tfolbrecht··on Freshly Squeezed: The Truth About Orange Juice in Boxes
I'm fortunate to live by local Florida orange growers. Nothing like juice made from Valencia Oranges.

The economics of Oranges and juice are fascinating. In Florida, we had a major outbreak of citrus canker that made most of the oranges grown here unsuitable for sale by USDA standards (still safe for consumption). So, off to the juice factory to be stored in those massive vats.

tfolbrecht··on How Peter Jackson's team made World War I footage look new
I think using video as some source of truth is just as ethically shaky.

Synthesizing texture, adding faces, meh. It's all an array of pixels to aid hallucination. The sooner we break out of video = impartiality, video = truth, the better off society will be.

Choosing what to record, how to crop it, what to show destroys videos supposed fundamental impartiality.

tfolbrecht··on HTTP/3 explained
It's also been rendered in ePub, Mobi, and PDF https://legacy.gitbook.com/book/bagder/http3-explained/detai...
tfolbrecht··on Philippines tops world internet usage index with an average 10 hours a day
I have intermittent connectivity issues, and [mosh](https://mosh.org/) has been super helpful with typing lag, reconnecting.
tfolbrecht··on San Francisco has more drug addicts than students enrolled in public high school
I think the parent is implying students can be drug addicts, and the drug addict figure is a set that include high school students.
tfolbrecht··on AWS, MongoDB, and the Economic Realities of Open Source
It does, I've used it, I even have the socks, but it's a managed Database product. It's not equivalent to Firebase, AWS Lightsail, Digital Ocean One-click, etc. So a new MERN developer isn't going to gravitate toward that.

It's more like AWS RDS for MongoDB.

tfolbrecht··on AWS, MongoDB, and the Economic Realities of Open Source
MongoDB is choosing a dinosaurs business model, and it's going to hurt them and their ecology.

Mongo the org should play MongoDB like Google does Kubernetes, Golang, Chromium, etc. Have your people in there, funded, steering the project as 'FOSS' while you release actual products.

Mongo dropped the ball by having no on-ramp product like GCPs Firebase. Their Cloud provider hate is just a flailing reaction to bad business and existential fear.

Stop being a crybaby when someone makes a few forms and buttons that spins up a vm with your DB software running. Of course cloud providers would want a tight integration with their systems.

Managed Kubernetes on AWS makes k8 stronger, managed Firecracker on GCP and Azure makes Firecracker stronger.

tfolbrecht··on How We Designed the Librem 5 Dev Kit with Free Software
You could run Android in a container. I run an android container and Linux container, thought not at the same time on a computer with mobile specs: Intel Celeron N3060, RAM: 2 GB SSD: 8 GB and I can use Snapchat, Instagram, VS Code, etc

A well configured OS is magic, and with Lamby on the purism team, I'm sure it's going to knock socks off.

tfolbrecht··on Show HN: Coinboot – a framework for diskless computing
Ephemeral logs.
tfolbrecht··on The QNX Neutrino Microkernel (2007)
I appreciate you taking the time to explain this.
tfolbrecht··on The QNX Neutrino Microkernel (2007)
Why when there's FreeRTOS and a Realtime patchset for the Linux Kernel? Not sure what else the QNX ecology covers.
tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: RaspberryPi Games/etc for kids?
Scratch is the closest thing that comes to mind. Minecraft used to be bundled with the raspi distro.

In my opinion, anything more hands on is a bit complex for kids. Maybe show them how to do a few silly things on the bash shell? espeak is a fun text to speech cli application it should be in your distros repo, it's sort of like the Microsoft Sam voice app that came with early Windows. Text editors, games, all fun for kids exploring.

I'd eventually show them how to add software and update it. Then they'll discover fun things naturally. Maybe not necessarily programming.

tfolbrecht··on Show HN: Free and open-source home for art made with code
The feed is cool, I would appreciate if it was subdivided with tags like Mandelbrot, fractal, etc.

10/10 would add to my daily RSS feeds!

tfolbrecht··on Amazon uses dummy parcels to catch thieves
Could the police, after being baiting a thief have enough evidence to support an investigation into the individual, and get them for a felony?
tfolbrecht··on This is the United States’ third biggest housing boom in the modern era
I wouldn't draw any conclusions about the US housing market from SF Bay data lol.
tfolbrecht··on Dear Tumblr: Banning “Adult Content” Will Harm Sex-Positive Communities
I don't think it's that kind of child pornography. It's more the self produced, coming of age, scantily clad variety that is non-trivial to moderate.

The most offensive to modern sensibilities (and advertisers) isn't the naked people, but the gore, self harm, and extreme fetish communities.

tfolbrecht··on Raspberry Pi WLAN setup
Just wanted to specify. If you put the wpa_supplicant in /boot under the root partition, it won't work :^)
tfolbrecht··on Raspberry Pi WLAN setup
Not in /boot, but the boot partition of the device named "boot".
tfolbrecht··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
I don't disagree. I do try to consider that human, and member of society angle.

I personally prefer working with people I can have a high level discussion with and they deliver their portion with best practices, good communication, baked in. That's valuable. I believe it makes your work distinct from someone without those skills.

If it were all anonymous and I can make no distinction, you're equally valuable. There are cases where people from poorer places should and do get the higher wage.

tfolbrecht··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
If your work can't be differentiated from someone elses, why should you command a higher wage?

When the West had an industrial culture, we could compete with inexpensive labor because we had superior skill concentration, logistics, and capital investment. If you're willing to pay a premium, do so. It was Consumer indifference that let it happen.

tfolbrecht··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
How is any of that a bad thing?

If you can't utilize someone to their potential because of some political or social barrier, that's an absolute shame.

tfolbrecht··on What If Amazon.com Actually Is a Horrible Website?
Maybe AWS's web console was ugly. Their CLI app, APIs, SDKs definitely aren't.
tfolbrecht··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
I'd hope they're capable of that.

Lol, imagine as the farmers are in the fields, and merchants in the shops grinding away to make a few dollars a day. This remote dev is making a 10x multiple of their pay. Sweatshop? Ha.

tfolbrecht··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
Sure it's downward pressure on US wages without the benefits of having an employer, but for third worlders, $15 USD must be mana from heaven.

Calling it a "Software Sweatshop" is a little hyperbolic.

tfolbrecht··on Show HN: A platform for women to crowd-source advice in confidence
I get what you're saying, but nobody knows you're a dog on the Internet. The only implicate exclusions are those outside the scope of asking questions, women, and subtopics.

It's about setting a tone and building a culture.

tfolbrecht··on Wikileaks' Assange says Ecuador seeking to end his asylum
Everyone saying not to sue your asylum host, please consider, there's aren't too many way to interface with something as nebulous as a government and its law.

Talking to handlers only gets you so far. When your livelihood is at stake, and you want guarantees, you have to use the correct channel. They're not attacking the government. They're asking for clarification.

tfolbrecht··on Drone Hobbyists Angered by Congress Ending the Aerial Wild West
I didn't realize that was legal. Europe must be a super scary place.
tfolbrecht··on Drone Hobbyists Angered by Congress Ending the Aerial Wild West
I didn't realize that was legal. Europe must be a super scary.
tfolbrecht··on Building your own deep learning computer is 10x cheaper than AWS
Curious of the MTBF (mean time between failure) rate of a GefForce/Titan series GPU under continuous utilization in datacenter conditions vs a desktop computer with intermittent usage. I don't want to believe Nvidia is just out to stiff cloud providers. Maybe it's to protect themselves from warranty abuse?
tfolbrecht··on Robot Operating System – A flexible framework for writing robot software
The software is versioned with numbers, the codenames are for releases which could have version number ranges, or help differentiate stable from testing, etc. The developers and users can better make the distinctions with codenames.
