teye··on What I Have Learned About Health and Fitness
Diet is 85% of where results come from…..for muscle and fat loss. Many don’t focus here enough.

I'm blown away by friends and acquaintances who put so much effort into exercise and are unwilling to change their diet. Cutting out sugar and flour, for example, will lead to greater weight loss than jogging an hour a day (for the average American male).

Average caloric intake from sweeteners alone: 152.4 lbs/yr / 365 days/yr * 453.6 g/lb * 4 calories/g = 757 calories

Average calories burned in an hour of jogging for an average-weight male: 728 calories

teye··on Arial Font is Bullshit
This isn't so much an alternative to Helvetica as an improvement upon it, but I mention it here because some of you may like to see it.

Haas Unica: the lost successor to Helvetica, no longer available because of licensing issues, but subtly refined by the same foundry after decades of experience with the original in an attempt to create the ultimate sans serif.

Univers + Helvetica = Unica

teye··on Arial Font is Bullshit
Helvetica's line-height is different (or is otherwise rendered differently, vertically-speaking), so I select Arial first to keep the look consistent.
teye··on Silk Icons: A Comprehensive Open Source Icon Set
Silk is a fantastic set. Been using it for years and haven't found anything more versatile.

Also recently came across the excellent (CC-licensed) Fugue set.

teye··on Gym price discrimination
That's what I thought too, but I saw the ordering system both times (before manipulation, immediately after boot-up) and the annual price was higher the first time and $199 the second time.
teye··on How I retired at age 25
I upvoted it (after reading) because I like periodic reminders that sexy web apps aren't the only way.
teye··on Ask HN: Review my lead-mining webapp, LeadNuke
Tell me exactly what your product does in the tagline. Make this sentence shorter and sweeter and put it center stage.

LeadNuke is a streamlined process that helps you find, track, and follow-through with news articles, blog posts, and RSS feeds from your industry, turning them into meaningful sales leads.

teye··on NYU Professor Scott Galloway: Ouch
This is not a lesson, though it could have served as one had it been written differently.

This is a petty response whose potential value is completely obscured by the author's self-importance and condescension.

teye··on Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love
If you can detect ad blockers, why are you whining? Direct them to an alternative flow/business model that works.
teye··on Nginx, the little Russian web server taking on the giants
Just switched from lighttpd a couple weeks ago. I've been convinced for a while now, but it's still nice to come here and see glowing reviews from Engine Yard and justin.tv.

Wrote a bit about my recreational CentOS install: http://todd.is/nginx-php-and-wordpress-migrating-from-lightt...

teye··on JavaScript zip code to state conversion
For a few apps, I've used census data to derive city and state from zip code.

It seemed like a disruptive flow to me too, until I asked for zip without showing any other address fields. On change, the address and prepopulated city and state fields slid down above it and address got focus.

I would say, "MySpace hiring paradox: we want reasonable people, but reasonable people wouldn't apply," but there are lots of people out there. Some like to help innovate, some like to help catch up -- and there's a lot of catching up to do.
teye··on Gym price discrimination
Recently experienced this with 24 Hour Fitness in SF.

Visited the location to sign up for the $199/yr my buddy paid. "That promotion [wasn't] currently running," but I got a call two days later saying that it was back on.

It's a shame to delay a customer like me who'll wait for the better price, but I bet you lose a lot of low-hanging fruit if you make the better price available permanently.

Without the system, eventually everyone gets the better price. And though slightly inconvenienced, I ended up joining for $199/yr.

teye··on "Don't you dare waste your fucking time"
Seconded. The description that sold me compared reading Borges to having the top of your skull removed and a cool breeze caressing your cerebral cortex. Quite apt, actually.
teye··on Google's Parisian Love Superbowl Ad
Tell us why you think Bing is as good as Google.
teye··on Firebug website just got a super gorgeous facelift
Far from gorgeous in FF 3.6 Win. A few quick ones:

1. Use (or make better use of) a grid layout.

2. Vary the type less. I count 3 fonts (excluding Firebug logo type) in too many sizes.

3. The 6 feature/functions (inspect, log, etc.) aren't doing much for me, and the bullets could be condensed. Firebug is awesome -- no need for fluff like Get the information you need to get it done with Firebug.

teye··on How I Landed A $50/hr Side Gig With Little Effort
Great comments on value and scarcity in social interactions. Being conscious of this has made me more successful too.

The notion of value offering is very different from value taking. Value offering coincides with abundance mentality; value taking coincides with scarcity mentality. When you are value offering, you really want to help the other person. You want to present them with the truth and honestly evaluate how you could meet their needs, rather than manipulating and micromanaging to get your end of the deal. You create a win-win situation.

Also, sounds like someone has had some experience with pickup.

teye··on Photographer Loves Math, Graphs Her Images
The delicate graphs over low-contrast, well-shot photos are so beautifully subtle. And the typographer in me loves the equally understated equation captions.

teye··on Stop Being an Idiot
Good call. Thanks for the feedback -- will keep that in mind next time I'm tempted to post a one-liner.
teye··on Stop Being an Idiot
Why would this be flagged/downvoted? Tufte says it better, says more about it, and gives awesome examples.
teye··on Stop Being an Idiot

teye··on Making dough or spam? The perplexing case of designing lead generation pages
Or photos with elbows likely include boobs.
teye··on No reply is better than no-reply
Increasing the tracking (letter-spacing in CSS) of body text i.e. choosing a design gimmick over legibility really aggravates me.

Inside Facebook does this too.

teye··on How unique -- and trackable -- is your web browser?
Your link includes a flag indicating the browser allows JS.

teye··on Ask HN: Review App : Build Apps Online, over Google App Engine
Some input on your homepage:

Every database application I create is already online. A more descriptive headline would help.

Listing each cloud's contents in a vertical list will make them easier to read/digest.

It's nice that it's made for App Engine, but that doesn't deserve more prominence than your walk-through link.

teye··on Barefoot Running
Nature is one of the top scientific journals out there -- awesome to see them covering barefoot.

I've been wearing Vibram Five Fingers and running on the fore- and mid-foot for about two years.

Running barefoot and landing on your heel jars your entire body (knees in particular) and isn't sustainable for long distances. Cavemen certainly didn't run this way, and we haven't evolved fast enough for our optimal mechanism to be any different.

There's plenty of evidence that humans have evolved to be better long-distance runners than any other animal. The amount of impact energy returned by our tendons is highest, and human ultrarunners can go over 50 miles in one sitting.

For a couple weeks, my calves screamed and my feet were sore as they strengthened. Then after a month I started to get used to running on the balls of my feet. After two months, I felt totally comfortable with the new style.

Also, my trouble with Illiotibial Band Syndrome disappeared within two weeks of starting to run barefoot.

teye··on Tips for a new Django developer
Great tips. When I was starting, some of these didn't occur to me and the others I knew I should be doing but didn't know how.
teye··on Jason Calacanis Punches Comscore In The Face. Comscore Punches Back.
I'd be interested to hear what Google/Quantcast/Compete have to say about people vs cookies and if/how they tell the difference.
teye··on Jason Calacanis Punches Comscore In The Face. Comscore Punches Back.
The last line was petty. No need to sully a well-written response like that... offering to answer any further questions instead would leave me much more impressed.
