testHNac··on Gambling firm allegedly paid blogs to link new mothers to its online games
Let me rephrase this "Mom Blogs put links to Gambling Sites to get their readers, especially new Mothers, hooked to Gambling"

Sure, BIG Gambling Company is bad. But the so called 'mom blogs' have no ethics and decency for doing this.

If I were a reader, I might not trust the Gambling Company but I have a relationship ( as a reader ) with the Mom Blog owner. And it's that person who has abused our relationship.

The outrage should be directed more at these women ( I assume ) who are basically predators preying on new mothers who might be at an emotionally vulnerable stage of their lives.

testHNac··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
> Who’s going to create quality content if they can’t get paid for it?!

Many Youtube creators are Demonetized. They make money from other sources.

Also, not all creators making money are creating Quality Content. In fact a lot of content is recycled.

testHNac··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Reasons for not going Youtube Premium -

1) Don't want Youtube to connect me to my real identity. I browse incognito, or using alt IDs.

2) Many creators I follow are demonetized.

Why should I reward Youtube ?

If I want to pay, I would rather pay them directly. It's their content that I watch.

3) I have seen a Ton of financial scams for targeting poor people using the names of Credible Top Brands in the country . The fact that Youtube approves such shady Ads doesn't feel right to me.

What's the alternative ? Instagram Reels and TikTok already rule short form videos.

If they can introduce a better Search Experience and a Long Form Video product, there will be a credible competitor to Youtube.

testHNac··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
I have written another comment encouraging people to read the source material and draw their own conclusions.

One's questions about any topic in the end reveal their level of thinking. The fact that you only decided to ask about the Caste system indicates how broad minded your view of Hinduism and India is.

Regarding Political Correctness, I don't care.

It's the narrow minded people who pick and choose points from religious texts without trying to understand the true essence.

I have found something worth learning from every major World religion.

The politically correct today would say religion itself shouldn't exist and we should all be a a single blob of atheist homogeneous culture.

Don't share that view.

testHNac··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
Have you read the Bhagavad Gita ?
testHNac··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
We have seen ChatGPT confidently answers to satisfy the question you asked.

I am sure if you asked the tool about Christianity and Islam it would confidently answer the same.

Though the reality is both those religions came a few hundred / thousand years after the Bhagavad Gita.

When your question has an agenda the tool satisfies it.

It's catering to your worldview. If it's narrow minded. You get the answers to satisfy you.

You seem to have asked it about nothing except castes. Nothing about Karma, duty, purpose of life, right and wrong etc. That says something.

testHNac··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
Please read the entire post -

'Indian' - Endorsed by the Country or majority of the religion ? No. It's someone ChatGPT inspired clickbait tool to make quick money.

Hinduism doesn't have a singular 'God' that people follow like most monotheist religions.

The article's title is malicious, low effort and click bait. And from a certain school of thinking that Indians quite fairly consider Hindu Bashing. Don't go by what Guardian, Independent, Vice etc tell you about the religion.

-----

Try to read the actual text of Bhagavad Gita and draw your own conclusions.

-----

This is what some pretty wise and accomplished people had to say about the Bhagavad Gita - They wouldn't if Bhagavad Gita was entirely as the article alleged.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influence_of_Bhagavad_Gita#:~:....

Aldous Huxley, the English writer found Gita "the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind.", He also felt, Gita is "one of the most clear and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed; hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of humanity."

J. Robert Oppenheimer, American physicist and director of the Manhattan Project, learned Sanskrit in 1933 and read the Bhagavad Gita in the original form, citing it later as one of the most influential books to shape his philosophy of life.

Henry David Thoreau wrote "In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial."[18]

Hermann Hesse Hermann Hesse felt that "the marvel of the Bhagavad-Gita is its truly beautiful revelation of life's wisdom which enables philosophy to blossom into religion."

Gandhi The Bhagavad Gita's emphasis on selfless service was a prime source of inspiration for Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi told-"When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day".

----

Consider this an invitation to read the source - The Bhagavad Gita.

You might find it life changing, or it might at least inspire you to think beyond the simplistic Western concepts of Good and Evil.

testHNac··on Ask HN: Suing Facebook in small claims?
Few weeks back I posted a comment on Instagram. A warning popped up that it wasn't as per community standards.

I understood that it was wrongthink, so I immediately deleted my comment.

The warning system on Instagram comments is good for protecting you from committing Thoughtcrime.

testHNac··on Walkout at global science journal over ‘unethical’ fees
If I compare this to Reddit, there are subreddits for different topics with people of different mindset frequenting those subreddits.

That at least offers you a space to discuss something which might not be popular with most readers.

With HN you if your comment is completely against the thinking of a certain demographic ( identical people as you put it), it's downvoted heavily. No chance for constructive comments or discussion like on subreddits.

testHNac··on Google appears to be scaling up the ads it shows to Gmail users
Audience is going to Instagram Reels, TikTok. Many small business find showing Ads there convert better than on Youtube. Also, they are less distracting and more immersive for showing Ads compared to Youtube.

Other Social Networks have to bring a better Search Experience and Long Duration video. Then Youtube can easily have a challenger.

Also, showing too many pre-roll ads might reduce the ROI on Ads for the advertiser. I believe an Ad won't convert as good if it's part of a series of Ads.

testHNac··on Google appears to be scaling up the ads it shows to Gmail users
Their Main Ads product is progressively getting worse.

Search Ads are less effective than before.

Meta, TikTok etc are way better for many small businesses than Google Search.

They might think that adding more places to show Ads is the solution, I believe it will be better if they check how effective their Search Ads are for their customers.

They luckily have Youtube Ads, for now.

testHNac··on Google appears to be scaling up the ads it shows to Gmail users
Google Ads - Their bread and butter product is a mess.

I find Google Search Ads ( excluding partner network ) to be disappointing in recent years. Layers of complexity and reduced effectiveness.

With Google Ads I believe a decline is on the way for the company.

No one breached their moat, they are just screwing it on their own. Making it progressively worse.

> Why do so many commenters on HN always sound so confident, yet none of them work in publishing?

I find this with almost any topic I am familiar with.

The absolute confidence with which certain things were stated on HN was completely different from my lived experience.

This made me start placing less value on HN comments, and going and reading up more when I found a topic interesting.

I also find comments related to a certain worldviews generally get voted up more. Probably it's because of the HN demographic.

testHNac··on A new world order? BRICS nations offer alternative to West
You're right. Sanctions destroyed the credibility of the USD. Also, cutting Russia from Swift.

If that can happen to Russia, it can happen to any country.

Regarding your point about common interests aligning.

In last few weeks Saudi and Iran relationships are improving.

If that's possible, India and China can surely continue doing business together.

testHNac··on A new world order? BRICS nations offer alternative to West
BRICS is an economic alliance not a Military alliance.

NATO is backed by ideology to an extent. BRICS don't claim to have any such underlying principles.

China and India have a USD 135 Billion Annual Trade.

Practical Relationship - Not friends, Not allies, will do business together.

----

Sometimes it's good to know that the other person is not your friend.

Otherwise, like Europe one might find out that their friend and ally might not always have their best interests at heart.

testHNac··on A new world order? BRICS nations offer alternative to West
>Russia is a joke and an international pariah

I guess the definition of "international" here is NATO.

BRICS have a population of 3.24 Billion. B - Billion.

NATO has a population of about 950 Million. M - Million.

BRICS countries are actively Trading with Russia.

America's favorite ally in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia is doing deals with Russia and Iran. BTW Saudi Arabia wants to join BRICS.

Iran is friendly with Russia.

>India and China despise each other and are becoming more, not less hostile. China has pretty openly racist views about India and doesn't treat them like equals in any way shape or form.

You are not completely wrong about this. Still India and China Trade is USD 135 Billion. That's after many restrictions they impose on each other.

In the Indian and Chinese mindset, it's a very practical relationship. Don't consider each other friends, do business when necessary.

About your last point. Chinese don't consider anyone as their equals.

---

The world order is changing. BRICS countries are not dictating to anyone how they should live. They are just finding new opportunities among themselves.

testHNac··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
Reading some of the comments about coding and AI got me thinking.

Can modern AI come up with new Javscript libraries, Open source projects, Browser Specifications etc The new way of doing things that improve things.

When most people start using AI to make their work easier. Then very few people will develop the competency to create new things, innovate.

At some point will that cause progress to slow down ?

testHNac··on ChatGPT 4 saved my dog’s life
This is the right approach to using AI.

Went to a Vet. After the treatment didn't work, asked AI.

Considered AI's opinion.

Went to another Vet for Opinion.

Got Results.

Problem arises when People will blindly follow the diagnosis by GPT.

Got me thinking.

The first Vet might not have considered the issue due to a blind spot in judgement.

An interesting use of GPT for me will be to give it a scenario and try to come up with new ways of looking at the problem.

A way to detect blindspots in my judgement.

testHNac··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
People might be scared to let go of a house they already bought.

- They might consider going on paying in the hope that rates drop

- They might not be able to buy another house

- They might find rents will shoot up with mortgage, so somehow manage to pay mortgage.

Also, many houses are bought by investors and companies. They might be able to show higher mortgage as additional expense when filing Taxes. ( Not sure, but that's how I think they do it - someone can explain better )

If a large number of people are unable to afford their mortgage. Then we have a real crisis coming.

testHNac··on Show HN: Lunette – A word processor designed around writing, not formatting
"We figure if the writing process is fundamentally comprised of two separate parts--ideation and composition--then a word processor designed for writing needs a place for both."

There is also Inspiration before these two. Where I collect myriad info, snippets etc and then when things fall into place ( Ideating ) , I start writing ( Composition ).

I recently moved to Obsidian. I like the feel of it for writing, and it seems quite flexible to adapt it to my style.

They are Number 1 with Office.

That allows them to enter new markets. And push new tools under the Office subscription.

If there was a more dominant player in the Office Tools space, then they might be stuck playing catch up.

Similarly Google Pushed it's office tools under the Gmail for Domains ( Suite, Workspace etc ) Subscription. They used that domination to enter new markets.

testHNac··on Jaron Lanier on the danger of AI

testHNac··on Counter-Strike 2 – Limited Test for select CS:GO players
In CS GO you really get better with Practice.

I tried some Aim Practice Maps from the workshop. That helped improve my aim. Don't get that opportunity during the actual game.

I used to play for 30-40 mins a day, that wasn't sufficient time in game to improve. Especially against players who are playing for the better part of a day.

I guess these blood splatters will indicate damage. That can be a great gameplay mechanic if I can gauge how much health a person has remaining who I have just shot. And who probably ran away.

I can plan my strategy accordingly.

testHNac··on How TikTok Broke the Ad Business
I guess it's allowed when an American company does it. That's their privilege.

French Smoking Stats - https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/FRA/france/smoking-rat...

Since 2000 to 2022 smoking rate in France declined from 34.2 to 33.4 That's exactly my point with effectiveness of Ads.

---------------------------------------------------------------

People flock to these markets ( Crypto _ in a bull run. That's the whole definition of a bubble.

The target of these ads don't buy in downtime. They are looking to get rich quick.

Most crypto enthusiasts aren't flocking to buy crypto right now. Just HODLing. Most are underwater anyways.

Let me know how effective these crypto ads are during the next bull run when everyone is buying.
