Internet Rollout
Imagine if Labor won.

* A robust FTTP that would be paid back nicely, and

* A carbon tax that would now be an "emissions trading scheme" doing it's part to reduce carbon emissions.

the6threplicant··on EPA dismisses half of its scientific advisers on key board
> call ourselves Computer Scientists, some Software Engineers,

Which means you are not scientists. You might be very positive towards it but I've met a lot of the above and seen some very anti-science rhetoric from them.

the6threplicant··on NASA's Peer-Reviewed EM Drive Paper Has Finally Been Published
Why is it that EM advocates always seem to be dark matter-deniers? There's observational evidence for DM, a lot more than for the EM drive.
the6threplicant··on A faster BBC News front page
It's a great site but internationally the ads ruin the experience. You think you've clicked on a link but the site still hasn't loaded all of its ads and you have clicked on the wrong link.

Also waiting 30 seconds for a video ad to see 10 seconds of content is kinda stupid.

the6threplicant··on The Guardian Pulls Out of Facebook’s Instant Articles and Apple News
> This article was amended on 29 December 2016 to remove a sentence in which it was asserted that Assange “has long had a close relationship with the Putin regime”. A sentence was also amended which paraphrased the interview, suggesting Assange said “there was no need for Wikileaks to undertake a whistleblowing role in Russia because of the open and competitive debate he claimed exists there”. It has been amended to more directly describe the question Assange was responding to when he spoke of Russia’s “many vibrant publications”.
