tfolbrecht··on How to Take Smart Notes
There so many posts with stuff like this, but what’s really had a positive impact for me is using my own custom notation. Nothing fancy, no org mode, wikis, markdown, just brackets and characters.
tfolbrecht··on Deploying front-end websites to S3 with CloudFront
Like a SPA? You use a something like react router and set the S3 error page to your index. I've deployed many SPAs to AWS S3/ Cloudfront. You have to handle the 404 page in app

Here's a SO post https://stackoverflow.com/questions/51218979/react-router-do...

tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: What is the single top-priority software engineering problem?
Theres a great tool by cdr that uses ssh to prepare and launch a VScode environment. Works great in conjunction with AWS ec2 tools like the awscli.

https://github.com/cdr/sshcode

tfolbrecht··on Building a Linux Desktop for Cloud Native Development
I do! It's my default way of working.

Thinclient: ~$200 Monthly Computing cost: ~$5

I'm broke so I bought a $200 chromebook, threw linux on it, that's my thinclient.

I issue credentials and spin up VMs from my thinclient with terraform or bash scripts using awscli/

When I have to, I use VSCode remotely with tools from https://github.com/cdr.

I also use the awscli to make Cloud9 instances for disposable dev environments, playing with a new language for example.

If you want to do native Linux over web and you have decent latency/bandwidth, you can spin up a vm and use Apache Guacamole, basically RDP/VNC through the browser over https.

Then I use my browser (Firefox ftw)

I also use twilio exclusively for phone/sms ($<10 per month)

tfolbrecht··on Windows 10 vs. Ubuntu Linux Performance on a $199 AMD Ryzen Laptop
Chromebooks are always cheap, but it can be a lot of work to get Linux on them.
tfolbrecht··on Ask HN: What's your cross-platform PDF / ePub reading workflow?
Send my ebooks to my kindle over whispernet. Takes notes, highlights and bookmarks with an external notepad.
tfolbrecht··on Uniqlo robots pick up packaged T-shirts and put them in a box
I used it today, visiting Spain from the US, and it absolutely blew my mind. All I did was drop my products in the basket, and pay with my phones NFC.
tfolbrecht··on Four common mistakes in audio development (2016)
Good point, I've been down that rabbit hole myself.
tfolbrecht··on Is the era of the $100 graphing calculator coming to an end?
My question is how has the second hand market not killed it already?
tfolbrecht··on Four common mistakes in audio development (2016)
Why is the realtime Linux patchset + Jack audio server insuffecient for what you do?
tfolbrecht··on Why GNU/Linux Viruses Are Fairly Uncommon
Leaving your door wide open isn't anyone's fault but your own. All the configurations and procedures for secure devices were there but manufactures couldn't bother.
tfolbrecht··on LightSail 2 Spacecraft Successfully Demonstrates Flight by Light
I'm curious if you could selectively turn off the reflective effect in different regions of the material and steer it that way.
tfolbrecht··on Show HN: LessPhone – A minimal Android launcher to reduce phone use
I use a very similar launcher called "Doorways Launcher."

This looks much more refined with extra features.

Thank you!

tfolbrecht··on Anatomy of a Mechanical Keyboard (2018)
Thank God our arms have joints in three places allowing us to position them arbitrarily.

Once you type one handed or use a mouse your ergonomic keyboard is less comfortable than the traditional geometry.

tfolbrecht··on Tell HN: I came up with an interesting way to do decentralized account recovery
I know an interesting way to do decentralized account recovery:

Shamir's Key Sharing + trusted parties (friends, family), and your fragmented private key.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_sharing

You need n of m of the fragments to reconstitute the key so if someone loses a fragment, you'll be okay. Cryptography is fun!

tfolbrecht··on A Secure Runtime for JavaScript and TypeScript Built with V8, Rust, and Tokio
I like the idea from a ux perspective. It puts the control in a place where the user runs the code.
tfolbrecht··on A Secure Runtime for JavaScript and TypeScript Built with V8, Rust, and Tokio
For the inevitably "what differentiates this from node?"

Single executable Allows imports from url File system & network Sandboxing is controlled with flags Dies on uncaught errors

tfolbrecht··on Removing Your Site from the Wayback Machine
I'm not a lawyer, but I'd argue you've published your content by making it available in your index. An archive or library doesn't publish content, but offers access to content having been published.

If you made a reasonable effort to control access to your works that might be a different story.

tfolbrecht··on Removing Your Site from the Wayback Machine
For every copy of your site made by archive.org, there are thousands from webcrawlers that don't respect robottxt.

A tasteful way to go about this would be to give context to past posts with a note at the same url.

To the people who want to be forgotten, you will be, but the internet is too valuable to the future for retroactive censorship.

tfolbrecht··on Someone in New York is pulling emergency brakes, destroying subway commute
Are you sure there aren't emergency brakes in the cab that would stop the train on the tracks?
tfolbrecht··on Launch HN: Prometheus (YC W19) – Remove CO2 from Air and Turn It into Gasoline
*portability Darn autocorrect
tfolbrecht··on Launch HN: Prometheus (YC W19) – Remove CO2 from Air and Turn It into Gasoline
Get to keep current infrastructure, engines, powerplants etc? Check!

Get the probability of gasoline with carbon neutrality? Check!

What an exciting technology!

tfolbrecht··on Housing Can’t Be Both Affordable and a Good Investment (2018)
It could be both if there were more diverse types of housing that fit the different stages of life.

Apartments and cohousing early in life, single family homes when you have children, and then downsizing.

tfolbrecht··on Study finds Reddit’s ban of its most toxic subreddits worked (2017)
It was never a question if top down rules on speech work, it's if it was a desired. Reddit is the beige wall of community. My experience is choosing between echo chambers, marketing, or ghost towns.

"Thousands of communities, endless conversation, authentic human connection." Would that mission statement be more true for Reddit, Tumblr, Image boards, IRC channels, random internet forums? and the conversation is boring, its feels just like tech Twitter where everyone has to make sure they thoroughly vet their posts for the sake of their future and avoid getting slam dunked on. At least it's usually up and down arrows and ban hammers instead of verbal assault.

Please convince your communities to abandon ship to self hosted, more intimate communication platforms.

tfolbrecht··on Millennials are piling into Tesla following the announcement of its $35k Model 3
It might be an ad for Tesla, but don't attack Robinhood.

They make money by selling order routing access.

tfolbrecht··on Amazon stops selling Dash buttons
Amazon still sells the developer Dash Button as AWS IoT button. Thats probably what your friends are using. They're going to be alright anyway, because if that gets discontinued you can build your own around the ESP8266. Its just a button that makes a curl request.
tfolbrecht··on U.S. Student Debt in ‘Serious Delinquency’ Tops $166B
It's an hour of reading/ a small code exercise, two hours of lecture, lunch, a small project and a brief meeting in a smaller group.

It's equivalent to a 40 hour work week.

tfolbrecht··on U.S. Student Debt in ‘Serious Delinquency’ Tops $166B
It's an 8 hour day with a lunch break. 11am-8pm ET, If you want people, you can always go to the local coffeeshop, library etc.

I agree colleges killer feature for a young person is networking, friendship, and dating. You just have to find alternative places to get it.

tfolbrecht··on U.S. Student Debt in ‘Serious Delinquency’ Tops $166B
Read there ISA, there is a cap, it's at 30k. You only pay if you make a salary greater than 50k a year. It's also six months full time, intensive, and targeted. They feel it's their duty to help you find a job, and have found a job (>50k) for 100% of their first cohort. Find me a college with similar numbers.

tfolbrecht··on The Raspberry Pi store is much cooler than an Apple Store
When they saw C.H.I.P. and other arm dev boards were coming to eat their lunch, they instituted these anti competitive practices. Think of that $10 off as a bribe so that RP Foundation can continue to dominate.
