thawaway1837··on Apple M1 foreshadows Rise of RISC-V
I don’t get this.

You’re basically locking yourself to a single development eco system, and a highly limited deployment eco system.

It’s not clear what the benefits of either are either. I get that the MacBook gets great performance for battery life but the majority of work is gonna be done in desktop settings, so simply using more/equally powerful x86 chips is only gonna cost you a few dollars a developer per year in electricity costs.

And all that despite the fact that your development is on Docker which doesn’t even have a working solution for the workflow you’re considering at the moment.

thawaway1837··on Masks Work. Really. We’ll Show You How
There’s more studies than controlled ones.

Sociological studies strongly suggest that masks do work.

For example, there was a recent study that compared COVID hospitalization rates of districts in Tennessee that had mask mandates vs those which didn’t and the areas with mask mandates had significantly lower disease spread.

thawaway1837··on BitTorrent v2
Wasn’t the original Skype that Microsoft paid billions for also based on BitTorrent technology?

Not BitTorrent exactly, but close enough that if the blockchain spinoff was bought for that much the blockchain folks would certainly consider (rightfully IMO) a victory in the blockchain column.

thawaway1837··on Does Facebook pay Apple 30% of revenue derived from ads made within its iOS app?
Premium = Too large to be bullied by Apple
thawaway1837··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Vivaldi is the true successor of Opera, more so than the Opera we have today.
thawaway1837··on Why I Use Suckless Tools
Right, until random builds start breaking in Visual Studio because some CSPROJ somewhere because visual studio is looking at the wrong DLL since there is no deterministic way to determine where VS will look for DLLs under many circumstances (maybe it’s looking at the GAC. Maybe it’s looking at the many various paths for Nuget. Maybe it’s looking at some of the default build paths) and picks up a random unpredictable version.

And since you can’t even look at the CSPROJ within VS without gymnastics debugging isn’t even easy to get started with.

thawaway1837··on Ask HN: Have you ever gone without a computer or phone for an extended period?
I was without a phone for a out 3 months.

After the first week of constant anxiety because it constantly felt like I had forgotten something, it was incredible, getting used to not having Google Maps at all times, and drawing up the courage to ask strangers for help with stuff like using their stores phone to call a friend who I was waiting for, for directions, etc. it was absolutely incredible.

I felt like a literal weight had been lifted off my shoulder and felt more independent and free than ever before. I explored a ton more, and had a great time overall. I was also less stressed out and did much better at work due to the significantly reduced distractions.

Of course, I was completely single at the time, which made all of this possible. I’m not sure it would be doable either when in a relationship or married.

Also, a lot of people are commenting about retreats and stuff, which also I have done and is great. However, living your normal life without being hyper connected and your face in a screen at all times (basically going back to the 90s) is a very different and refreshing experience.

thawaway1837··on What the Hell Is a Deno?
The security stuff for NodeJS is really frustrating. If anything, NodeJS is more secure than something like the JVM or C++. If I include a 3rd party package in the JVM, I have absolutely no guarantee that it will work well, much like in Node. In fact, in Node, I can actually read the source code and see what the package is, running is doing. In nearly every other environment, you may simply have access to a binary, with maybe some interface info.

So why do people not throw the same kind of fit about nearly every other programming environment as they do for Node/NPM? And frankly why do those other environemnts not have the ridiculous security breaches we have seen in Node/NPM land?

The real problem with Node/NPM i suspect is a lack of a standard library. Simply having a standard library would have greatly reduced dependency and package hell. Further, a standard library would mean people would be more willing to write a little more code rather than include a new dependency.

thawaway1837··on Anders Tegnell defends Sweden's virus approach
Sweden’s strategy failed on its own terms. There is absolutely no arguing that. Their first goal was to protect the vulnerable, and they failed miserably at that. Fundamentally because Tegnell resisted the fact that asymptomatic carriers existed.

One could argue, like some Iraq war proponents do, that the idea was ok for Sweden, but the failure was in execution. But one can not argue that it wasn’t a significant failure.

thawaway1837··on In Secretly Recorded Phone Calls, Officers Say Innocent People Were Framed
The federal government stopped giving the police military weapons. They also had consent degrees with several departments that helped improve things.

These and others are all things the current administration has reversed and is almost certainly playing a huge role into why things have gotten so bad.

thawaway1837··on Google Is Not God of the Web
They’re arguing that the whole idea behind the web is that different people can try different things with different priorities and constraints.

The priorities shouldn’t be dictated by a single company.

I don’t fault Google for what they are doing (besides the AMP stuff). The problem the author is talking about is largely because google is the de facto way pretty much the entire world finds new stuff.

If website discovery was driven by blofs and the like wns people then added the stuff they liked to their RSS readers then the authors issue would be resolved.

Unfortunately that world doesn’t exist anymore and Google’s preferences end up dictating what all websites prioritize.

thawaway1837··on Google Is Not God of the Web
I think this is true of any “answering engine” in an ideal world. In an ideal world, it would act as a function and return a single output for any input, because any particular question should ideally only have a single correct answer.
thawaway1837··on But no, 80-column terminals in 2020 isn't “reasonable” any more
Well, Linus has already said he doesn’t care about your (or anybody else’s) accessibility issues.

Is the kernel getting impossible to compile on anything less than a monster $2500 gaming rig? Too bad. Stop being poor or from a poor country.

Does the code require a $1000 monitor to be readable? Same.

Do you need a larger size font because of age? Well pop your Benjamin Button polls coz Linus Torvalds dont care.

thawaway1837··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
The 0.5-1% fatality rate would be a LOT higher if all those people did fall sick at the same time.

Hospital systems would collapse because of the number of sick people. Doctors and nurses would be missing because they would almost all likely fall sick.

And people who would not die of COVID would die of other stuff because healthcare systems would have collapsed.

This is what happened in Italy. This is what was happening in NYC for a few days at its worst. This is what is about to happen in Brazil and possibly in India.

thawaway1837··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
In about 3 months. For a disease that was growing exponentially before action was taken and even now is only just stopped growing in countries where action was taken.

And no mosquito outbreak has caused entire hospital systems to collapse in various parts of the world.

thawaway1837··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
Umm, for one thing because going into lockdown wouldn’t do anything to prevent death by mosquito?

You do know that mosquitoes have wings and can move from place to place without humans right?

thawaway1837··on U.K. Plans Citizenship for Hong Kong Residents in Row with China
Is there any reason whatsoever to believe the US would help India in a conflict with China?

I see absolutely no evidence of this being the case. The US has never in the history of India stepped in to help India.

In all likelihood, if IndanandnChina came to blows, the US would simply sit aside and not participate.

thawaway1837··on OpenSilver is a modern, plugin-free, open-source reimplementation of Silverlight
Because there was no open source alternative, the web was a terrible app platform (and frankly it’s still not as good as Silverlight was a decade ago).

In an alternative universe where Silverlight, instead of Flash, had become the de facto standard before the iPhone, I suspect we would likely have moved onto something like OpenSilver instead of HTML5 as the backbone for web applications.

Flash was designed for tiny animations and somehow became an application platform. Sikverlight was actually designed as an application platform and it showed, in how much better it was.

thawaway1837··on India’s contact tracing app is going open source
A lot of people?

Relevantly, a lot of developers and ops folks who need overlaps with US hours.

thawaway1837··on Today’s Javascript, from an outsider’s perspective
I’m pretty sure the author isn’t teaching anything but is instead pointing out the unfortunately common pitfalls when having someone new start with the JS ecosystem.
thawaway1837··on Half of Fox News Viewers Believe Bill Gates Wants to Use Vaccine to Track You
If Bill Gates wanted to do that, wouldn’t he have done it through, I don’t know, Windows? It was only the most widespread OS until a decade ago with a market share of over 90% worldwide.
thawaway1837··on Wikipedia Is Badly Biased
And he mentions Solyndra.

By that logic every Venture capitalist’s Wikipedia page should have a massive section called scandals that lists all their investments that did not pay out.

thawaway1837··on Windows package manager does not permit opting out of telemetry
Right, because people are gonna provide core dumps in their feedback.

Again, if you don’t want telemetry, don’t use the build Microsoft uses specifically to collect telemetry.

Don’t complain that the build MS uses only for telemetry requires you to provide telemetry.

thawaway1837··on Windows package manager does not permit opting out of telemetry
The whole point of an insider build is to collect telemetry.
thawaway1837··on Microsoft loves Linux – a little too much?
There are SO MANY Linux distributions that overlapping a name is hardly a big deal (and the registration is not that big a deal either...as the article points out itself, despite the registration, there is a Linux distro also named Maui).

The Microsoft employee’s response was pretty bad, but in a company with hundreds of thousands of devs, one inappropriate response by a developer hardly says anything.

Edit: He’s not even an employee. He’s a Microsoft MVP. That’s like complaining that Red Hat is evil based on what a random programmer with a RH certification says.

thawaway1837··on U.S. Birthrates Fall to Record Low
No one I know wants to have a child.

The primary reason? It’s super expensive. And people my age entered the workforce right before the Great Recession, which hammered their wages and they lost years of salary growth, followed by not even a decade later, a pandemic, which will do worse.

While raising a child continues to get more expensive.

thawaway1837··on U.S. mulls paying companies, tax breaks to pull supply chains from China
It doesn’t help that the US backed out of a policy solution that would actually be cheap and orders of magnitude more effective than anything that they have cooked up since in the TPP.

Backing out of it also means that the rest of the world is unlikely to trust the US on a similar effort anymore.

thawaway1837··on If You Want to Be a Senior Developer, Stop Focusing on Syntax
I’m curious if you programmed professionally before SO.

I feel the average junior developer’s, or even senior developer’s, for that matter, code was a lot worse than the average SO response, which has now become the baseline for all types of devs, so their code is at worst as bad.

thawaway1837··on Walmart says it will discontinue Jet
This is unsurprising. The Jet team was basically picked apart and focused on Walmart.com and other Walmart initiatives as soon as it was bought.

I’m surprised Walmart kept the brand going in the first place, since the focus was clearly on Walmart properties (including the logistics tech stack, etc).

thawaway1837··on Ask HN: Is there still a place for native desktop apps?
Isn’t that more of an Electron issue?

I mean, is anyone clamouring for VS Code, for example, to be rewritten in native toolkits?
