tgb29··on Startup School Beijing
I have the priveledge of being around Chinese students who are studying in the US. Two comments I've heard recently:

'Doing research in China is the dream'

'I'll move back to China after I graduate; there's more opportinuty for startups there.'

tgb29··on Amazon to Acquire Whole Foods for $13.7B
I do my banking and food shopping at Walmart; I wonder if Whole Foods will offer this. Probably not, but I'm still excited to see Amazon moving into the food retail business.
tgb29··on (2007) Microsoft Is Dead
Is Microsoft still dead? It seems like they've done a better job at reacting to their competitors.
tgb29··on Juice may taste good, but unlike the fruit, it’s not healthy
The title was changed after my comment.
tgb29··on AI Predicted Trump's Dismal 100-Day Approval Rating Weeks Before He Took Office
I thought we learned during the 2016 campaign that most polls misrepresent reality...
tgb29··on Juice may taste good, but unlike the fruit, it’s not healthy
Misleading title -- Vegetable juice isn't bad like fruit juice. We should be targeting "sugar" and not "fruit" or "juice." Sugar from fruit isn't as bad as processed sugar, but from my experiences, too much fruit has the same negative effects as eating candy or sugar laced cereal. Fruit in moderation seems to be ok.
tgb29··on USA Facts – Federal, state, and local data from government sources
Tax all churches on donations and property assets and use these revenues to fund Social Security. The Constitution grants the Pope and his equivalents the freedom of religion; not the freedom to avoid taxes owed to the Federal Government.
tgb29··on Deep Patient Predicts Patients Future from Health Records
I like the paper's emphasis on pre-processing the data. Once the data is properly organized, I have no doubt that a variety of ML algorithms can be applied to reveal different insights.
tgb29··on Monsanto Weed Killer Roundup Faces New Doubts on Safety in Unsealed Documents
More advancements in computational biology and genetics will allow us to more precisely determine the effects of glyphosate on public health. Until we have better tools, there isn't enough evidence to make a judgment against Monsanto. However, the moment we are able to make the connection between poor agricultural practices and damages to health, a multi-billion dollar industry will be created for lawyers, and they will hold these companies acccountable.
tgb29··on Octopuses and squids can rewrite their RNA
Do you have a better metaphor?
tgb29··on Snapchat will file for IPO next week
A transfer of wealth to Los Angeles -- Let's hope this can help the movie industry.
tgb29··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
I'm disappointed in YCombinator and SamA's attitude towards Trump and his supporters throughout this campaign. However, it's not YCombinator's fault, and I will blame the Mainstream Media for successfully distorting the views of so many smart and good Americans.
tgb29··on Pamela Anderson Op-Ed: Take the Pledge – No More Indulging Porn
...coming from the woman who became famous from posing nude and creating a sex (porn) tape.

Calling all porn viewers "losers" is wrong; is this the correct label for those who suffer from a porn addiction?

What about the couple who watches porn to enhance their sex lives? Are all viagra users and sex toy users losers also?

I'm all for regulating the porn industry but I cannot take her campaign seriously.

tgb29··on If You’re Building a Startup You Need to Move to Phoenix (Not Silicon Valley)
I'm living in Las Vegas right now, but Phoenix is one of my favorite cities. For me, the benefits include the low cost of living, the low stress traveling by car and public transportation, and a diverse nightlife.

I grew up in NJ and I prefer 110 with low humidity over 85 and high humidity. The summer heat is tough mid-day, but the mornings and nights are really nice. I lived in PHX the most recent winter and had no complaints, and fall and spring are beautiful.

I'm not convinced yet Phoenix is the best city for a startup, but it does depend on the type of business you're getting into. I think Phoenix is a great city if you want to grow your company and expand operations with a new office.

The demographic is unique in Phoenix, and it's still hard for me to understand why people think differently. I find it amazing how different the demographic is than Las Vegas, which is also a desert and only 4.5 hours away. I really like the suburbs of Las Vegas, but I would move to Phoenix again if I was involved in a meaningful project.

tgb29··on How Marissa Mayer Failed to Turn Yahoo Around
Your evidence convinces me to agree with your position.

On my mind always is the Yahoo Fantasy Football product. In the past few years, the NFL has grown and other fantasy products have grown in value. Why was Yahoo not able to do the same? Why didn't they leverage the value of their sports products?

tgb29··on Google veterans head off on their own to work on self-driving trucks
Maybe some jobs will be replaced, but the industry is facing a shortage of truck drivers. One of the most common job listings on Craigslist is for truck drivers with paid training. The lifestyle of a truck driver can be brutal and unhealthy.
tgb29··on Warren Buffett and Dan Gilbert Unite in Bid to Acquire Yahoo
When I consider Yahoo's value, I think of email, fantasy football, news, and tumblr. All four seem to be struggling when compared to their alternatives, but each of the products appear to have great potential value. It's hard to determine the quality of Mayer's work as CEO; some decisions were good, some look bad. I'm not confident she is a product person, and this is based on her management of Tumblr and the lack of development in email functionality and UI.

I could be wrong. I do go to Yahoo news everyday and it's not a bad service. It's fun to think about what the world would be today if Yahoo acquired Facebook LOL.

tgb29··on YouTube’s New Messenger Means You’ll Never Have to Leave YouTube
I agree that there can be low caliber comments, but some comments provide helpful new insights on the content. Additionally, the funniest comments I've ever seen are on YouTube videos. I currently don't use any messenger apps (I use FB messages in browser) but I would likely be a user of a Youtube Messenger.
tgb29··on Homeless alone
Ithaca is a special place, I agree.
tgb29··on YouTube introduces six-second Bumper ads
I agree with you. Youtube is one of my favorite apps, but I cannot tolerate the advertisements. If I think of all the things that annoy me the most in the world; Youtube ads are in the top 3. I can, however, deal with 6 second ads, and it's likely they'll be more effective on me. I have no problems with SnapChat and Facebook ads and there are times I'm engaged with the message being presented.
tgb29··on Hard Tech is Back
Good post. Congrats to Cruise for the acquisition and to YC for generating a return on their investment. There are definitely opportunities in AI-narrow applications using machine learning-and biotechnology right now.
tgb29··on Scientists can’t agree whether salt is killing us
No medical condition found yet and the doctors so far say I'm healthy and overthinking. My theory is that my central nervous system is weak, but I haven't proven this and I haven't found a doctor who believes me.

Could be a medical condition, a diet issue, could be a mind issue - anxiety/depression, or it could be that from training as an endurance athlete, and now that I've stopped running my body is having trouble adapting. I read some research with 4 groups: male endurance trained, female endurance trained, male not trained, female no trained. After tests , male endurance trained had a heart pattern change and the other 3 subjects didn't have the same change. From 14-23 I trained at higher levels for distance running and now I do light walking.

I consider myself to be an active thinker, meaning that my mind is always contemplating some topic. Does my brain burn more calories than Expected and does it need certain nutrition to maintain health?

The diZiness is a miscommunication between the heart and the brain.

I don't know..I've had dark chocolate and granola trail mix near me between meals the last 2 days and I've had no dizziness.

tgb29··on Scientists can’t agree whether salt is killing us
My problem has been that if I stand up to quickly, I have a moment of dizziness. There are many variables; blood pressure, blood sugar, nervous system, altitude etc.

The more aware I am of my diet and how nutrition affects my body, I find the more sensitive I become to changes.

I cut coffee, bread, sugar, and beef/pork. I would eat very nutritious meals, and my energy levels and body felt amazing, but the stand up and be dizzy became more common.

Was I going through withdrawal? Is my body to accustomed to eating these foods? Should my theory be, "sugar and bread is ok as long as I eat other nutritious meals?"

I'm not sure, I'm still experimenting, and I'm utilizing the final month of my insurance with my parents to figure this out.

tgb29··on Scientists can’t agree whether salt is killing us
Same here. I recently cut sugar and bread products and I experienced random dizziness. I was eating plenty of fruit and I was eating natural sugars. I decided to experiment one day; had 4 donuts, bread and butter, and my body felt better.

Now the plan is to avoid processed, avoid preservatives, and move towards more natural and organic. I went to the doctor and they said don't wait more than 3-4 hours between meals.
