tekromancr··on Turning web design mockups into code with Deep Learning
Damn, it's almost like developers are going to need to learn to focus on using code to solve business problems, rather than just focusing on being able to write code and calling it a day. XD

tekromancr··on A RAM Edition of Dirty Coding Tricks
The one on the last page about using dexdrive was pretty cool. I used a similar technique to create ps1 save files that would trigger an exploit on the ps2 that would load unsigned code. I miss being able to do stuff like that. Modern systems are so locked down.
tekromancr··on How I recovered cryptocurrency from a broken laptop
The problem there is that you can't do instant transactions. You need to transfer cash, wait for that to be received by GDAX, then trade. Unless you keep cash on gdax/coinbase, you will still need to buy coinbase if you are buying an unexpected dip.
tekromancr··on Lightbot: Puzzles Game Using Programming Logic
Yea! ShenzenIO is my jam! i have probably dumped dozens of hours playing that.
tekromancr··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
Sort of. For situations where the coin represents some ambiguous "share" of the project, absolutely.

However, when the tokens are used as an incentive mechanism for a fledgling decentralized network, I think it makes a bit more sense. Things like Sia or Storj or Ether or Ark where the token is there to function as a cost/reward for using/providing the service that the network provides (filestorage, smart contracts, decentralized cryptocurrency exchange) I believe that it actually does have some intrinsic value.

tekromancr··on Driving for Uber and Lyft
There are companies that explicitly rent cars to rideshare drivers. The rates are around 300-500 per week. I did some contract work for one of them.
tekromancr··on Brave expands Basic Attention Token platform to YouTube
I was speaking more of platforms like patreon.
tekromancr··on A list of Game Boy development resources
Maybe.

One of the most formative events for me as a programmer was playing with the gameshark on ps1. It had a debugger where you could press a button on the device and it would halt the system. Then you could search through the memory and alter values. Realizing that everything you saw and did, everything about the state of the entire game world was just numbers in memory was mind blowing. It instantly broke the illusion, but what it was replaced with was even more magical.

I realized that I could do things like set the health bar, or number of lives to a fixed value. I could change the height of the character and "fly" around. I could do anything, as long as I could figure out how it was represented in ram.

It was a pretty big deal to 10-year old me. A few days later I was using a computer and it dawned on me that the same thing applied to the computer I was using at school.

But the status quo of "Put tons of work producing content and hope that youtube doesn't demonetize, because then my patreon links get deleted." is also pretty fucked.

I am just glad somebody is trying to fix content monetization online without taking 30% for, what, handling payments?

tekromancr··on A Sampling of Anti-Decompilation Techniques
There is a great collection on the internet archive where someone has gone through and unprotected tons of apple][ disks and documented the copy protection. It's pretty good reading, but a little repetitive after a while. https://archive.org/details/apple_ii_library_4am&tab=about

Great point! I never stopped to consider it as an accessibility technology.
tekromancr··on To Fight Revenge Porn, Facebook Is Asking to See Your Nudes
There was a great Reply All episode about this just last week. It's about facebook, but a lot of the points would apply to google. https://gimletmedia.com/episode/109-facebook-spying/

Short answer, no, they probably aren't listening. But they know enough other information about you that they don't need to.

tekromancr··on MythBuster's Hyneman Launches IndieGogo to Build VR Shoes Like Mini Treadmills
That's incredibly insightful. The way I see lots of people charge their phones, you have a long cable so you can continue using it when it's charging. with the wireless charging, you have to leave it locked in place while it charges at 500ma for hours. It's neat at starbucks where I can pick up a quick extra few percent on my battery bar, but otherwise pretty useless.
tekromancr··on Breitbart, other conservative outlets escalate anti-SpaceX campaign
The hundreds, maybe thousands, of people working under him. The majority of which would need to agree that project "Dr. Evil style giant space rock randsom" was a good idea.

tekromancr··on What Would Happen If There Were No Number 6?
Because dividing by 0 is a logical paradox, akin to "This statement is False". Sure x=1/0 looks like a valid syntactic construction, it doesn't comply with the logical system it exists within. Try looking at it using elementary algebra;

x=1/0 must be equivalent to x0=1. And since one of the axioms on which the system is built is that any value taken zero times must be zero, we know that x0=1 is a false statement for any value of x.

tekromancr··on Webflow – Interactions 2.0
You aren't supposed to click and drag it. You use the css flexbox attributes (see right-hand sidebar) to move it over the goal.
tekromancr··on An ode to pack: gzip’s forgotten decompressor
iirc, it has to do with gstreamer's support for chiptunes in their native format. There is basicly a nes emulator built in.
tekromancr··on MasterCard Ending Signature Requirements
I once had someone at a gas station try to verify my signature against the card. I have always signed things with arbitrary (though lately, consistant) scribbles.

They tried to claim that it couldn't possibly be my card because they didn't match. After a few minutes of back and forth with the cashier I realized that I had already paid for my chips and smokes, so I just grabbed my stuff and left.

It was incredibly frustrating.

tekromancr··on Malicious software libraries found in PyPI posing as well known libraries
I almost never see this. Even on systems that are only running a single python project, I only ever see folks use virtualenv. The only time I ever see things installed with sudo is when the package is being installed in a docker container.

tekromancr··on Interactive Demo of Bloom Filters
Nope, I think you got it. My understanding is that if you want to change the params, you need to rebuild the filter.
tekromancr··on Interactive Demo of Bloom Filters
You are correct.

The filter is completely useless if it is filled with 1s. In this situation, you would just use a larger filter. I am not sure exactly what the ideal size is, it depends on the desired probability of false positives, but an optimally large filter for the data you are using will have some empty bits.

tekromancr··on Launch HN: Lyrebird (YC S17) – Create a digital copy of your voice
Really fun stuff. I noticed that it seems to have problems starting sentences. Especially if I try to start a sentence with "hi,". Interesting nonetheless. This passage seems to be rendered fairly well: https://lyrebird.ai/g/LYoVuaZm
