Same - I picked up a working HP7475a last week and have found some sharpies that fit. This article just accelerated my learning by months
tekstar··on Apple Approves Parler to Return to App Store
> and it's definitely not Amazon's job to enforce the law.

It's about liability, and big corp's allergy to it.

> I do feel however, that Amazon shouldn't be allowed to drop customers without a 3 month notice unless said customers have done something actually illegal, and by that I mean 'illegal as designated by an actual Judge'.

That's not how liability works

tekstar··on Apple Approves Parler to Return to App Store
Oh please. Laws exist, platforms must ensure their customers follow the laws, and when a customer refuses to remove illegal content or implement a moderation policy the platform has the choice to accept the liability or remove the customer. Proof is right here, with some moderation changes they let Parler back in.

I enabled SSH on my NAS and use git over ssh for some stuff that never leaves my home network. For stuff I share a bit more widely I use git-shell over SSH with a few scripts to create and list repositories on a 5$ VPS.

But for bigger projects I now use github as I missed CI and pull request review flows, even for my own work

In the 90s, there was a sci fi book in my elementary school library about this very subject. I swore it was by William Shatner (it wasn't), and I had the name slightly wrong, so I hadn't been able to find it again until tonight.

tekstar··on Tesla Admits Current ‘Full Self-Driving Beta’ Will Always Be a Level 2 System
I've done enough really boring driving to find that about once in every N hours (depending on the road) a very NOT boring event will occur, requiring immediate and correct response. I don't think any road exists without that happening.

Yes this is making the assumption that, when the unexpected occurs, an experienced human driver still outperforms whatever self driving code may be running.

tekstar··on Spectrum: Open-source Audio Unit ports of Mutable Instrument eurorack modules
Hi, If you're interested in learning to build Audio Units, it can be a uphill battle. Most of the examples are very minimal and incomplete. When I started out, there was no complete synthesizer or effect that had been open sourced so I had to stumble through a lot of weird bugs, edge cases, and incomplete examples to build Spectrum.

Spectrum's powered by open source. The main DSP code is based on Mutable Instruments code(1), which Emilie has graciously open sourced for many years. Her code has inspired and empowered countless little synth designers like myself to make something else of value, so I figured it was sort of my responsibility to do the same and share what I've learnt.

tekstar··on Users are losing out against Big Sur’s sealed System
I'm still on Catalina. I've read reports that on Big Sur you cannot remove the kext and re-enable CSR. Seems the only solution might be to leave csr disabled, which would be unfortunate.
tekstar··on Users are losing out against Big Sur’s sealed System
My ~2013 macbook pro has this issue where, if AppleThunderboltNHI.kext is loaded, it will crash and restart every couple minutes on batteries. I'm not the only one with this issue. If you google that kext you'll see it's an issue with a lot of us and it's a shame that it's such a dumb problem because otherwise this 9 year old laptop is absolutely great to work with. SSD, 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM. Magsafe and good keyboard.

So anyways, this locked-down system volume is a real problem because typically after a system update I reboot into recovery mode, disable CSR, remove the kext, re-enable CSR and then I'm good until the next OS update where the kext is re-added and my computer starts to crash again.

It seems like a bigger issue now to remove that kext, to deal with Apple's own software problem, to keep using my old laptop. What a pain.

tekstar··on Sonobus: Open-source app for low latency peer-to-peer audio
Yep!

We had a zoom video going at the same time so we could look at each other. What tripped my brain up the most was if I looked for rhythm cues from the video while playing, even my own video would not be in sync and I would lose the zone where I could play in delayed time and have to restart

tekstar··on Sonobus: Open-source app for low latency peer-to-peer audio
The most important thing when you do this is that you don't listen to your local audio signal, you only listen to the mixed signal coming from the server. That puts you in time with everyone else, more or less.

Roundtrip latency was under 30ms, which you definitely feel but your brain can compensate for.

The funny effect overall though is that because you're delayed and everyone else is delayed, you end up sort of waiting for the other player, and they end up waiting for you, so instead of the classic band "everyone speeds up" it's like everyone progressively slows down as the song progresses.

We haven't tried with our drummer actually playing drums, he's just been recording against other parts we provide. I don't think it'll work very well because his acoustic kit will be too loud and he'll hear that as well as the delayed drum sound, which for him will feel like a stuttery mess

tekstar··on Sonobus: Open-source app for low latency peer-to-peer audio
15 years ago I played in a band with some friends.

We now all love in different cities. Due to the pandemic and lockdowns we ended up reconnecting and despite the distance we are jamming and working on songs like we never left the drummers basement.

Strongly recommend jamulus.io. It is fast enough to actually jam on music with other players.

tekstar··on The evidence linking nitrates and nitrites to cancer
I can't speak to what they actually mean, but not all of the 8800 British cancer cases will die from cancer, so I guess you missed that difference in the sentence.
tekstar··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W21) – Direct air capture of CO2 using cooling towers
Trees capture co2 into the biosphere, and when they do so it is temporary (~100 years by the time they've decomposed and released it back in to the atmosphere). Still, planting trees helps hold more co2 from the atmosphere and needs to be part of the solution. Especially if we can re-green areas that are currently barren, like deserts.

Proper sequestering, which I agree doesn't really exist yet, is to capture co2 back into the geosphere.
