I value your time and mine. So, I intend my comments and posts to be helpful. If they're not, lemme know. We're all in the soup together.

ternaryoperator··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
There are many exceptions to what you state as an ironclad rule: i bought a display case for my baseball, i bought an album for my photos, etc. “for” can go in either direction.
ternaryoperator··on //go:fix inline and the source-level inliner
It does not exist in Java. Comments in Java do not change code.
ternaryoperator··on Kotlin creator's new language: talk to LLMs in specs, not English
Agreed. There is definitely a similarity to BDD.
ternaryoperator··on OpenAI is walking away from expanding its Stargate data center with Oracle
J6 is not a strong counterexample, IMHO. Part of the problem with Epstein is "proof beyond a reasonable doubt," for which evidence is needed--and, it appears, hard to come by. Whereas with J6, there were thousands of hours of footage showing the crimes being committed (and in many cases bragged about), which made prosecutions much easier.
ternaryoperator··on Galileo's handwritten notes found in ancient astronomy text
He studied them diligently. His book Digital Typography gives lengthy accounts of his research and includes photographs and examples of how he chose various aspects.
ternaryoperator··on I write games in C (yes, C) (2016)
But if you go to the search box at the bottom of the HN page and type in 'go' the first hit is "Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free," In the top 10 results, only _two_ are about Go, the language.

Whereas the first 50 golang hits are all about the language.

You might have your preferred approach, but there are good reasons for using golang.

ternaryoperator··on I write games in C (yes, C) (2016)
The use of "golang" for posts and comments is desirable IMHO because it greatly facilitates search, especially on sites such as HN that cover many languages.
ternaryoperator··on G Lang – A lightweight interpreter written in D (2.4MB)
Yowza! Lines 1566-1637 consist entirely of closing braces. That's 70 closing braces in a row. Beyond the nightmare of maintenance, it's got to be a performance drag on the compilation.
ternaryoperator··on Swift is a more convenient Rust (2023)
That's progress over where it was a year ago. But the almost complete absence of packages that run on Windows makes the progress made so far more of a curiosity than a usable option--alas. I'd use Swift in a heartbeat if it had even a semblance of a decent ecosystem on Windows.

How is Zig an EU language?
ternaryoperator··on Text Is King
Well, given the detailed statistics re reading in the US, I think she is speaking for more than herself, no?
ternaryoperator··on Swedish Alecta has sold off an estimated $8B of US Treasury Bonds
It has importance beyond that someone else bought the bonds. It also suggests they will not be buyers in the future. If they represent the beginning of a trend and Europe stops buying US bonds, that will be a serious blow to the US economy.
ternaryoperator··on Common misunderstandings about large software companies
I agree fully with your comment, but I wish to point out that Larry Ellison's was a programmer at the time that the company that became Oracle was founded by him and his co-founders.
ternaryoperator··on An Honest Review of Go (2025)
> The stdlib is one of the most complete

Coming from Java, I find the standard lib very small. A case in point is the collections library: arrays/slices, map, list, ring, and heap -- that's about as minimal as you can get.

ternaryoperator··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
If you think this is primarily about drugs and authoritarianism, don't overlook this one important dimension: the country with the largest proven oil reserves in the world is...Venezuela.

ternaryoperator··on Why xor eax, eax?
The origin AFAIK stems from the mainframe days. When using BAL (the assembly language for the IBM/360 family and its descendants), xoring was faster than moving 0 to the variable. Many of the early devs who wrote assembly for PCs came from mainframe backgrounds and so the idiom was carried over.
ternaryoperator··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
The comment is clearly sarcasm.
ternaryoperator··on Java Decompiler
It had better be really old Java code. This decompiler supports only through Java 8. We're on Java 24 now.
ternaryoperator··on Fran Sans – font inspired by San Francisco light rail displays
in fact, use of the article before the highway number is a giveaway that the person is from elsewhere.
ternaryoperator··on Larry Summers resigns from OpenAI board
> It's also telling that the NYT is the only major outlet to consistently be reticent to state unequivocally that Epstein killed himself. Always said "found to have committed suicide."

Nonsense. "...Mr. Epstein, who died by suicide... [0] "...disgraced financier who died by suicide...[1] etc.

ternaryoperator··on NJVL: Nim's New Intermediate Representation
That's an important point you make. A closer-to-SSA IR would have helped in the provided example by forcing the function calls to be completed before their return value being passed to the principal function. I'm surprised Araq dismissed this concern.

ternaryoperator··on With deadline looming 4 of 9 universities reject Trumps pact to remake higher ed
You are literally arguing against history, not me. The history I described is playing out even today as more universities abandon preferential admissions for children of alumni.
ternaryoperator··on With deadline looming 4 of 9 universities reject Trumps pact to remake higher ed
It reads as reasonable but is really saying: no diversity hires. That’s more significant in universities than in the job market. In general, the most educated Americans are the children of the wealthy. So without DEI, the faculty, which is thereby a product of the economic elite, will be teaching primarily the children of that elite. Universities recognized the problem with this closed system long ago and used DEI as a way to address it. That’s what the Trump administration is targeting in part with these compacts.
ternaryoperator··on With deadline looming 4 of 9 universities reject Trumps pact to remake higher ed
Univ of Virginia announced yesterday they would no sign. So now it’s five universities.
