temp2022account··on Elon Musk Knocked Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ Off Course
Man that's dumb; I tested my Hyundai Elantra vs a Model 3 and found the Elantra's steering wheel actually tracked the road, in comparison the Tesla kinda swayed from side to side and only moved the wheel when on a direct (>15 degree angle) course to exit the lane it was in.

I expect car sensors will grow in much the same way as sensors used in airliners, and that industry ensures _everything_ is redundant so one sensor failure domain can't compromise the entire vehicle.

temp2022account··on Is something wrong with Amazon Photos? I lost 240k photos
Sharing my family-photo-backup system:

- Synology NAS is accessible on LAN & phones sync photos when at home

- Nightly rsync from internal NAS storage to 1 external (non-raid) hard drive

The nightly rsync does not delete files, so the external hard drive is pretty close to an off-site backup even though it's still attached. The only better thing I've thought of doing is mounting it ro after backups + re-mounting before backups.

At the end of the day we get 3 copies of data: the photo on your phone, the photo on the shared NAS, and the photo on an external hard drive that spends 99% of its life spun down.

temp2022account··on Tester tells Fed to ‘claw back’ bonuses from Silicon Valley Bank execs
I disagree, that sounds dumb. It would set precedent for failing companies with moderately good financials to just throw in the towel early and get away with not paying employees for their last month of service. The closer we get to employment contracts that are "here's your paycheck, but if someone on social media doesn't like us we'll need that back in 30 days" the closer we get to becoming a mafia that ends up hurting the weakest first and extending the moats of large businesses infinitely.
temp2022account··on T-Mobile Reaches Agreement to Acquire Mint Mobile for Up to $1.35B
Purely for the anecdata, I'm also in this group. Had Tracfone's $40/mo plan for a few years and then a cc change caused a missed payment. Within 8 hours my service was discontinued, which was a huge headache trying to 2-factor my way into my tracfone account to update cc details. In the end I decided to move to a verizon plan for twice as much but now I have unlimited data and a company that _sounds_ like it won't throw you around at the smallest paperwork hiccup.

temp2022account··on Why Are All Action Heroes Named Jack, James, or John?
Cool so I can build suspense/tension by naming my hero John and my villain Jack, the audience won't have a clue until the final showdown!
temp2022account··on Two U.S. men charged in 2022 hacking of DEA portal
A whopping number of online scams begin with bluffs, the scammer only needs 1% of people to believe them. The instagram account takeover is for emotional leverage to get a person further away from their friends. A second story will be concoted to get money from them.

Doesn't have to be a govt conspiracy, facebook will sell you IDs->IP address. It's literally their business model, answering the question "Who bought stuff where, or when do people want to buy stuff?". "where" and "when" can be derived from a time-series of IPs, for example to know if you observed something on your phone over wifi (implying you live with others, so network-based ads would be most effective) or cellular (implying you're alone rn + targeted ads are better).
temp2022account··on Show HN: I revived a game I abandoned 5yo ago and released it for free today
Wow, never expected to see "Gaben Newell is a big-tech consumer-control suit" from anyone around here. For what it's worth I'm a huge fan of Steam, if you want to avoid it for personal reasons just go download a copy off the devs blog (linked here: https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=73043.0)
temp2022account··on RFC: Organizations for Sourcehut
Drew just doesn't want to have to deal with kids while being able to finance a non-megacorp-owned place for repositories, sourcehut is less expensive than netflix. IMO the true disaster is a generation of freeloaders demanding stuff all the time; they end up creating the perverse incentives that cause advertising to have more governing/mind control power than our states.

temp2022account··on Apple declaring war on budget Android phones with low-cost iPhone SE 4
Agreed, the iPhone mini is the only thing that comes close to my old blackberry which I still pang over having to give up in 2019. Without it I'll probably invest in a good landline & get my social group to understand they can't reach me while I'm out.
temp2022account··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent startup six-figure loan after SVB collapse
2,000; 4,000; 16,000; 32,000; 64,000; and 128,000 are my favorite thousands! We don't talk about 8 anymore, black sheep of the thousands family.

temp2022account··on Denmark’s Welfare State Became a Surveillance Nightmare
Welfare benefits _are_ universal, you need only qualify for them. The problematic fraud is those who qualified and desire to return to regular society, but do not want to return their benefit to their fellow taxpayers. The other fraud is those who qualify and have no desire to return to society, for which I think a small colony maintained by governments w/ tech from the last century would be appropriate. No modern requirements, no modern pleasures, cheap to operate and as reasonably safe as a farm in the late 1800s could be.
temp2022account··on Linus Torvalds: if you cannot explain a merge, then JUST DON'T DO IT
I think Linus is making a good point, in a project as long-running as the kernel having commit messages like "Merge temp-branch-a into temp-branch-a-next" is clutter and really ought not make it into `master`. Obviously Linus could just manually re-merge the changes, picking out the commits individually, but that's a ton of work and doesn't scale well as contributors grow.
temp2022account··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
To be fair that info is already available w/ port sequence analysis, the same machine will pick from the same set of ephemeral ports for outgoing connections. I'd say the time for vanity privacy arguments is over, I'm all-in for team globally routable addresses w/ firewalls just saying "yes" or "no" to connections instead of routers guessing at port mappings.
temp2022account··on Why Python keeps growing, explained
> coworkers who churn out shiny new things at 10x the speed

Sounds like a classic web-dev perspective, my customers hate when we ship broken tools because it ruins their work, new feature velocity be dammned. We love our borrow checker because initially you run at 0.5x velocity but post-25kSLOC you get to run at 2x velocity, which continues to mystify managers worldwide.

temp2022account··on The Inverse Jim Cramer ETF
Can't buy what nobody owns, and bitcoin does have builtin caps for total amount with no way to recover coins sent to lost wallets. It's a nice clean proof that the price must trend to $0.

temp2022account··on What Amazon was thinking during the Comixology layoffs
I do the same thing with movies + anime, I can + will pay for it but streaming is a no mans land for me. It's a useless product that provides no value, but an .mp4 or .avi file can be played back on any hardware I own, anywhere.
temp2022account··on ‘Scanners are complicated’: why Gen Z faces workplace ‘tech shame’
To be fair, scanning from a mobile device has almost zero discoverability. Few mobile OSes ship with a builtin "Scan" app in the same way that they all have a "Camera" app.

What modern societies need is a tax on feature non-discoverability; essentially providing a financial incentive for tech companies to ensure 100% of their features have meaningful uses for their users and that users can find these. At that point whatever details are economic will fall out w/o extended arguments of "what is right/best way to do X".

temp2022account··on New cracks emerge in Elon Musk's Twitter
I mean Twitter is just a blog site, it's not hugely important to the world at large like TV news stations or radios. Let the megalomaniac in the corner have fun with his rockets and electric cars and bird-themed trading cards, Elon certainly isn't causing harm to anyone or anyone else's property.
temp2022account··on Apple Responds to Report About Thieves Spying on iPhone Passcodes
No idea, I still use a regular password b/c that was the fastest thing to type in on a BlackBerry. Never figured how people could memorize numbers more easily than words/phrases.
temp2022account··on LED lighting badly suppresses human melatonin production at night
I have a small python script responsible for dimming my thinkpad + external display; it takes an argument like 'b * 0.95' for 5% reduction, reads HW + SW brightness, and lowers HW brightness to minimum before then reducing the SW brightness.

Pretty nice and the only recent change I've made is making it re-evaluate the expression based on frequency of keystrokes (so 3 brightness-down keys in 1s becomes 9 evaluated decreases in brightness).

temp2022account··on A tale of Phobos – How we almost cracked a ransomware using CUDA
Seconded, I have an external 2tb HDD that stores 1 years worth of daily backups from my 256gb (~180gb used at any time) laptop hard drive. My backup script (https://gist.github.com/Jeffrey-P-McAteer/7d4b9052825914b5e0...) takes maybe 30 minutes for a full backup, 5 minutes for most deltas. Files which are the same get hard-linked to the previous days backups, new files are copied over and content-de-duped by btrfs.
temp2022account··on I’m a Black physician, and I’m appalled by mandated implicit bias training
To be fair I see many americans who prefer it when their laws don't care about your race or gender, and most people would abhor laws that make it easy for 3rd parties to come in and muck around with a child's ideas of race and gender. Heck I wouldn't even be a fan of a political group that marketed hair dye to 12-year-olds.

I recommend you walk around an american city and talk to them sometime, you'll learn way more than on the internet.

temp2022account··on Google search for a local restaurant returns scammer’s ad as top result
I love these analogies to retail markets, but one major difference keeps digital goods from behaving the same way: spoiled food is easy to identify by customers and changes their behavior, incentivizing the quality controls we have today.

Spoiled advertisements/news programs/blog spam are not easy to identify by _todays_ customers, and thus do not incentivize quality controls. I think the solution to todays attention problem is to meet the problem on the same battlefield; attention! If anyone has a clever idea to marry people w/o situational awareness to a flywheel that creates situational awareness lmk.
