testb··on Google May Have to Get Used to Third Place in the Cloud
For dashboards, they're all equally terrible IMO and break numerous web patterns (middle click to open in new tab).

But every time I deploy a new AKS services, it takes 30 min for it to be ready. I luckily haven't had to do this recently (~4 months?) and I'm loathe to try again. GKE on the other hand is within 2 minutes.

testb··on San Diego Mayor proposes allowing some housing projects with no parking spaces
Except that Downtown is the only place in SD where being car-free is generally possible. SD has terrible public transportation especially now that Amtrak won't run later Coaster routes.
testb··on Masayoshi Son, SoftBank, and the $100B Blitz on Sand Hill Road
What makes you say Cruise is faking? The disengagement data would suggest they're the most viable self-driving car venture behind Waymo.
testb··on Ask HN: Google repeatedly thinks I'm a robot
Google doesn't even trust itself. My VPN is hosted on GCP and I get these regularly. Sometimes the header is missing and I have to guess which item I'm trying to select.
testb··on Why we needed Redux in the past, and don’t any more
There's a good chance you're not missing something - Lots of people don't like SPA's because the consistency of a normal website isn't there. The best SPA's I've used don't actually feel like SPA's and it's worth mentioning that no one seems to mind Amazon/Github/Youtube not using React/Vue/Angular
testb··on Why we needed Redux in the past, and don’t any more
The search term you want is 'react ssr' or 'react server side rendering'
testb··on A Conversation with Paul Graham [video]
True, best not to make generalizations.
testb··on A Conversation with Paul Graham [video]
Hm the advice to be a user would apply for startup founders right? I definitely wouldn't expect engineers to be active users especially in a more mature company with PMs.
testb··on Ask HN: Part Time Code Camps in Boston
This is a bit different, but you could also look into Harvard Extension
testb··on Ask HN: Review my webapp VEED.IO: Simple video online video editing
Sorry for the late reply - I'm using Chromium Version 67 dev build. Interesting, I'm p sure other webgl sites have worked fine for me. fwiw I'm on integrated graphics
testb··on Ask HN: Review my webapp VEED.IO: Simple video online video editing
* I tried to access the sample which seems to link to /edit but it just redirects me back to the homepage instantly

* Page takes an exorbitant amount of CPU and crashes the page after ~8 seconds

testb··on Web Architecture 101
Was about to write this exact reply. A single database and web server goes surprisingly far.
testb··on Luxury hotels are being inundated with requests from self-described influencers
That's some of the worst information redaction I've seen around. I might even think it's intentional
testb··on Node.js is now available on App Engine standard environment
I don't quite understand how GAE would affect using Firebase or not. Even on standard you would still use Firebase Auth, there is no GAE specific authentication.
testb··on Ask HN: Most effective path to become a solid systems practitioner?
imo the best way is to look at what other's have built. Here's some of my favorite talks that go from 0 users to millions.

Dropbox - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE4gwstWhmc

Instagram - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNA2C1vC8FQ

Slack (bonus. not as applicable but good reminder of why initial architecture does matter) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE9c9AZe-DY

testb··on Alternatives to Google Products
I don't think this pricing is active per https://www.fastmail.com/help/account/member.html

I signed up and I only see the same plans as on the pricing page

testb··on Ask HN: What web framework would you recommend for a greenfield project in 2018?
Hey, I picked a similar stack when I developed my product. Basically we started with EJS templates since they were the closest to normal HTML but had to move to serverside Vue + Express because of security issues when mixing Vue + EJS.

I'd love to talk more about what/why if you have any questions. Shoot me an email @ [redacted] if you're interested.

testb··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (June 2018)
SEEKING WORK - Remote, Boston? - [email redacted]

Fullstack web + mobile - Primarily JS, Vue, Kotlin, Java, SQL but can pick up anything as needed.

Tech Lead @ https://klema.io (JS, Vue, Kotlin, K8s, Azure, SQL Server)

Separate Android/iOS demo on request (Kotin, Swift)

I respond quickly to client emails and will pick up my phone. I also handle nonprofit work + rapid MVPs.

testb··on People using Venmo to spy on cheating spouses
That makes sense, there really wasn't a good system beforehand for paying others.

My primary concern with Venmo holding the cash is that I'd much rather have my bank in charge of it than some other random entity - The fact that it's now Paypal-owned doesn't help either

testb··on My First Year of Freelancing
Seems like a problem with trying to remote for hardware in the first place? But this is a great example of how (remote) freelancing/consulting doesn't work for everything.
testb··on History of Spring Framework and Spring Boot
Anything involving frontend. Dropwizard seems to fill the niche of API server very well but not beyond that imo
testb··on Tesla crash victim had complained about auto-pilot in same location
I think most of us would be more keen on not dying regardless of who is legally responsible
testb··on Reddit 1.0 source code
I'm guessing they meant something like jinja, ejs, jade, etc. where you have your html in a separate file and your lisp code would just render said html file with the necessary variables.

I think you implied that in your last point but I'd be curious to find a designer who knew lisp better than HTML.

testb··on Why Some Americans Are Risking It and Skipping Health Insurance
Interesting, anyone else have experience with health bill sharing programs? Hadn't heard of this before
testb··on Ask HN: Using Kotlin for web application back end
Our backend is currently 50% Kotlin with hopefully 100% when we do a full migration. I think you're already aware of the benefits such as data classes which remove the cruft of normal POJOs. What Kotlin doesn't gift you is a magically better architecture. There's still verbosity in querying a db, serializing JSON, mapping SQL results. Those things by themselves are of course not difficult but add in different layers and abstractions and suddenly the language itself doesn't help that much when your overall flow is just as complicated.

I'm not sure what is necessarily better right now - I am pretty happy with Kotlin (using Dropwizard) and the type safety that comes with it.

testb··on Ask HN: What Android App do you use to browse HN?
Thirded - Very responsive to (sane) feature requests
testb··on Hi,I'm a 19 year-old starting a new music streaming service, would love feedback
Hey I live near UCSD (recently graduated) and I've love to talk more about what you're doing. Feel free to ping me - details in profile.

Initial feedback: I'm kinda confused by mysongsnap vs galiboo? Like other commentators have mentioned my first thoughts are to find what differentiates you from pandora, spotify, or even youtube and what additional value you can offer beyond similar existing services. I think your landing page did a great job of communicating your initial proposition but I'd wish you explained more HOW you're 100x better than Spotify Radio and Discovery weekly.

I did poke around your demo at galiboo and some of the tags seem contradictory? Like simultaneously being 'Emotion-Pleasant / Comfortable Emotion-Arousing / AwakeningEmotion-Powerful / Strong' and I could definitely forsee this almost being an API service.

Overall I think if you can execute+deliver there's people who are definitely interested in better music discovery and I'd love to see it happen!

testb··on Native UIs using Vue.js and NativeScript
My experience would disagree. The layout system in Android is much more intuitive to me than CSS. It might depend on how customized you want your ui?
testb··on Show HN: A Tetris clone written in ES6 using React
Yep it's a human - there's a good number of people who can reach that speed but it takes years of practice. I believe a lot of the community started young on various platforms so some people have been playing 10+ years
