tescreal··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I dunno, they've been competitive in the lies market lately. It's just a matter of ambition.
tescreal··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
Certainly, there are exceptions. Some people (think "islands") who are forbodden from using the internet freely. The technology continues to exist largely unencumbered, but select circumstances where the risk is considered "extraordinary" are given to exception. Guns in the USA, likewise, are seen as "not the problem" except where having a gun would be considered a dangerous thing for a specific reason (schools, courts, etc.).

Full disclosure: I'm not American and do prefer a little gun regulation generally.

tescreal··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
Drawing from reference is bog standard.

Tracing is a cardinal sin.

People lose careers over not understanding the massive difference.

tescreal··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
Why do people still bother with meta and others?

In my community (outside USA), we use local websites and posted bills. There's no magic to it.

>Network effects

If people decide the cost/effort is too high, that will dissipate.

>"Somebody else will"

This amounts to a thought-terminating cliche at this point. You are responsible for your own choices, not what others do. It's the worst cop out, you are claiming no agency.

*royal "you" where applicable.

I find a lot of responses to these stories fiendish. It is not "privileged" to refuse a bad deal. If anything, it is "privileged" to say one has no choice.

Sorry if this comes off as rantish... I find a lot of the conversation around big conglomerates tedious and usually just laden with overtly bad-faith arguments and lazy defeatism. Conversely, love or hate Woolf, surely there is enough respect for simple arts people should find these behaviors abhorrent.

tescreal··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
The "someone will" arguments never work for me.

I live in a community (outside USA) where it is common to advertise offline or alternative outlets.

There's no dependence "because others do". That is just defeatism. If people choose en masse to change their habits, the world has to follow suit, imho.

tescreal··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
On the naming issue with a "UTF-8" prefix, I suggest "UTF+8" which puns earlier in the string for a double effect. Fun paper!
tescreal··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
What is the consensus among experts?
tescreal··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
They're also quite particular on keeping weights private and preventing distillation (or really, any open weight models).

tescreal··on My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8
This, despite the ongoing social litigation of if this is even real?

I believe AI is quite capable in the right circumstances, but I'm not convinced "this" is the watershed moment.

tescreal··on Rivian's gambit for full autonomy
I see a lot of Self-driving cars hitting people vs. reckless drivers hitting people.

What I want is simple: accountability. If a human hits a human, we throw the book at them in the case of a modality of negligence. If a robot screws up, how do we remedy and discourage?

tescreal··on Defining AI Psychosis. Part 2: "Prolific AI Psychosis"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the popular use of the phrase relating to people who exhibited actual psychosis-like symptoms where the AI fed into a lowlevel but undeveloped delusion? Later people would appear to be experiencing a full blown episode which was fed and maintained by their interaction with AI?
tescreal··on Understanding the recent DDoS attack against Read the Docs
Good to know. I use your site (with a manual transmission user-agent) often, and it's fantastic. Thanks for your work and the writeup!
tescreal··on Understanding the recent DDoS attack against Read the Docs
I'm curious if anybody could speculate who would be attacking a documentation silo, and to what end?
tescreal··on Microsoft/TracerAI withdraws copyright takedown against Luanti

Glad they protect Luanti's copyright & fund development.

tescreal··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
Trusting vs. Intelligence (as generalities) are orthogonal.
tescreal··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
It's disappointing to see the way the developers are pushing this pre-alpha quality work. I don't know (nor care) about the personalities attached, but the pitch is neat. The way it is being handled with almost daily reports of RCE/Escalation is jaw dropping though. They need to spend some of those bux on auditing and less on whatever vibe-based engineering they're doing.

For haters: ignore them and recommend your favourite. For lovers: lobby the developers to raise their standards.

tescreal··on An investigation into the state of corvid–human relations
What does scolding look like in crows? Sincere question.
tescreal··on "IT WoRKs BeTter in the App "
I never know unless somebody thinks I was(n't) being sarcastic or glib or something. I try to be straight forward because fundamentally, I don't like the "obligation to be online" for how much I personally enjoy tech. C'est la vie!
tescreal··on State of the Map 2026

tescreal··on Migrating to HTTPX2
That's easily the strangest self-destruction I've ever seen. "Skewed gender representation"? Not sure how that matters or what the intended effect of salting the earth here was.
tescreal··on Autistici/Inventati's main .org domain goes dark after US terrorism designation
I would read that as an endorsement by omission. Maybe too conspiratorial? I'll accept criticism, but it definitely smells like implication (especially given the hard right-turn ICE took in their choices of "apparel").
tescreal··on "IT WoRKs BeTter in the App "
If the barrier to entry is "own a smartphone", there will inevitably be people who will be excluded. Lots of fantastic reasons to unplug in 2026, year of our plague. Even if you don't go so far, conservative allowances for data collection are one of the few digital freedoms left.
tescreal··on Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash
I want to believe that, but I do wonder. The surveillance powers are immense for such technology. Forget the magical "SAI" stuff. It would also be a perfect cause for hyperscaling: total coverage.
tescreal··on Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash
If they're in denial, perhaps they see something bigger at play? Governments are likely very interested in the massive-scale capacities for monitoring and analysis these tools enable. The public might not even matter to the suits in the end.
tescreal··on Mark Zuckerberg Wants to Make Sure His Competitors Share His Pain
Passing the buck further down the line only to enrich the well-to-do isn't exactly the meaning of "it takes a village to raise a child".
tescreal··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
Sure by today's metric. I wonder if the (A)GPL could be weakened? I'm asking because I want to know the boundary line that could emerge. IANAL of course, but informed speculation welcome.
