telesilla··on Understanding Frontier Artificial Intelligence
I love your thought experiment. May I counter, what purpose does such a machine have to us, that can think beyond our needs? Sorry, but to reference the great Rick and Morty, "your purpose is to pass the butter".
telesilla··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
Suicide decriminalisation, abortion and euthanasia legalization, decriminalisation of homosexuality, same-sex marriage, gender recognition, disability rights, abolition of death penalty, indigenous rights and land sovereignty, probably a lot more. That's in the eighties, nineties and two thousands, depending on the country.
telesilla··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
I agree. My grandmother was not allowed to make decisions over her body, own a bank account, or work after marriage until the late 60s. For many of us, it's definitely a golden age of rights and possibilities.
telesilla··on Lady Gaga, Lena Dunham and surrogacy: Why isn't it causing a scandal in the US?
>able-bodied and fertile celebrities

That seems an unfair assumption. Both the women in the title have been upfront with their medical histories to the press in the last years. (For the record I'm pro-foster care / adoption myself, the wealthy have excessive resources to give unwanted youth a home).

telesilla··on Enjoy Every Sandwich
I hear you. I'm chasing a simple dish of fish and pomegranate sauce I had in (Eastern European) Georgia 25 years ago, haven't been back but go to every Georgian restaurant and hope one day to see it on the menu.
telesilla··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Excellent idea, I'll try this. And for those who don't speak a second language other than English, you could use leet.
telesilla··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
I agree. It's such a pity Cats don't recognize images, would make for wonderful CatTV.
telesilla··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
I think there's still plenty of good stuff here, but agree that is beneficial to be kept up for to date on model evolution. We gotta get through this together.

I'm glad HN isn't a curated feed, it would end up like all the the others.

telesilla··on Claude, change the "Add to Cart" button to blue
This felt very late-90s net art. Stressful but nicely done satire.
telesilla··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1
That's why there are no assistant editor jobs anymore.
telesilla··on Elevator of the Year: Modernization of the Metropolis Trust Building
I don't know if it's still running but the hand-operated elevator in Chicago's Fine Arts building on Sth Michigan Ave deserves an award. I always enjoyed having an excuse to visit the music rooms on the top floors. The first time I visited I was worried but seeing the skill of the operator was something else.

https://soundquality.org/2025/04/chicagos-last-manually-oper...

Maybe they shut it down already and are reading Elevator World for replacement ideas. A glass one please!

telesilla··on Three schoolgirls in Kinsale pulled up a pea plant covered in warts (2014)
Definitely AI written, though it got the point across and it wasn't terrible to read and it was new information to me so I was glad to read it.

At this point what news site isn't AI written? Except for the few remaining human blogs (which are a delight and a pleasure). Why I detected AI: it said "The honest footnote.." at the end. That's how Claude always ends our long-rambling discussions.

telesilla··on How Railroad Crossings Work (2024)
I can't remember the last time I crossed a train track in western europe - trams yes but not trains. Is this being engineered into bridges and tunnels in this part of the world or is this increasingly common. I suddenly feel very safe.
telesilla··on Salad Theory
I refer to the Spanish definition of "ensalada": La ensalada es, en términos generales, un plato que combina verduras frías - a salad is a plate which combines cold vegetables.

Thus pizza, in Spanish, is not a salad, until about an hour after it comes out of the oven.

telesilla··on Borges Labyrinth in Venice reopens to the public
It is a garden, with forking paths.

(I adore Borges, his Aleph story follows me through life, such wonders he opened.. "but all space was there, actual and undiminished"..)

telesilla··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
How does it compare to Wise/Payoneer and other existing payment transfer systems?
telesilla··on Ask HN: Why is AI civil tech and not military first?
I have a similar question. Why is AI not ring-fenced for real problems like cancer research?
telesilla··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
My M1 macbook with 64GB ram is still going great, I think it will be some time yet before I feel the need to upgrade my daily working machine. Team-wise though, we're looking into getting something to run a local model and offset token costs for generic tasks. It's starting to make sense.
telesilla··on France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026
I spent time in the interior of Portugal that had fibre internet, it was very impressive and incredibly helpful to the village. Better payment services and banking for example.
telesilla··on Tim Curry has died
Finding myself in the audience as a young adult and being inculcated into performance art, underground culture, independent film makers and the wonderful weirdos who surrounded me.. All of us wearing pyjamas or petticoats or garters and yelling towards the screen.. What an excellent way to start adulthood, with these ideas of freedom of expression. I hope the traditions continue, and godspeed to Tim Curry.
telesilla··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
EU has started that with the Wero project.

telesilla··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Geopolitics to make sense.
telesilla··on The Amazon tax
I feel the same way about counties and communities. Humans work best when we're working together with smaller groups.
telesilla··on Don't Paste the AI, please
I read this somewhere: "send me instead the prompt you used to ask the AI to tell me something, so I know what it was that you wanted to say"
telesilla··on Why Are Women Leaving Computer Science?
As a woman. I didn't see the need to point it out.
telesilla··on Why Are Women Leaving Computer Science?
Try changing the field, some areas are still exciting and full of innovation in tech. Maybe be part of a small team, or even better start your own. Lots of opportunities to find funding for women-run outfits.
telesilla··on Sensitive Info Goes into 'No Reply' Emails Constantly. This Guy Sees It All
I have a very early Gmail account I still use which collects an unbelievable amount of other people's emails who cannot be bothered to fill out a form correctly, hotel reservations, insurances. I could cancel them all easily and mess with people but I delete and move on.

It's easy to be a bad actor given the conditions that the internet was built on.

telesilla··on Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
The double-dipping unfairness is mostly perceived when there is high unemployment in youth, and we're allowing, via tax rules, for retirement aged persons to have decent returns on their work. They get a living-rate pension AND a job.

Like others note, UBI is a fair solution. Let's have everyone, regardless of age, be able to have a baseline. Then allow extra income form those who enjoy, or value, additional work and income.

telesilla··on Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
In some countries you can reach retirement age, get a pension and keep working. So you profit more. It's complicated as maybe you've paid to your pension since 18yrs of age and you should get some money back, but many pensions aren't based on those actual savings but on tax payers actively funding that pension. Is double dipping ok then?
telesilla··on São Paulo resident transforms degraded area into urban forest
I've always admired Madrid's Rio and also Valencia. Adding trees to urban life == massive social win.
