Exactly what Xirgil said, Nvidia shouldn't be punished for being good at their job

temp_praneshp··on Y Combinator Compensation Numbers
But in any offer I have received, I've seen two numbers: Preferred value(?): X, and strike price: Y, with Y well below X.

In any case, you don't have to teach me all about options here, I was just curious :)

temp_praneshp··on Y Combinator Compensation Numbers
>(If a company valuation stays flat, stock options are worthless - but RSUs have value)

Can you help me understand why? I'd expect if you're granted options at a strike price of $Y, you will still make money as long as the valuation at liquidation time is more than $Y.

Parent made a wildly inaccurate statement, and had a (quickly deleted) snarky follow-up to jeremyjh's reply. If I come back to this thread in a year, I don't want to be confused.

It seems like you flagged my comment because you didn't like it, consider it similar behavior.

temp_praneshp··on LinkedIn ad prices up as X plummets
None of my actual jobs were through linkedin, but that's just luck. I've done several onsites as a result of either applying through linkedin, or because someone messaged me.

temp_praneshp··on Pitfalls of Helm – Insights from 3 years with the leading K8s package manager
at my current place, we started off with kustomize. I rewrote everything into helm, which was good initially (at least you can force inject some common params, and others can include this in their charts).

But people (including me) were unhappy at yaml reading; I also grew to hate it with a passion because it's neither go nor yaml, and super difficult to read in general. We are a typescript company, and https://cdk8s.io/ has been great for us. We can unit test parts of charts without rendering the whole thing, distribute canonical pod/deployment/service definitions, etc.

In all of the cases, we combined this with config outputted by terraform, for env specific overrides, etc.

temp_praneshp··on United Airlines plans to board passengers with window seats first
I have done 50s of flights and encountered it about quite often (at least 50% of the flights I have been on, likely close to 100%). Esp in the second half of boarding, people just want to be safe not sorry.

temp_praneshp··on Slack’s migration to a cellular architecture
Yes. to put it a bit bluntly, you are using a very generic google search and being blind to nuance.

us-east-1 does have more problems than other zones due to a variety of reasons, but it rarely (ie, once a few years) goes down as a whole. As long as you're in several AZs within us-east-1, the impact of most outages should not take you down completely. In the context of the comment you are replying to, your google search links are lazy and fail to see the big picture.

temp_praneshp··on Ford slashes prices of F-150 Lightning trucks as EV wars heat up
This is a dishonest cherry-pick. Those farmers are probably targets for the base Pro version. 92k is not way above what a Denali or F-150 limited costs.

"The base Pro variant of Lightning now carries a suggested retail price of $49,995, compared to its prior price of $59,974, while the higher-end Platinum model will cost about 6.2% less, at $91,995."

Premium plus an addon to block sponsors (https://sponsor.ajay.app/) has been great for me. I hate watching youtube on the tv now, because that still has sponsor blocks
temp_praneshp··on Why don’t Inter Milan have a shirt sponsor?
This used to be my go-to example of weird sponsorship, but some of the F1 sponsorships in the last 10 years make AIG sound like a well run company
temp_praneshp··on We glued together content moderation to stop soccer pirates
> It's odd that you seem to think popularity = it would be easier.

Yeah, I can see how my line of thinking doesn't make sense. I was thinking popular -> can earn more from ads, less popular -> need subscribers, but there is no way tennis shows more ads than football

In India it'd be unthinkable to put cricket on paid channels, because the money is from putting ads wherever there's space

temp_praneshp··on We glued together content moderation to stop soccer pirates
If you watch Tottenham despite all that, you deserve the pain their football causes.

Jokes apart, is the BT Sports "early kick off games" completely different from the Sky Sports game you mentioned? That's ridiculous. I was in England in Summer 2019 for the cricket world cup, and was shocked at how difficult it was to watch the games on TV. Wimbledon was very easy though, so maybe Tennis is way more popular?

Closely followed by engineers who happily implement this kind of shit (unless you included them already)

temp_praneshp··on De-Stressing Booking.com (2019)
This is definitely incorrect (has no customer support). Maybe they can choose to fuck you over sometimes, but I have definitely used their customer support as recently as december 2022 (first to call from my destination for some onsite help, then later after the trip to get money back). I wouldn't say they were seamless (that would be if there was no problem at all), but definitely good enough.
