tfolbrecht··on MinIO Is Dead, Long Live MinIO
Only if they'd taken contributions without authors signing over their rights.
tfolbrecht··on Docker Hub Is Down
I usually do upstream image mirroring as part of CI. Registries are built into GitLab, AWS (ECR), GitHub, etc
tfolbrecht··on Docker Hub Is Down
There's a registry image for OCI containers that is pretty painless to set up and low maintenance, can use s3 as a storage backend.

https://hub.docker.com/_/registry

Your git provider probably also has a container registry service built in.

tfolbrecht··on A brief history of code signing at Mozilla
I use jsign and AWS KMS. It's a lot less expensive than a full on HSM or "cloud HSM" service.

There's a lot to it, and expect a ton of a back and forth emails with a CA to get an EV Cert.

Here's some example code for generating the CSR (Certificate signing request) to submit to a CA.

tfolbrecht··on The essays of Michel de Montaigne online
Thank you for your efforts.

One of my favorite quotes of all time:

"’Tis an absolute and, as it were, a divine perfection, for a man to know how loyally to enjoy his being. We seek other conditions, by reason we do not understand the use of our own; and go out of ourselves, because we know not how there to reside. ’Tis to much purpose to go upon stilts, for, when upon stilts, we must yet walk with our legs; and, when seated upon the most elevated throne in the world, we are but seated upon our breech." — Michel de Montaigne, Essays, "Of Experience"

I like the contemporary translations floating around the web "even on the highest throne in the world, we still sit on our ass"

tfolbrecht··on Gokapi: Lightweight selfhosted Firefox Send alternative with AWS S3 support
I’m down, I think this is an awesome idea.
tfolbrecht··on Gokapi: Lightweight selfhosted Firefox Send alternative with AWS S3 support
If this is something you’re interested in it can be reimplemented on CloudFlare workers super easily using the awssdk for s3 (R2) and with D1 as the DB.
tfolbrecht··on Serverless-registry: A Docker registry backed by Workers and R2
The docker registry container supports S3 as a storage backend you could use it locally

You can also `docker image save` then write the tarball to S3, then load to use.

tfolbrecht··on Peerfetch – Peer-to-Peer HTTP over WebRTC
Not with the three major browsers and NAT unfortunately.

tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: What distributed file system would you use in 2024?
JuiceFS requires a backing object store like s3/minio that it “flushes” to persist data. If you want to run it distributed it uses a few other services.

I’d use object storage if I wanted simple in the replicated, jbod disk management and access control senses of simple. If I had to use file storage I’d use boring old sftp or smb on top of zfs on a NAS

tfolbrecht··on Night of the Runbooks: a DevOps horror story
The one place I've set up button triggered runbooks was gitlab ci under scheduled jobs. Made things a lot easier for less technical people.

tfolbrecht··on Steam to Chrome OS
If anyone else uses Steam Link, Steam link works well on the ChromeOS Linux Development Environment

https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.valvesoftware.SteamLink

As does the Android App in the ChromeOS Android Play Store.

Can't wait to have the full steam experience!

tfolbrecht··on Show HN: Rent private driveways with amenities overnight as a campervan/RV owner
Looks cool! I like the style.
tfolbrecht··on Deep dive into plastic monomers, additives, and processing aids
PLA is biodegradable. For the things I print, I usually smooth them with PVA as it's biodegradable. As far as pigments go, I have no clue what's in most commercial stuff I think they're the main caveat for truly biodegradable 3d printing.
tfolbrecht··on Zoomable lens without any moving parts
What you're describing is a light field camera.

It's cool tech, there was a company called Lytro that tried to commercialize them a while back.

tfolbrecht··on Software That Sucks Less
You’re probably thinking of dwm. Another great tiling window manager.
tfolbrecht··on LiquidPiston's “inside-out” rotary X-Engine wins Army research contract
Could be an interesting powerplant for ICE powered robots like Boston Dynamics BigDog.
tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: What can replace my iPod for podcast listening?
I use a Sony Walkman mp3 player.

I'm a big linux geek so I built a wallwart dock from a small arm computer, Linux, udev rules, fstab config making it networkable. This is the calmest[1] solution I could find. I think it's a concept you'd be greatly interested in if you're having trouble managing your digital life.

tfolbrecht··on TSA considers new system for flyers without ID
If anyone's curious, the current system is laughable. I flew after getting my wallet stolen in a smash and grab.

Questions: Name DOB Family members names Home address Nearby landmarks

All public info.

If there's nothing going on behind the scenes it's just more security theater.

tfolbrecht··on GitHub was down again
3 words: Service Level Agreement

I've caught a big cloud provider not reporting a degraded service, I assume they knew but politics and $ come in and it's easier to just gaslight everyone. I get it, but my frustration is worth loosing a trailing 9.

I think there should be some 3rd party continuously testing APIs. Degraded states are downtime!

tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
Working on a sort of universal dock for usb mass storage devices. It's a little linux box wallwart, udev rule, fstab, systemd unit config generator that runs scripts when the device is plugged in.

I've used this pattern for automating stuff with my Point and Shoot Camera and Kindle. Attempting to make it simple and accessible to non techies

tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: Team now works remotely, what to do with office phone for 2FA?
Twilio numbers don't receive Short Code messages (the weird six digit phone numbers) which most 2FA messages come from.
tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: Team now works remotely, what to do with office phone for 2FA?
I'd advise against a Twilio number, Support told me they can't handle Short Codes so its very unreliable for SMS 2FA.

I was using an Android device, KDE Connect app and a Linux box to view 2FA messages. Works, but it's a string of hacks.

Hope some better solutions come up in this post.

tfolbrecht··on $50M worth of Tesla equipment sits unused in a Wheatfield warehouse
If Panasonic’s leaving I’m assuming it wasn’t that sweet of a deal.

Even if someone else comes in will the state off the same terms? Can this hypothetical company fulfill their side? Is there somewhere greener?

tfolbrecht··on LibraryBox: Portable Private Digital Distribution
It’s an older model, very popular for pirate box etc.

You can find similar openwrt compatible hardware on openwrts hardware page. Just make sure it has usb and similar specs.

tfolbrecht··on How to Take Smart Notes
It's concise, simple, portable so I can use whatever text editor or notes app. I've gotten burnt out on switching.
tfolbrecht··on The Physics of Fried Rice
Lifehack for rice friers: Use leftover rice or make sure the rice is dryer than fresh out the pot.

I boil it, then throw it in the oven or microwave it, stir a few times so there's less moisture. If the rice grain is too moist the outside of it wants to stick to the pan instead of itself.

A lot to be said about automation (or anything sort of skilled work) and making sure your inputs are consistent.
