Wow, nice.

I bought kneeling chair and sitting ball, but prefered ball, but I don't know whether it helps me at all

tester34··on It’s not funny anymore. Far-right extremists’ use of humour
I meant putting money into researching how does internet, internet communities, memes, social medias are used to manipulate, radicalize, create misinformation yada yada.
tester34··on It’s not funny anymore. Far-right extremists’ use of humour
>They are pretty much using your own arguments:

So what? blame the implementation detail and people behind it then

It just shows that the argument stands, becaues it's an actual problem and I'd rather do not have to argue with my parents about Bill Gates creating covid to inject 5G chips

and no, it's no joke and it's sad.

tester34··on It’s not funny anymore. Far-right extremists’ use of humour
If you believe that manipulation and misinformation on the internet is not an actual problem then I don't know what to say

It affected shitton of people about covid/vacciness related stuff

It's one of the biggest challenges nowadays

tester34··on It’s not funny anymore. Far-right extremists’ use of humour
how's that bullshit?

memes have strong power, especially if you can vote them to the front page

there has been shitton of them before 2016 election and during Pandemic they were used for both - good and bad.

From looking cost efficency perspective memes are insanely good.

edit Trump -> 2016

tester34··on Google and Facebook mandate vaccines for employees at U.S. offices
vaccines / covid are the new politics/religion from speaking from identity[0]?

tester34··on IPv4 pricing
I think organisations like DoD and schools should be force to give it to the pool if they aren't using significant part of those addresses.
tester34··on IPv4 pricing
do Departament of Defense of US and some schools still own a lot of IPs?
tester34··on I went to the office for the first time. I fucking hated it
As a counter-experience

I've been traveling 40km in 65mins each way using a train from the village "at the end of the world :)" that has a few thousands ppl, so definitely not capital city

tester34··on I went to the office for the first time. I fucking hated it
>It would add 90 minutes each way for my 15km commute.

Oo

I've been commuting 40km each way before pandemic with public transportation and it took me (65min of travel + waiting for train + 10min of walking) each way

tester34··on I went to the office for the first time. I fucking hated it
>This may just be my experience as a young person in San Francisco / Silicon Valley, but it's very common for office life and social life to be highly intertwined.

Damn, I've seen some random ass video on yt called "normal day of Googler" or something like that and it shocked me hard that "normal day" meant hanging out with coworkers

Don't get me wrong, it's not like we don't do it "here" - like going to pub or something, but it's definitely not normal day.

weird way to spell security

who needs performance, current hardware is too fast for non-server meanwhile cruds can be optimized anyway

tester34··on Ask HN: Why are username and password fields limited to certain characters?
If you're displaying username (like on NewsHacker) then maybe you don't want to allow people to use fancy weird characters that are untypable

>I mean like Real Engineering fields. What we do in software is not real engineering, not even close. That has pros and cons.

"Real Engineering" has definition and it fits SE, doesn't it?

Computer industry iterated and managed to reach the point where we can move really fast and do not break computers with bad code. That's result of thousands of hours of engineering effort of previous generations.

>Engineering is the use of scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items, including bridges, tunnels, roads, vehicles, and buildings. The discipline of engineering encompasses a broad range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied mathematics, applied science, and types of application. See glossary of engineering.

Ehh, I don't like current state of the Internet

In last months I've started wondering why do I even pay my internet bills

60% of the reason I still do it is that I need internet for my job

the rest is HN, two or three subreddits, music and some video games, wiki/google/maps and the fact that I still need to learn a lot in order to advance in career.

It's insanely hard to avoid that main stream media content (celebrities, dramas, dramas, dramas and $bad_stuff/propaganda) that affects the mood, even when I don't use "normal" social medias.

>- sanitizing input

Oh, that unicorn that everybody takes about, yet nobody does anything with it

So, how do you sanitize input?

you save in database escaped strings?

allow only "english" letters?

>- HTML injection

>- XSS

those two belong to

>- Escaping output

don't they?

>- Various timing attacks (eg password hashing)

>- How to store passwords

just use state of art auth/login handling libs?

>- DDoS and other resource exhaustion attacks

I don't think I'd add it there, isn't it handled by firewall / infrastructure than app directly?

Some forums add some kind of non-linearity by adding comments to posts

this way you have linear main topic and offtopic "sub topics" in comment chains under posts.

But I think that tree has some cons, namely - it creates/allows to have many sub discussions in one thread, meanwhile forum's linear model force everybody to follow the same discussion instead of groups.

It depenends when one model is better than the other - in thread called "Linux vs Windows" tree is better, because there's going to be a lot of sub discussions, but in technical thread I'd rather have linearity.

>Forums ain't it - of the ones I've been on, all considered replying to a week-old conversation as "necroposting"[4].

It's up to the community.

I've seen it done healthly e.g decade old posts are in fact "necroposting", but one year old not.

>What would the better version be?

in my opinion?

Forums with mature community and competent moderators.

Forums have way better model for discussions - better than fb, reddit, hn, twitter.

Discussions on forums can last weeks / months, meanwhile on reddit/hn when thread drops from front page and then 20 hours pass, then comment section under thread is dead.

But it doesn't scale

Welcome to my guild, comrade.
tester34··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
upvote/downvote system is flawed

allows to manipulate, promotes groupthink and kind of harassing people

it maybe worked over decade ago or so, but it's definitely not state of art nowadays.

edit. or maybe it just doesn't work for e.g news/discussions (especially about politics and other "hot" topics)

meanwhile for meme sites it should be fine

tester34··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
not really

it just allows manipulation by downvoting

tester34··on Why aren't there more programming-language startups?
Luna Lang / Enso

is visual programming language start up based in Cracow, Poland and they even had office in SF iirc.

They have shitton of fancy visualisations, it looks really interesting, but I'm personally not the target for Visual Programming
