tetris11··on Why Japanese has words for feelings we tend to ignore (mono no aware)
I wish there was a word for forgotten beauty.

I grew up at the foothills of mountains, but moved abroad into a flat city.

Every time I return, my heart aches as I gaze up at the vast towering landscape I grew accustomed to once upon a time, and yet each time I go back to the city, that longing in my heart is just sealed away again

tetris11··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
Initially bad songs made with real thought often mature into favourites as you learn what the artist was going for.

If you skip every song because you don't immediately like it, then you never learn to refine you palette.

There is then indeed a real fear when a song comes up catered to you, that says nothing about the artist, but was generated to keep you listening. You're getting pidgeonholed.

tetris11··on Every GPU That Mattered
I really want to see TDP over time.

If I can at least tell myself that our technological achievements come with efficiency gains instead of just apeing power throughput, I can rest a little better

tetris11··on Shell Tricks That Make Life Easier (and Save Your Sanity)
Never heard of instant truncate, nor `fc`, nor `Esc .`

Quite a few useful ones

tetris11··on Firefox Now Has Free VPN
This seems like a win for user-privacy and also that potential independent revenue stream (freemium 50GB vs premium) they've been chasing since Google search became their only goose.

They should have done this years ago, but I applaud them for doing it now.

I'm not clear on why the naysayers are against this.

tetris11··on Turkish Coffee? Since the 16th Century, It's in the Water
That's everybody's future, so I would have been pretty unimpressed if that's all she could come up with
tetris11··on Turkish Coffee? Since the 16th Century, It's in the Water
my friend's mother would make it for us, and I would secretly top it up with water and dilute the grounds until I ate/drank them down.

Not only did this illicit reactions of disgust, but it prevented them from doing a coffee reading of my future as my cup was always clean by the end.

tetris11··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
See Google and the Pixel4 battery debacle.

In theory if you bought your phone from one of their vendors you could get your cash back. In practice, the phone was old enough to have already been resold and there's no way you could claim that rebate

tetris11··on 'Miracle': Europe reconnects with lost spacecraft
> Proba-3, works just like a real solar eclipse. One spacecraft, which is roughly circular when viewed from the front, orbits closer to the sun, and its job is to block the bright parts of the sun, acting as the moon would in a real eclipse. It casts a shadow on a second probe that has a camera capable of photographing the resulting artificial eclipse.

> Having two separate spacecraft flying independently but in such a way that one casts a shadow on the other is a challenging task. But future missions depend on scientists figuring out how to make this precision choreography technology work, and so Proba-3 is a test.

Oh wow, they've potentially rescued this (very cool!) mission for both probes

tetris11··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
You buy a car, and it lasts maybe 10 years, and then you sell it on to someone else and they drive it for maybe another 10 years.

Updates should not be neccesary. An update can affect the resale value of my car by downclocking it "for safety"

It's definitely the first one. People at the upper echelons of the pyramid know how exactly unstable it is, but hope to grift off of the latecomers

It does though, it has user-space implementations of chroot, mount and kernel syscalls. You can even run a debian image built with a later kernel on an older linux system

tetris11··on Dulce et Decorum Est (1921)

At the starting of the week
    At summit talks you'll hear
    them speak
    It's only Monday

    You could be sitting,
    taking lunch
The news will hit you like
    a punch
    It's only Tuesday

    We'll all go running
    underground
    And we'll be listening for
    the sound
    It's only Wednesday

    You'll hear a whistling
    overhead
Are you alive or are you
    dead?
    It's only Thursday

    Though that shelter is your
    home
    The living space, you have
    outgrown
    It's only Friday

    Tomorrow never comes until
    it's too late

You are a small minority of parents who have the time, energy, and perhaps money to do so.

I'm not sure the vast majority of parents have any of those and would happily welcome a compromise where they hand their kid a tablet and it's a tame device

tetris11··on Turing Completeness of GNU find
So if i'm getting this, they initialise find in some kind of infinite looping state using its own parameters to create and nest directories, and define a halting state from whether it reaches the max number of nested directories where find quits.

I didnt understand the encoding part

But then you need to fight bots day and night and do some serious sandboxing on your server which you might be using for other things and is likely to have other accessible endpoints for people to exploit.

You also might not want your IP to be indexed by crawlers. Offloading the burden of hosting onto an already public site mitigates a lot of those issues.

If it wasn't Github it would be Gitlab, if not Gitlab, somewhere else I'm sure.

The point being you shouldn't need to soapbox from your doorstep, but use the commons as intended

tetris11··on Iowa farmers are leading the fight for repair
You still need a chip to calibrate mechanical part thresholds, and if certain parts are manual geared but autohandled, the chip needs to calibrate and memorise clutch positions.

A cursory look through someone's post history.

If a 6-day old account making highly voted posts and no comments? Bot, part of a botnet (check who upvoted, and purge as neccesary).

6 month old account, combination of high and low effort comments? Does not emit hatred with every fibre of their being? Appears to understand debate? Rational human, trust.

You do it on case-by-case basis and slowly increase your trust network

I don't really believe it though. How deep does that sensor penetrate? If I put a clean bowl in front of it and the rest are all dirty, does that affect the wash?

I'm sorry, but I'm going to keep pre-rinsing. It takes 5 seconds.
