tehlike··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
I would say google is still in its growth phase, albeit a slower one. Especially with capex spending etc.
tehlike··on We could save petabytes of cache storage with Zstandard and Pingora
Yes. This.
tehlike··on The shrinking landscape of linguistic diversity in the age of LLMs
Eh, not hard to notice some people indeed started to write like LLMs too. Not completely but hints are there.
tehlike··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
The no name yc startup is fine, but the qualifications / proof of extraordinary ability is just non existent.
tehlike··on Muse Spark 1.3
Pretty much. That's even worse imho.
tehlike··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
So even though O-1 is intended for extra ordinary abilities, it's far from one.
tehlike··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
There's a playbook someone on X published (and bragged about it). Borderline fraudulent imho.

So even though O-1 is intended for extra ordinary abilities, it's far from one.

tehlike··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
I exported something like 450GB photos in chunks of 50GB iirc.

Tip: export the takeout to Google drive then download it from there.

Otherwise link downloads have # of times you can retry before they are deleted.

tehlike··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
You can change the split size. But yes.
tehlike··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
Same here. My family photos are a treasure to me.
tehlike··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
Google takeout is pretty good with exporting photos.

small what boards? Do esp32 boards count?
tehlike··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
Reolink poe+frigate
tehlike··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
things are cheap until you reach a scale.
tehlike··on Solving the 1+N Query Problem
This is true but not super true in case of linq and related providers like efcore. Even nhibernate linq would do this.
tehlike··on Asana cleared 5 years of engineering work in 2 weeks with Codex
The more tangible example for me around LLM enabling what's previously long if not impossible tasks: pgrust. https://github.com/malisper/pgrust
tehlike··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
People have incentives to become more powerful - through wealth or in other ways. So unfortunately, authoritarianism tends to have gravity going for it.
tehlike··on Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union
Current administration is strong arming europe in a lot of ways, and it has had impact on how EU Commission handles their own laws at the execution level for DMA, DSA, and probably even GDPR against American companies.

Rumor is that they EU Commission even has to work on the weekends, and it's not a joke.

tehlike··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
They do. But you need to remember.
tehlike··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
This has been a thing for long while, on codex too.

You ask it to do something, then tell it to do something in a different way, then it assumes it needs to do the refactor in a backward compatible way, or creates migrations for it etc.

tehlike··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
Did the same. One issue was the links had some # of retries you can do before they become invalid. Solved it first by exporting them to google drive instead :D
tehlike··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
I use immich too, on my home cluster. I did it as a "backup" to google, in case my account gets flagged by an AI with no immediate recourse.

PS: I used to be an employee, and there was a time i needed an account help for an old account who was clearly definitely mine, and they were of no help. Good for security, terrible if you get flagged.

tehlike··on Reticulum – Decentralized Mesh Network
reticulum don't just propagate over lora. IT can practically propagate over anything it supports (network, lora, bluetooth, etc).
tehlike··on Flock Cameras Can Track Every Car in America. Police Love Them. Citizens Don't
To be specific, I love second amendment, and I stand by it. It just doesn't compute for me that some fellow 2nd amendment lovers are ok with the likes of Flock.
tehlike··on Flock Cameras Can Track Every Car in America. Police Love Them. Citizens Don't
People who support second amendment to stand against government tyranny love to give government power to do tyranny.
tehlike··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
Why do you think they continued to do it?

Ps: I work for meta, but not in AI related orgs.

tehlike··on Online Friends Are Real Friends
Does this come from experience or?

My best friends are friends I made due to my software hobby when I was a child. Hard to find such group concentrated in my proximity at the time.

I still continue to talk and meet with them every once in a while even though we are continents apart.

tehlike··on Online Friends Are Real Friends
As an introvert, my best friends I still talk to today are online friends. We met a few times when I was teenager, but then we moved different places. Online communication still goes on.

He's a lucky guy that has parents that understand him.

tehlike··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
smlights do that! they are great.
tehlike··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good if you ask the right questions
Look at my suggestion to include 40% hedge so that you can buy the lows.

Also look at the chart. It did have 2000 as a terrible time, but if you were hedged you'd be more than fine now.
