terminal_d··on Sabine Hossenfelder: There are areas where physics blurs into religion
> but it’s a massive red flag when someone starts to define themselves and their views substantially in terms of that opposition.

Anyone from the other side could make the same argument (and they often do).

If you're trying to name a "us versus them" then there's just one big mainstream entity, the rest is fragmented. So it's not really a "red flag" because opposition is by definition not a coherent group.

I wouldn't call her a charlatan, but I would call many people on the "other side" that. Wading through BS is practically a full-time job and she's very good at it.

If "low morale" is really the bottleneck then we aren't getting any science done anyway.

And as an aside, I don't believe in group / peer based "science". There's a few geniuses (often not credited) that define the entire thing while everyone else seems to practically be in marketing by comparison.

Science can be a group institution, but educational institutes are far from it.

Criticism and disbelief are the bedrock of Science, and calling people that don't flock to still-unproven claims "science deniers" is very dystopian. There's also entire groups of phenomena that "hard" / popular science conveniently ignores. They all fall under Science by definition, but not under science-the-religion.

What sort of long-running commands are you using?

There's an `async` call for system functions in elisp.

"Who watches the watchmen?"

We need more Sabine Hossenfelders. Too bad natural hierarchies seek to excommunicate such people.

terminal_d··on Ask HN: Would you like to join a mob programming group?
> Typist and the Rest of the Mob

>We adopted the terminology from Code with the Wisdom of the Crowd by Mark Pearl:

>One person controls the keyboard, this is the typist. The rest of the mob discusses the problem, agrees on the solution, and instructs the typist. The typist follows their instructions, puts them into code, and may ask clarifying questions to understand the solution. The rest of the mob guides the typist as needed.

>We value the typist as they allow the rest of the mob to focus on solving the problem.

>The typist must not code on their own. This balances the participation of all team members and it reduces the dominance of strong characters.

That sounds horrible!

Have you seriously tried using emacs yet? I always find this sort of text editor comparisons pointless.

And anyway, emacs is hardly a "text editor". It's a text manipulation engine, likely the only one.

The way it's framed, it seems as if it's not possible to be a "good worker" if you take the recommended breaks.

Might not be factually true but that's what the article seems to imply.

terminal_d··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
You monster.

Why did reddit use such a shitty design, anyway? To maximize clicks / number of pages visited?

old.reddit.com is the only sensible reddit interface, the mobile app sucks. Even the old m.reddit.com was pretty great..

terminal_d··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
Are you in Chaos Monkeys?
terminal_d··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
If that happened today you'd be famous online.

Anyway, I think automation and its consequences are much more complex these days and beyond the understanding of any non-technical / "not in the know" person. People used to know that "robots would take our jobs" but now that's not always true. The people writing completely "harmless" software are likely responsible for many, many bad things that would be difficult to even assign the blame for.

terminal_d··on Reconstructing images a person sees via non-invasive brain scans
I think it will be similar to how diffusion-based image generation currently relies on what the model is trained on.

This might work well for average folks, but for anyone sufficiently out of the norm / with expertise/mental hardware outside of the bounds of the trained model, the results will be subpar / useless.

terminal_d··on Why is the terminal input so weird?
A lot of macOS users are suckers for any sort of themed-up applications that can be replicated in their normal setups without any extra software, had they just bothered to RTFM.
terminal_d··on Why is the terminal input so weird?
This is also available in bash. In emacs input mode (aka the default) one can press C-x C-e to edit the current command in an editor.

`v` is also available in vi input mode.

terminal_d··on Notion AI – waiting list signup
I'm very wary of all these companies building their offerings on GPT-3. It's dependent on OpenAI until it's cheap enough to host your own instance, and then they wouldn't have a proper service to offer anyway.

Also, GPT-3 completion is pretty hacky, and anyone who needs it on an information organization pipeline is not taking it seriously anyway.

Slavery is far from dead, the modern world is built on the back of slaves (not slaves from a few generations ago, slaves that exist now). It's just very ubiquitous, like the Roman using Lead in everything.
