thargor90··on A method to promote sleep in crying infants using the transport response [pdf]
I guess oscillating pain is also "chronic pain" and you want calibrate for that.
thargor90··on A method to promote sleep in crying infants using the transport response [pdf]
This is not how SIDS works.

Children just stop breathing. Some newer research suggests this is a genetic issue.

Of course there is misdiagnosis for children that suffocate because of toys/blankets.

thargor90··on Java is very fast, if you don’t create many objects
Sometimes arrays are not an option, because objects may not be in memory at all times. A fun trick we use is to have the iterator be attached to the object lifecycle, so that repeated (parallel) iteration does not require multiple iterators. I can't remember the exact percentage, but this change alone increased our throughput by 20-25%.
thargor90··on Java is very fast, if you don’t create many objects
You only need to take care of object allocation count for hot paths. You can still use java "best practices" for everything around that (if they are what you want)
thargor90··on My Lack of Attention
that is very sad. I would not have thought that Isaac would react in that way. Communication on the Frosthaven updates did not sound like that.

Gloomhaven helper was a high quality product and improved playability by a lot. Esoteric games did Cephalofair a great service. Sad to see it end this way.

thargor90··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
crypto was sold as a deflationary investment, because supply of some crypto currencies is limited, i.e. no more than 21 million bitcoins are planned to be mined in total.
thargor90··on Ask HN: Do you trust solo entrepreneurs?
I consider myself to be a solo developer/entrepreneur.

Some tips to look like a small business (which is fine for most clients) instead of solo developer: * Get incorporated * Get "advisors" or "partners" that you can list, but do not actually do any work * Get freelancers that you can list, but only hire when required * Hire 1-2 part time students and let them answer calls or and do accounting/busy work

Last but not least, just have a great product and customers will work around their due diligence processes ;-)

thargor90··on Ask HN: I found a pretty extreme data leak and I'm not sure what to do
The "right thing to do" is to contact your local CERT (don't give personal information and best use a throwaway email over TOR. Don't trust your local authorities).

thargor90··on Snowman native code to C/C++ decompiler for x86/x86_64/ARM
I would guess that writing a decompiler that gets c semantics 100% correct is also really hard. Think about inline assembly, memory barriers, etc.

I don't think this would work, unless the c file just contains inline assembly.

thargor90··on I liked the idea of carbon offsets until I tried to explain it
Supply chains are not 100% transparent.

We know how bad one unit of "cigarette" is for our health, but we don't know how bad one unit of xxx is for the environment. An apple can have a co2 footprint of multiple tons of co2 or zero tons of co2. We can't know for sure.

thargor90··on The flaws of distro hopping and asking other people about their OS of choice
I chose debian, because it is mostly boring and "outdated", but quite secure. My focus is to solve problems, not bother with new distribution software.

Also nowadays with containers its quite hard not to get some software running.

thargor90··on I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now
Just wanted to add that in Austria you have:

* 25 paid days off (vacation)

* + 13 paid days (national holidays/bank holidays)

* + 1 personal paid day off (this is quite new)

* + 5-10 paid days off to care for a sick child

* + 1-3 paid days off for moving/wedding

* + up to 40 days paid sick leave (per case)

* + 40-80 days paid off for pregnant women (Mutterschutz)

* + some companies/contracts offer more than that

additionally to that you have:

* Karenz - up to two years maternity leave (paid, but capped)

* Bildungskarenz - up to one year education leave (paid, but capped)

* Arbeitslosengeld - unemployment insurance for at least six months, but up to 5 years (paid, but capped)

All this stuff does not depend on your employer. For some

(everything based on 5 day workweek)

thargor90··on Ask HN: Why does Cloudflare/hCaptcha care so much about buses, boats and trains?
captchas mix classified and unclassified data. Only if you get the classified data correct a users data is used to classify the unclassified data. Also the same picture is shown to multiple people to improve confidence.
thargor90··on BusKill – A USB kill cord for laptops
Yes, we are spoiled.

I'm not sure it's even possible to have a valid contract with an unknown party...

thargor90··on List Homomorphisms and Parallelism
also mssp ([3,-1,1] ++ [1,-1,3]) = 6, right?
thargor90··on Why wild foxes led you to treasure in Skyrim
it doesn't know density. density is a property of the triangle placement. More triangles in "dense" areas. Pick a random triangle, you are likely to fall into a dense area.

thargor90··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
The public does not have proof that USDT is collateralized with real life assets. I'm not sure about USDC.
thargor90··on Why Learn Prolog in 2021?
I've worked with Prolog and ASP (Answer Set Programming) in some planning/optimization projects. In my experience in every case ASP had better expressiveness.

If you are seriously considering logic programming, please do not stop with prolog, but also take a look at ASP.

For anyone with a different experience than mine - what is your reason to stick to prolog instead of use ASP?
