tgarma1234··on We found over 10000 bugs in various open source projects
In other news: people who do things in their spare time often make mistakes and do slipshod work.
tgarma1234··on Large Percentages of American Students Perform Above Grade Level
Pretty sure we are all above average now.

But seriously, it seems like schools have really drifted towards programs that enhance self-esteem and build confidence rather than making school the narcissistic insult it was when I was kid. I think that is fine. For the most part you can learn everything you actually want to know or need to know yourself later in life. It would be great if every kid left school thinking they were really good at things and had the confidence to get out there and try.

Well the main problem I had with One Drive, which is why I started using Google Drive and Dropbox exclusively was this issue: https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forums/262982-onedrive/sugges...

You share a folder, update a file and then the other person does not get the update to that file, so then they are sitting there on the phone with you saying "no I don't see the updated file" and you have to have them login to the web version and basically download the file to their one drive. That happened to me several times and I just gave up on One Drive. I don't know if they fixed that. Yes, it syncs things for YOUR folders but it will not sync things to shared folders.

tgarma1234··on Responsive HTML Email Templates
OK! So funny I have used that freebie one for a few years. That's why I knew it the second I saw it. That's been a very useful template and I really appreciated finding it on github a long time ago. Use it for transactional emails literally all the time. Thanks for putting it up. By the way for the inlining I use premailer. That's a good service.

Are those from Lee Munroes github account? Yup.

Note the copy that says: "Sometimes you need..."

So why on earth are they $50 now?

tgarma1234··on “CPUs are optimized for video games”
I really find it hard to believe that people for whom such an interest in security at the CPU level would buy "retail" processors like you and me have access to. I am no expert in the field but it just seems weird that there isn't a market for and producer of specialized processors that are more militarized or something. Why does everyone have access to the same Intel chips? I doubt that's actually the case. Am I wrong?
tgarma1234··on This JPEG is also a webpage
Well this will certainly appeal to Steganography enthusiasts and perverts who have clumsily been loafing around .onion sites for years and who now finally have a way to share content in the clear. And of course the NSA, FBI and CIA are suddenly stuck trying to figure out why this goofy squirrel is so popular in Yemen.

mv squirrel.html squirrel.jpg sudo apt-get install steghide steghide embed -cf squirrel.jpg -ef secret.txt mv squirrel.jpg squirrel.html

And voila...

One drive doesn't sync files the way dropbox or gdrive do and it's super annoying. Cortana is no better than Siri or Now in that it basically just sets a timer or dials a contact and everything else in my experience is chock full of irrelevant links and spamming listings. The one thing I actually appreciate with Windows 10 in particular is that the Weather Live tile is good and doesn't have Accuweather or the Weather Channel banner ads in it. I am glad they went with just giving you with weather. My LG tablet's weather app is a banner ad crapfest and my iPhone's weather app is pretty much useless by comparison. Why can't everyone just show me whether it's going to rain in the next 15 minutes without subjecting me to ludicrous ads. Seriously. Thank you Windows for that at least.
tgarma1234··on Humpback whales around the globe are mysteriously rescuing animals from orcas
I wish we could have a big long term experiment where maybe we try to teach the whales to let us know if they understand altruism and whether they could be taught to communicate an intention to us directly by flipping a switch to activate lights or something like that. It seems like whales are aware of what they are doing in a deeper way than other animals but we just don't know how to access their intentions through communication.
tgarma1234··on Why don't companies use FreeBSD as much in production as Linux?
I agree and especially it should be noted that Ubuntu and RedHat had huge marketing budgets compared to pretty much everyone else for the last decade. Nobody really pushes for FreeBSD in business settings because there is no social capital that comes from doing so. All three require a lot of skill to manage but that skill seems lest costly for Red Hat and Ubuntu even though it's not necessarily true. That's the power of marketing.
tgarma1234··on What is a Proof?
After Gentzen introduced the idea of a the sequent calculus and the idea of a Turing Machine was shown to be a complete answer to the idea of what a "computable function" is, I think the answer to the question "what is a proof" is really something along the lines of: a proof is a kind of computable function. Trying to spell out what kind of computable functions they are is a big part of one of the main outstanding problems of mathematics known as the P v NP problem. In other words, you recognize these drawings as "proofs" when you are trained to see them but nobody really knows how to define a general procedure that will output all of the correct drawings correctly (using whatever symbolism or notation you prefer). Hence the digression on proof assistants. I mean: you encounter the overall idea of producing logical drawings that demonstrate mathematical truths in elementary school geometry and then try to make those concepts more precise (as David Hilbert did) all the way through to research level mathematical logic and even then, after learning concepts that take years to master, you will still never quite know how to answer the question posed in the title of the blog post.
tgarma1234··on Your Phone Has an FM Chip. So Why Can’t You Listen to the Radio?
I have AT&T and to be honest I would rather listen to NPR on the radio rather than streaming/using my data. My data rolls over. So wasting it on something I could get for free anyway doesn't seem fair.
tgarma1234··on Don’t support laws you are not willing to kill to enforce (2014)
Absolutely agree and I find it baffling we would even be typing this. Breaking laws should not always be punishable by death even if the law you are breaking is "don't resist police authority". Sheesh. "Off with their heads!" is the punishment for everything? That doesn't seem reasonable. There are lots of laws I agree with but that I wouldn't say someone should die if they break it.
tgarma1234··on Coursera courses preserved by Archive Team
I have taken a couple of Coursera courses on R and Stats. They basically give you a brief outline of some topics you might want to pursue more in depth and they give you access to a discussion forum. I haven't found that this method of learning/teaching is very useful. There seems to me to be a huge opportunity waiting to be developed if someone can make a site like that but with more interactive elements AND where the learning/teaching is based on sound educational principles that can be demonstrated to effectively result in skills mastery. As it is now, Coursera is basically skimming cash off of the internet's insatiable google searching for information, like for example someone might google "Learn R" and then fall into the trap of paying $49 for a class that consists of nothing but videos really without having a clue about whether or not the videos really work to communicate knowledge or even whether the videos are touching on anything meaningful. If it hadn't been for the "Johns Hopkins Data Science Course" branding on the class I signed up for I wouldn't have fallen for it I am sure.
