tempaccount5050··on The creative software industry has declared war on Adobe
These threads remind me of the MS threads. Just like MS doesn't care about home users, Adobe doesnt care about hobbyists. Unless you're a professional graphic designer, you're probably using less than 1% of its capabilities and frankly have a pretty worthless opinion on it. "Well I'm a software dev and I use Lightroom so I kinda know what I'm talking about". No, you don't.
tempaccount5050··on NIST scientists create 'any wavelength' lasers
Nope, it's 1/2 - 2/3 the speed of light depending on the metals used.
tempaccount5050··on All 12 moonwalkers had "lunar hay fever" from dust smelling like gunpowder (2018)
That's just simply not true at all, I don't know where you're getting this idea. Literally every Olympic athlete was more fit that an any astronaut ever.
tempaccount5050··on The Utopia of the Family Computer
It wasn't inappropriate, it's just that you typically didn't have multiple cable boxes. There wasn't really a reason to have a TV in a kids room if you're only getting OTA broadcasting, there wasn't much for kids other than like Saturday morning cartoons. I knew plenty of kids in the 90s with a video game console and TV in their room though. It was for games, not TV watching.
tempaccount5050··on Codex for almost everything
The first time I tried anthropics version it burned up all its tokens in like 10 minutes and left me stuck in a broken state. So I uninstalled it.
tempaccount5050··on We gave an AI a 3 year retail lease and asked it to make a profit
That's exactly what I expected. It's completely stuck and has no idea what to do. Every long term task I've tried ended up the same way. LLMs have no idea how to take initiative and/or realize they are stuck banging their heads against the wall.
tempaccount5050··on Anna's Archive loses $322M Spotify piracy case without a fight
Yep. If you can't make it with Spotify and all the social media channels available, you definitely wouldn't have made it before all of this stuff.
tempaccount5050··on Anna's Archive loses $322M Spotify piracy case without a fight
> I don't like what they do to artists.

Global distribution. For $40/year. That was fucking unheard of 20 years ago. Spotify is the best thing that ever happened to artists. Don't let the mediocre one's who blame their lack of success on Spotify fool you. They don't make money because they likely suck and can't book dates because no one wants to see them.

tempaccount5050··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
Right but the approach is different. Now the idea is as soon as you have a song, you record and release it. You don't wait until you have 45 minutes or 12 tracks or whatever. The album comes out later, but it's just a collection of songs (and that arguably isn't really new either).
tempaccount5050··on The dangers of California's legislation to censor 3D printing
Not that I support any of these obviously stupid bills but:

> what's special about 3d printers?

They can make guns made out of plastic and metal detectors are kind of the primary way we try to find guns on people.

You are probably right about the lobbying group, I agree.

Edit: I'm not saying it makes sense, but this is the angle the congress folks are taking, sheesh.

tempaccount5050··on Rare concert recordings are landing on the Internet Archive
Well that would be legal/contractual stuff you signed with the label. Doesn't have anything to do with managers, which was why I wasn't really sure what parent was saying.
tempaccount5050··on Backblaze has stopped backing up OneDrive and Dropbox folders and maybe others
At least at the enterprise level, I've never seen anyone use Backblaze for this. You want to use a cloud level backup like Rubrik/Veeam/Cohesity. Trying to back up cloud based files locally is a fools errand. Granted it sucks that they dropped this without proper communication, but it's already a bad solution.
tempaccount5050··on Rare concert recordings are landing on the Internet Archive
I agree mostly but take issue with "not needing managers". As someone who went from split shows to big venues to touring, managers (good ones) are a godsend.

Will there be convenient parking?

Do they have adequate power?

Is the stage big enough?

Do we need to book sound?

Is there a weather contingency?

Where can we sleep?

What time is load in?

What time is sound check?

What form of payment?

How will they be advertising?

Who do we give promotional materials to?

Etc etc. Having someone take care of all this stuff allows us to focus on practicing and recording (which has another long list of questions that need to be addressed).

Not to mention networking and venue access. Put all that stuff together and it's a full time job that artists are poorly equipped to handle.

tempaccount5050··on US appeals court declares 158-year-old home distilling ban unconstitutional
That's literally how it works right now.
tempaccount5050··on Rockstar Games Hacked, Hackers Threaten a Massive Data Leak If Not Paid Ransom
I've seen companies literally mirror every piece of data they have in snowflake to do AI/analytics stuff. There's probably a lot of of shit in there.
tempaccount5050··on Penguin 'Toxicologists' Find PFAS Chemicals in Remote Patagonia
That's from the source then. Drinkable water does not dissolve lead.
tempaccount5050··on Artemis II safely splashes down
You're acting like if it fails they can just say "Well we said it was 1/3!" and then just get on with it. "Oops we lost a zillion taxpayer dollars and no one will mind and maybe they'll give us more money this time around!" That's just not how the world works.
tempaccount5050··on Penguin 'Toxicologists' Find PFAS Chemicals in Remote Patagonia
Because lead doesn't readily leach into water. Your water supply has to be real fucked up for that to happen.
tempaccount5050··on Move Detroit
The weather needs to be your biggest consideration. Cars get eaten alive by salt and you'll need one for sure. It's cold 6 months a year and in the winter you get like 8 hours of sunlight, while you're at work. If you are used to warmer climates you'll probably hate it. It is cheap though, if money is your thing.
tempaccount5050··on Move Detroit
I'll give you $20 to drive across the country to deliver me a pizza. At least it's not nothing right? As if getting a small amount of cash is even in the equation at all. The 99.999% bulk of the deal is uprooting your life to live in Detroit. I wouldn't move 30 minutes away from my home for $1000. It wouldn't even cover the PTO I have to take much less the moving costs.
tempaccount5050··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
No, the game has changed. Back then, the singles were typically accompanied by an album, even if it was just filler. It's better to release singles now due to the way the Spotify and iTunes algos work. Best practice is now to release your songs one at a time rather than a full album (at least if you aren't an established player).
tempaccount5050··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
Oh, so you are saying there might be other cases than your own? Or do you think that the way you work is the only way? I'm curious to find out whether or not the configuration of your phone and accounts is the only one. If it is, let's talk so we can fix a multimillion dollar problem with email. Please, send me a message ASAP.
tempaccount5050··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
Last company I had to deal with this was about 1500 users and we got 2-3 tickets a week on Apple Mail sync issues. "Switch to the outlook app, ticket closed"
tempaccount5050··on Demand for autism care is soaring
Yes, I do remember. That was a latent effect of the great depression mixed with grandma not having to work so that was her hobby. Pretty tired of having a hobby or specific domain knowledge being labeled as "lol autism".
tempaccount5050··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
The last company I worked for had copilot pretty well integrated into M365/Sharepoint/Teams. It didn't really help me get more work done but it was pretty clutch at finding information. "What meeting did we discuss such and such for X project?" And it'd get me the meeting with the notes and recording. "Which SharePoint site do the docs for that live in?" Etc. That was about all it was good for though.
tempaccount5050··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
It's a Windows subsystem. For running Linux.
tempaccount5050··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
Apple Mail does not play nicely with Outlook/Exchange/M365 accounts. Everywhere I've worked had said "You can use Apple Mail if you want, but IT won't be supporting it. Outlook app only." Always issues with syncing mail or contacts.
tempaccount5050··on Go hard on agents, not on your filesystem
I don't understand why file and folder permissions are such a mystery. Just... don't let it clobber things it shouldn't.
tempaccount5050··on Man pleads guilty to $8M AI-generated music scheme
Nah, that's insane. "You ticked our endolpoint KPI shit in a way we don't like" = actual crime? Gtfo
tempaccount5050··on Conway's Game of Life, in real life
Ha, I remember doing this with my Apple //. I forget what I was doing, but realized if I could set a pixel and later get what color was drawn at that location I could use it as a big array. Didn't know about peek/poke yet. One of those core "computers are magic" memories.
