temporarely··on Why it's hard to get hired despite glowing jobs reports
They serve no purpose. Now we also have besides these parasitical firms the shell 'job boards' that send the job seekers on n hops to finally get to an application form. These are truly worthy of scorn as they "earn" their living by wasting the time of those who are earnestly looking for means of livelihood.
temporarely··on Why it's hard to get hired despite glowing jobs reports
In 3 decades in this disappointing field every single interaction with a recruiter has been an utter waste of time.
temporarely··on Why it's hard to get hired despite glowing jobs reports
> interview game

Yes, mediocre people like to select the same.

> Handling minor everyday disagreements

is a skill that does not need to be "prepared for" in an interview. And naturally the mediocrities that think asking the standard question and getting the standard answer back are also in for a surprise.

temporarely··on Why the Military Can't Trust [LLM] AI
https://archive.is/3av3I

"LLMs develop most of their skills during pretraining—but success depends on the quality, size, and variety of the data they consume. So much text is needed that it is practically impossible for an LLM to be taught solely on vetted high-quality data. This means accepting lower quality data, too. For the armed forces, an LLM cannot be trained on military data alone; it still needs more generic forms of information, including recipes, romance novels, and the day-to-day digital exchanges that populate the Internet."

Being reminded of that fact it occurs that LLMs are to decision making systems what Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS) were to investment. "AAA" rating with tranches full of crap.

That didn't end well, did it?

temporarely··on Why SQLite Uses Bytecode
A while back was musing if it was possible to come up with something resembling the instruction set for a CPU for an abstract relational-engine. Is this basically what SQLite is doing with bytecodes?

temporarely··on Husband and wife outed as GRU spies aiding bombings and poisonings across Europe

It's called Realism.

temporarely··on Husband and wife outed as GRU spies aiding bombings and poisonings across Europe
That's a fair statement. My standard for this type of show remains BBC's Tinker Tailor Solider Spy (1979) and the follow up Smiley's People (1982).

Alec Guinness owns Smiley. Just perfect. Absolutely gripping yet low budget [+] it actually demands that you use your intellect to keep up. If you haven't seen those I say whip up ye old torrent client and get some.

Anyways, I did say "too greatly". Someone up there says "no spoilers" so ..

temporarely··on Husband and wife outed as GRU spies aiding bombings and poisonings across Europe
The most realistic Russian sleeper scenario imo was in Slow Horses. Brits don't insult your intelligence too greatly in their spook shows; the American variety always involves some sort of super-human characters. It's good as entertainment, the Americans, but just over the top.

Dark patterns in finding this setting that 99.999% of normies would not even know of, ever. But equally a plausible excuse that "there is a setting to shut it off". Right.

temporarely··on The Ivy League and other elite private colleges are losing esteem

It's called Cognitive dissonance. False notions meet the hard surface of reality and are shattered. The criminal (fact) PM of that "only democracy" gave public command to his US stooges (our representatives) and immediately the Israeli-trained dogs are let loose on Americans exercising "free speech".

temporarely··on Software Design Principles I Learned the Hard Way
No, one source of truth of 'the state'. A "system of record" in db parlance. DRY is concerned with the code, i.e. algorithm.
temporarely··on Software Design Principles I Learned the Hard Way
I think you miss the fine point here. Ontological truth =/= Good domain modeling. OP is not arguing against domain modeling, rather a likely common trap of creating an analog of 'the world' (however delimited) as foundation for the model. I know exactly what they mean because I am guilty as charged. I used to do this all the time in mid career.

temporarely··on Jimmy Carter UFO Incident
Cameras don't have minds. Mind is not a camera. We do not know the nature of consciousness nor the true dimensionality of our reality. Joshua supposedly made the Sun stop and so do gurus in India (as a matter of routine) per numerous first hand reports, but no camera has ever captured it.
temporarely··on Go or Rust? Just Listen to the Bots
Interesting. I only butted heads with Golang in the second phase of use. This is when we were fed the mantra of "you're not doing it right" and "the go way" (which turned out to be true.) This was an unusual experience for me in terms of programming. Rust (never tried beyond reading the spec :) per comments over the years also has that feature but unlike Go it is not something you can just pick up in a day. I released the initial working cut of an OSS driver for a DB 3 days after Go was released. I doubt I could do the same with Rust.
temporarely··on British Columbia to recriminalize use of drugs in public spaces
Regrettable that you are not being engaged in a verbalized discussion. I appreciate your thoughtful comments, as someone who habitually uses pot and tobacco and recognizes the harmful effects of these substances. At least society is now fully onboard in recognizing the harm of habitual tobacco use. Pot is a mixed bag, there is some good in it but it is possible that its harm exceeds its benefits. It is certainly addictive, in my experience. It is not easy at all to stop. That said, I've always found the punitive legal measures against pot to have been highly excessive and possibly motivated by considerations other than public health, as its roots have clear racist ('Reefer madness') dimensions. These days however I am rather alarmed at the promotion of pot as a benign substance. I have seriously wondered if its liberalization is a means at social pacification (ala Victory Gin of 1984) given the grave distortions that have manifested in Western society, specially in the economic dimension. There is money to be made and the plebes now have a outlet that keeps them content.

It is not clear to me if law in fact incentivizes good behavior. In general my view on these matters -- social architecture -- is that form can not engender meaning. Meaning needs to be project into form, in the sense of it being an expression of collective understanding. This brings up the matter of pedagogical aspect of social order, to wit, your views would be entirely orthodox in a strict patriarchal societal order. And our society is no longer that, as you must know.

"The most important things about beliefs are whether they are true. The most important thing about motives is whether they are good."

I saw this on your profile page. What is necessary is that actions are timely and true. As to "good", I hope we agree that what is true is by definition good (if timely) and what is good can not possibly be false or untimely. So in my opinion, it suffices to say "Be timely, be true".

First of all, the I in IRGC stands for Islamic and not Iran. In fact, neither their logo or any of their patches mentions the word IRAN.

As my beloved homeland is, imo, under effective coercive occupation of Islamist ideologues (there is not a even hint of godliness in that regime) it is preferred that you refer to the regime by its name IRI and not cast calumny on the beauty that is IRAN.

Sure, but you can teach yourself Go in a couple of days, likely having running code from the get go. I think with Rust you will have more frustrating interactions with mr. compiler in the beginning.

temporarely··on Today Microsoft Banned My Country Iran from Minecraft
IRI is likely in control of IRGC at this point. They summoned ambassadors the other week with FM completely out of the loop! The revolutionary courts just ignored the supreme court's judgment and sentenced Toomaj Salahi -- a rap artist that expressed the voice of the people in his dissident songs -- to death.
