tenaciousDaniel··on AWS Lambda Cold Start Times
No idea why. Yeah we're trying all the usual techniques.
tenaciousDaniel··on AWS Lambda Cold Start Times
I'm extremely surprised to hear that. I know that there can be implementation differences, but on the level of application-code, this stuff is super simple. Create a javascript function then upload it. Not really much else to it, so I can't fathom what the difference is between your project and my own.

We're not doing anything crazy, it's just a basic CRUD application with minimal data (entire DB is less than 100MB at this point). And yet we're seeing constant, constant lags of several seconds for almost every single request. I can't explain it.

tenaciousDaniel··on AWS Lambda Cold Start Times
I've confirmed that the actual execution of the function itself takes ~30ms, and that the time to download is standard (~200ms). That only leaves the cold start; nothing else makes sense.

edit: I even set up a node server on AppEngine itself, copied over the exact code to an endpoint, and it was taking 300-500ms tops (after the initial cold start of the AppEngine server).

tenaciousDaniel··on AWS Lambda Cold Start Times
Yeah I tried that, it doesn't work. Ultimately the provisioning algorithm is a black box.
tenaciousDaniel··on AWS Lambda Cold Start Times
Yeah I could see serverless being useful for those scenarios.

That's what I thought. We've spent weeks investigating this one function and tried everything that Firebase recommends in their docs. Nothing has worked.
tenaciousDaniel··on Singularity – Microsoft’s Experimental OS
Ha, usually it's a game of "is this vscode, postman, chrome, or all of the above?"
tenaciousDaniel··on Singularity – Microsoft’s Experimental OS
fwiw, VSCode is very impressive. I often forget I'm using an electron app.
tenaciousDaniel··on Google’s apps to embrace iOS on iOS
That always confused me, because I thought Apple had a policy where you couldn't visually replicate their native iOS components, else they would reject you from the App Store. However I haven't worked in iOS-land since around 2015; has that policy changed?
tenaciousDaniel··on GPU.js
I think this uses Canvas/WebGL to provoke the GPU into performing calculations behind the scenes. If that's true, I imagine this solution will fall by the wayside as WebGPU becomes production ready.
tenaciousDaniel··on Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return
Fair enough, the second half of my comment didn’t really follow from the first. But I think my point stands about the relative attention paid to FB compared to other platforms. I don’t get it.
tenaciousDaniel··on Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return
I still have a FB account because my family is on there, and even then I check it maybe once a month, if that. It's just not in my life anymore. When I do go on there, I have a hard time imagining how anyone could get sucked into it.

Sometimes I feel like FB is a kind of scapegoat for social critique. Maybe because it's the largest, but not sure.

Personally, it seems like Twitter is a much more malevolent cultural force. The amount of toxicity that arises out of that platform is overwhelming, and the addiction factor is much more affective. I'm not saying FB doesn't deserve criticism, but I wonder why these other platforms don't get the same attention.

tenaciousDaniel··on It is easier to educate a Do-er than to motivate the educated
"Motion before emotion" - I love that.
tenaciousDaniel··on Gentle introduction to GPUs inner workings
Thanks! I’m a JS dev who happens to be very interested in getting into graphics.
tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Yeah like I said, I could see it going either way. I think your response would be reasonable, and I would be on board with it. I've never been in charge of an open source community so it's hard to say exactly what I'd do, but you're right that typically these kinds of decisions persist in perpetuity. With that in mind I'd be more likely to have a conversation, so long as the person can demonstrate that they understand why those jokes can't be tolerated.
tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
I could see it going either way, but come on, no one in their right mind would think that that's an appropriate joke to make in a public thread with members of a professional community.
tenaciousDaniel··on CNLabelContactRelationYoungerCousinMothersSiblingsDaughterOrFathersSistersDaught
Oh my god that's hilarious. I had no idea why it was rendering as if it was a desktop screen. lol.
tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
They're part of a class but no, not everyone is "legally" protected. Short people are not a legally protected class, hence why it's possible to have height restrictions in certain employment roles (in the US at least).

But that kind of underscores why "legally protected class" really doesn't make sense for a CoC. Like yeah short people aren't legally protected...but any good CoC should prohibit harassment and abuse against people for their height. Obviously.

tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
But...like...just say no? Am I missing something? If the current CoC covers offensive jokes like the one in question, then simply assert that the CoC covers it and be done with it.

If someone is willing to go through the CoC with a fine tooth comb, they're likely going to find something they could potentially use to defend themselves. Just say no!

The changes open up so much interpretation that anyone could use it to kick out people for all sorts of silly reasons.

tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
But that's kind of the point, no? You could literally just have your comment as the CoC and it would be good enough to cover the joke in question.

So why is the pull request necessary? It very obviously opens up the potential to be abused by people who would love to kick others out of the community because they don't like their political opinions.

tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
It's a bit buried in the GH discussion, but someone else posted it here:

"Maybe this has been written for women, having calculated their age ;)"

If I were in charge of a community or mailing list, I would kick the person who wrote that off. But I simply don't see how (a) the existing rules didn't do enough to cover this, or (b) the changes will resolve those issues without causing other problems.

tenaciousDaniel··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Even more than US-centric, the commenters in the GH discussion explicitly refer to California laws. The internet is not California, regardless of what the technologists who live there would like to believe.

(to be clear, I'm completely in favor of protecting people from harassment and abuse, though I strongly disagree with reserving that only to legally protected classes).

tenaciousDaniel··on Review of “The Fabric of Reality” by David Deutsch (2001) [pdf]
I never got through the beginning of infinity, but I did read the first few sections of the book. The argument about removing ourselves from observation in order to achieve better observation was a pretty astounding revelation for me; I'd never thought about science in that way. He's a brilliant dude.
tenaciousDaniel··on What if Git worked with programming languages?
I'm in the process of building a programming language for UI designers, and realized that diffing the AST (or some other kind of object notation) would be far more useful and understandable. I'll probably be digging into this exact problem within the next year or so.
tenaciousDaniel··on I just don’t want to be busy anymore
That's what my doctor told me. I'm sure there are differing opinions but meh whatever, I know it could be higher so that's good enough.
tenaciousDaniel··on I just don’t want to be busy anymore
I feel that way now but I'm only 37. I knew it was a bit soon so I went to a doctor, and turns out my testosterone is at 250 (whereas at my age it should be over 1,000).

No idea if that's something you've already explored, but felt it couldn't hurt to share.

tenaciousDaniel··on Apple Will Not Reinstate Epic’s Fortnite Developer Account
Yep. The time is really good for a new entry in the OS landscape. I'd jump ship pretty easily to anything that isn't windows.
tenaciousDaniel··on Practical Front-End Architecture
The game industry and the web industry are so closely tied together in terms of their core working model and architecture. It really is strange that there hasn't been much in the way of cross-domain inspiration or knowledge sharing.
tenaciousDaniel··on A mathematician's guided tour through higher dimensions
I'm not sure what the intent of this comment is, but it comes off as pompous and condescending.
tenaciousDaniel··on A mathematician's guided tour through higher dimensions
Every time I try to understand the 4th+ dimension, my brain just completely breaks and I'm left feeling angry. I'm a highly visual thinker so it's difficult for me to grasp concepts like that.

Someone once told me that in the same way a 3D object casts a 2D shadow, a 4D object casts a 3D shadow. I just...can't. I can't wrap my head around that no matter how hard I try.
