terraforming··on Oni: Modern Modal Editing – Powered by Neovim
I installed it and loaded my init.vim. It is just so slow. I'm a pretty heavy user of snippets, and it honestly takes like 1 second for my snippets to appear after I call them.

Nvim desparetely needs a good GUI. Ever GUI I've tried (I think I've tried all of them) lags when calling snippets.

terraforming··on Elon Musk Deletes Own, SpaceX and Tesla Facebook Pages After #deletefacebook
Can you check when he created the account? He hasn't made any "toot" yet, so he might've just created the account so no one would pretend to be him?
terraforming··on Elon Musk Deletes Own, SpaceX and Tesla Facebook Pages After #deletefacebook
I never had the impression that Musk cared much about privacy but I seem to be wrong. Or perhaps it has more to do with the current POTUS and his impact in the environment. Either way, I am happy for his decision.
terraforming··on Ask HN: What tools have most helped your day-to-day productivity?
Matterlist seems interesting. My problem with these kind of services always comes to two things:

- Pricing; - Privacy;

I find it incredibly expensive to spend 5usd (and 10 on some) for essentially a to-do-list software. And you might tell me that it's the price of a coffee, but it really is not. A coffee, where I am from, is much cheaper, but more importantly, everything is subscription based nowadays. How come it is so expensive?

- Privacy: Is that E2EE? I suppose not. Does anyone know of such a project that has E2EE and is not from the US? (edit: apparently, matterlist is from estonia. Good)

Also, you state "Try our native apps now! It's free!". I would, but apparently it's "coming soon". There are no accounts and there is nothing to download yet. Is it even possible to use it right now?

terraforming··on Cleaning sprays have an impact on lung health comparable to cigarettes
Can you share the source for "that has top (A class in EU) filtration" please? I might be buying a new vacuum soon and would like to research it well before doing so.

What? How so?

terraforming··on The FastMail Security Mindset
Please tag me when they answer. (does HN have tags/notifications?)
terraforming··on The FastMail Security Mindset
That's wrong. You no longer need a third password in protonmail. All you need to have, in order to login, is the username and a password. If you've 2FA enabled, you need the 2FA code of-course.
terraforming··on The FastMail Security Mindset
Do not forget about tutanota.com. I prefer them to protonmail since they're much cheaper and feature wise are pretty much the same.
terraforming··on The FastMail Security Mindset
That is a very weird thing to do, and easily fixed. Just do an average of log-ins per day/week, and do not accept any reset passwords (from customer support) before that avg time has elapsed (+ an uncertainty) since the last time you checked the email.

How come they accepted the reset? Were you not logging in your account?

terraforming··on Joplin – A note-taking and to-do app with builds for desktop, mobile, terminal
You can pretty much hide everything on QOwnNotes. I've mine to pretty much mirror every other note-taking app (just 3 columns)
terraforming··on Joplin – A note-taking and to-do app with builds for desktop, mobile, terminal
May I suggest QOwnNotes as an alternative to this? It's also cross-platform (not sure about mobile) and it's not another shitty electron app.
terraforming··on Standalone Signal Desktop
Matrix is fantastic. However, riot desktop sucks in my opinion. Yet again, an electron app. You say that matrix "has excellent clients for all platforms". That is simply not true at this time. For linux, there's pretty much only 1 client that's currently usable, and that is riot (electron app).

There's a fantastic one in the works, qmatrixclient (quaternion: https://github.com/QMatrixClient/Quaternion), but it doesn't support E2EE yet.

terraforming··on Text Editor Performance Comparison
I also think that ST3 is faster/more-responsive than vim with plugins.

For example, in order to make vim an alternativet to ST, I have to use several plugins, such as snippets, youcompleteme, etc.. Once I do that, vim has a slight delay that I just can't stand.

terraforming··on Ways scientists use Slack
I agree. I seriously hope Matrix becomes the open standard for everyone to use.. I dream of the day my contacts will stop using skype.
terraforming··on Improved Authentication for Email Encryption and Security
Does Pantheon-Mail support PGP?
terraforming··on Disappearing messages for Signal
Why do you not recommend? Hopefully you're not just saying that because they aren't Signal..

I've been using Wire for a few weeks now and I'm absolutely happy. They recently released a linux client https://medium.com/wire-news/get-your-linux-on-999403a1a4fe#... (not a chrome app!) (though I think it's electron).

I'm quite happy with them, give them a try.

terraforming··on The Dropbox hack is real
I use spamgourmet.com for the unique-email-per-service..

Sadly, it doesn't support 2FA.

terraforming··on Mailbox.org – Privacy made in Germany
After the fastmail fiasco (they increased prices, and now old packages no longer have access to the newest features), I started looking for an alternative and came across mailbox.org... I've been trialing for a few days and they do seem interesting.

I just wish we could use an unlimited number of aliases in our own domain, it doesn't make sense to me otherwise..

They do have some interesting features, such as mailbox encryption as well as calendar/contacts encryption. It's client-side encryption, though it's in the browser.

An alternative to mailbox.org is mailfence.com.
