tester34··on How to Write a Spelling Corrector (2007)
Have you tried using an ~~XML~~ PDF parser instead? /s

and tried to find which sentence without spaces matches your sentence

tester34··on What's Wrong with Tech Hiring
I don't agree with this.

>The person who used common user-space unix/linux tools didn't already have his mind locked into "writing a program to accomplish the interviewer's objectives"

It's partly your fail as a interviewer that candidate has to guess what you expect from him.

What if instead of using bash s/he had used popular GUI tool like Excel(let's assume that it performs the job quickly too), then would it be OK too?

tester34··on Ask HN: How do I get fit and healthy as a software engineer?
I found cycling to be very easy to do consistently meanwhile being very relaxing.
tester34··on What's Wrong with Tech Hiring
Different approaches work for different people

e.g

People with family/kids would rather not do home-work tasks

Some people would prefer to be asked about heavy job-related stuff e.g frameworks, kubernetes, real-life problems

Some people would rather challenge themselves against foundational knowledge e.g because for them it may be faster to do 1-2 algo tasks or it being technology agnostic

Some people would rather try designing systems, operate at higher abstractions levels instead of typing code

...

I personally believe that I'd rather see security questions than algo/ds questions cuz poorly performing algo can always be rewritten, meanwhile leak cannot be reverted, but I'm aware that shitton of people would hate that

How to match "interview kind" to candidate? maybe ask them which they prefer, I guess?

but it assumes that you have people capable of performing this kinds of interview and you want to "enable" this person to peak

While I do agree, then you don't have to run Selenium tests on your PC, but let it be done by e.g ci/cd

Also depends how many pages do you want to test with Selenium - if you want to test e.g 5 pages, then it'll be fast enough I guess.

There are a few tricks/configurations that make Selenium significantly faster - https://stackoverflow.com/a/57720610

A lot of is also on how do you write your "testing infrastructure" - maybe you could reuse engine/browser instance? execute tests parallelly?

There's also alternative to Selenium by Microsoft: https://github.com/microsoft/playwright

AFAIK it's way more reliable than Selenium (false errors)

__________

Overall you can still start application inside tests with different startup, without Selenium and send http requests, so you'll have end-to-end tests done fast.

Aren't they? Github works heavily independently from MS

tester34··on Mozilla has defeated Microsoft’s default browser protections in Windows
Holy shit I noticed that lately

and thought Windows stopped doing this

tester34··on Minimal APIs at a glance in .NET 6
For Selenium tests I've been setting up an actual instance of application in test with different Startup (e.g sqlite instead of real database) and running at different port

This way you can test those fancy things, but I agree it's kinda "hard" to get it working for the first time

tester34··on Minimal APIs at a glance in .NET 6
But why? generally you don't test controllers directly.

You test "service"/"handler" classes that handle those requests.

If you want to test controllers, then you write E2E tests that send HTTP requests

Here's some example of how it might look like

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/core/test/integratio...

tester34··on Minimal APIs at a glance in .NET 6
>At least when the controllers are all classes I can unit test them.

Do what on "controllers"???

heresy

> Maybe they've moved to Linux if they have finished their migration to .NET Core,

As far as I know they have been using .NET Core (or just EF Core? would be weird to go EF Core + .NET Framework, I guess?) on prod in 2018:

>This is the query pattern that caused StackOverflow.com to go offline yesterday:

https://github.com/dotnet/efcore/issues/13524

So maybe they used some things on Linux and some things on Windows - those that couldnt be ported to .NET Core back in the days

tester34··on “You don't need this overengineered goo for your project.”
Indeed, afaik they have been migrating long time ago

2018:

>This is the query pattern that caused StackOverflow.com to go offline yesterday:

https://github.com/dotnet/efcore/issues/13524

but on the other hand their tech stack site says: C# + ASP.NET MVC

instead of ASP.NET Core, but I don't think it is proof of anything.

>A junior dev can build an alternative

Of course junior dev can do it, the same way junior dev can make Youtube

it'll work as long as there's less than 100 concurrent users on SO and less than 50 4K 20min videos on youtube

tester34··on “You don't need this overengineered goo for your project.”

How? didn't they migrate to .NET Core?

uh, so what?

I struggle to understand acting as if those things were some incredibly important stuff just like water, internet, computers,

Maybe losing those will result in creating new, more open and less vendor locking alternatives

tester34··on Don’t Let Architecture Astronauts Scare You (2001)
How does it relate to Linux?
tester34··on Away from Exceptions: Errors as Values
Yes, I can always use First and catch Exception, which is meh.

First returning Result<T> or something like FirstOrNull would be better, because FoN would work for ref types - classes and stuff the same way (afaik) as FoD does, but it'd make error handling for value types like ints more precise

tester34··on Away from Exceptions: Errors as Values
Well, on the other hand there's difference between handling errors with values like:

-1, 0, 1 and other obscure things

and using proper types like

Result<T>

tester34··on Away from Exceptions: Errors as Values
Have you considered using patterns that help dealing with that?

like Railway Oriented Programming

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45yk2nuRjj8

I believe that almost every thing should return Result<T>, because almost everything can fail and compiler should scream when you do not handle those fail pathes.

That makes me believe that C#'s "FirstOrDefault" for value types sucks, because you're never sure whether the "Default" comes due to lack of value or because the found value is actually the same as default

e.g

var list = new List<int> {1,2,3};

var found = list.FirstOrDefault(x => x < 1);

found = 0 (default)

meanwhile 0 may be valid value! so we aren't sure whether it is error or an actual value

and we have to perform e.g casts to `int?` or stuff to detect that.

using Result<T> gives very precise information
