teniutza··on Research: ‘Ukraine war costs Russian military €20B per day’
That's a very chilling thought.
teniutza··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
I don't think this is going to be enough. We see everyday people affected by the pandemic yet many of them still refuse to get vaccinated, keep distance or even wear a mask... They will just dismiss these consequences as "one offs"...

I believe that our best chance is to do as much as we cand right now and to induce a sense of climate awareness into the younger generations. Bring them up believing, well, actually knowing, that the climate must be respected and protected constantly.

teniutza··on I don't want to do front-end anymore
I'm asking you this as I believe it will help me in the future. Is having the knowledge about the tool better that having the skills to solve a set of problems? If I really want a position within a specific company (for whatever reason) but they use a language with which I haven't worked before but am willing to learn (and definitely have the learning skills for that!), would I be in a disadvantage with respect to another candidate, one that has extensive knowledge about the language (and ecosystem), even if I would have experience in the "field of the app being built"?
teniutza··on Show HN: I'm 15 and made a bedtime calculator with React JavaScript
That's the beauty of the good old scroll bar: if it's there, you know you can scroll! This does not happen on smartphones and tablets due to the limited space.
teniutza··on Show HN: I'm 15 and made a bedtime calculator with React JavaScript
This is really cool and nicely made! Congratulations! I'm assuming you don't have years of programming experience (feel free to correct me!) which makes it even more impressive when looking at the things you got right. This include the idea/functionality, layout, source and that cool Moon animation!

I would suggest improving a couple of things:

1) defaults:

  a) some people don't like pickers (especially this "modern" hour then time thingy) and would like to just click the "Calculate" button. I think that the value that you have already set in the picker is good enough for most.

  b) eliminates issues where the value is not visible in the GUI but it is set in the program. Right now, if you open the picker and click on "Cancel" (or outside the picker) without selecting a time, the input does not show a value but you can click on the "Calculate" button and it calculates using the default value.
2) tables of data: if there's not much data in a table, like in the one the recommended sleep time, do consider copying the data instead of rendering the image. It makes the data searchable (accessibility is important) and, usually, saves an additional request for that resource.

Definitely continue! You're on the right path.

teniutza··on Apple's App Store Polices Mean Xbox Game Streaming Not Allowed
The article mentions that the difference between movies/songs and games is that the later is interactive while the former aren't.

Movies and songs don't offer (yet?) "in-movie"/"in-song" transactions, therefore they aren't a potential source of revenue.

Already there... At least in Germany.

teniutza··on Ask HN: How do I escape webdev?
If it's going to be .net, give Blazor a try: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/apps/aspnet/web-apps/blazor.

Still, this does not completely skip de design/style part.

teniutza··on City Roads – Draw all roads in a city at once
I was thinking about it. I saw, after I commented that you added an SVG export, but did not have time play with it. I'll definitely have a look. Thank you!
teniutza··on City Roads – Draw all roads in a city at once
Really great idea and nicely made! Congratulations! I'm considering making a poster out of it, with our home town. I think my wife would love to have it. Seeing it on the wall would probably make us less home-sick.

How complicated would it be to add the option of highlighting one or two streets? Something like, make the street line thicker or change its color.

teniutza··on State of JavaScript 2019
Exactly my reaction. I do think that you can create stunning animations and for that you need some expertise but animations are the "the basis" for a complete and successful front-end.
teniutza··on Power Your Dreams with Xbox Series X
Yeah, I must have skipped that line. Would it come in two variants or it's just that it's possible to turn it on its side? the XBOX logo at least would look kind of "wrong"...
teniutza··on Power Your Dreams with Xbox Series X
It does and it doesn't. My current Xbox fits on a shelf under the TV. The cupboard is 60cm tall, having 2 shelves for all the TV-related electronics: BluRay Player, TV Box, and Xbox. With the new design, it can't fit in there... I couldn't find the exact measurements; I don't know it's height or if it would fit if I take out one shelf.

I get it that it wants to stand out and it does but at first glance, I don't think it's that practical.

teniutza··on Apple’s iPhone Software Shakeup After Buggy iOS 13 Debut
Believe it or not, some people can both push a (virtual) button and look behind the camera at the same time. We preserve stuff for posterity. My own experience tells me that my daughter has a lot more fun looking at pictures and videos from when she was a toddler and hearing the stories behind them, than when I just tell random stories without any "immediate context" (location, other people, toys).

I don't know if finding both JSON files but having to download leftPad would be any better...
teniutza··on New Features in Vue 3
I agree with you on the preference part. I share the same preference as the GP. I've played a bit with Vue in the past, at the same time I was testing React. I've enjoyed Vue but the strings and template were a grim reminder of the Angular not-so-fun-times and passing members around per-reference and not "per string" made more sense in the general JavaScript way of programming, and so I ended up sticking with React.

Even with tooling support, those strings still make me wanting to look away...

teniutza··on Apple Watch Series 5
Quite a lot happening in the morning, before you go out. Those are many steps which are not reported on the daily summary.
teniutza··on Lego to open 160 new stores as other toy retailers suffer
I can only say that my 6 yo daughter has more LEGO (Frozen and/or Friends) sets than I have (Technic or Creator).
teniutza··on Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?
I always found the iOS notifications to be a bit odd. I never owned an iPhone but my wife is now at her 4th. She always forgets she received a notification because she has a lot on her mind (she's a doctor and we have two kids) and all the notifications get "half dismissed" whenever she opens her phone (text, call, browse, whatever...). Somehow, it's assumed that when you open your phone you automatically have time or want to read all the notifications. They will not be shown again until you explicitly go into the submenu (pull from the top, I believe). I think that's not realistic. I like that on my Android phone the notifications stay there until I specifically clear them or interact with then (tap to go to app). They won't automatically disappear just because I want to see the cat meme my friend sent me...
teniutza··on Show HN: A11y-CSS-reset – A small set of global rules for accessiblity
Could you please tell me what the reason for the additional body { height: 100%; } in the resets is? At first glance, it doesn't seem necessary.
teniutza··on Driving on the Autobahn
One time I was casually driving near Frankfurt with 150kmh (there's enough room on the A5) while a Lamborghini slowly caught up with me on the left lane. After a couple of seconds, the driver thought it was too boring and decided to accelerate. In the blink of an eye, he was so far away, you could barely even see it. The pebble it threw into my newly changed windscreen is a story for another thread...

teniutza··on My Salary Progression in Tech
Look, you're right about happiness, but let me make 200k/year for about 5 years and then I'll publicly share your view. Also, that's Berlin; the situation in NRW (excluding D & K) is a bit different. Currently earning 1/4 from what you earn, with 6 years experience in the same company.
teniutza··on A guide to useEffect in React
I was simply pointing out that explicitly defining an interface is not necessarily a downside.
teniutza··on A guide to useEffect in React
Sometimes I need to create the props at a different level/location and not directly on the component. The interface for the (class component) props is then very useful.

teniutza··on Sitzfleisch: The German concept to get more work done
I'm not German but I work in Germany. I work in an two floor office with >50 people; we're 4 people in our room, working more or less on the same projects, as a team, and we all have small children. When one of us is sick, they stay at home until they're not contagious any more. You're not only thinking about the people you're working with, but also on the impact of their health on their family members. This is both because of "common sense" and of a "practical sense": you don't want to infect other people and see them get sick (common sense) and you don't want to have your team mates missing, which sometimes makes your job harder.

I believe this is also related to the culture and the way the employee is protected by the law when sick. In Germany, you're not going to get fired because you were sick for, say, a week. Although I don't know all the details and subtleties of the American Health/Work System, I can say I haven't heard that many great things about it. Which, in my eyes, would confirm/explain why in the GP's example, their American colleagues work even when sick.
