tehjoker··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
It’s very typical in human math that explaining the final result after years of searching looks very simple too.
tehjoker··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
What income bracket are you in? I get very few benefits from doing it myself and I have to pay money to a preparer (online or otherwise).

In other countries, you can still do it yourself, you just don't have to do it if it's simple.

tehjoker··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
That particular one is solved in other countries. The tax authority just sends you a bill and you text yes or no. Only people with very complex situations need to file.

They don't do this in this country because (a) it's a political project to make people to sympathize with the rich by feeling their pain (b) it's a great scheme for legalized corruption by creating incentives to build companies around a fake problem.

tehjoker··on Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics
Socialism is about the decentralization of power. In some popular formulations, the economy is run according to a central plan, but in one view, this is democracy. Otherwise, you are at the whim of the rich and tyrannical market forces. With central planning, you get a vote on the general direction of society, which has its possibilities encoded in the material world.

With AI you can see a stark illustration. In America, the government is captured by the rich and the AI companies. They can do whatever they want to you and you have no control. In a worker's government, the government will direct production on behalf of society so you will benefit.

China uses a capitalist mode of production, but imposes strong restrictions and ensures the benefits accrue to the people. That's democracy.

The "authoritarian" propaganda about China is primarily sermonizing against people being able to being able to choose a direction to go in. Instead, the rich are supposed to be able to do whatever they want to whomever they want. That's the American dream.

tehjoker··on Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics
Right, the whole idea of these labs is to install themselves as capitalist philosopher kings. They won't tolerate any ideas of "decentralization" despite it benefiting 99% of humans.

OpenAI was started because Elon and Sam thought Demis was going to make himself dictator and they wanted a piece of that action (reading between the lines). All the labs, even Anthropic have the same idea dressed in different marketing gloss. The major exception (I imagine) are Chinese labs, since the Communist Party of China will demand control over these labs and their models. Good! Democratic human control is a good thing. Certainly, there is more democracy in China than in America. That's the idea of socialism, democracy for the workers, not for the capitalists (we do the inverse).

tehjoker··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
It's sour crude that requires special infrastructure that our oil companies don't even want to bother investing in. They told Trump as much, he still kidnapped President Maduro, who is as far as I know, still in New York City.
tehjoker··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
I heard John Mearshimer say on a podcast that ~230k barrels, you can't go lower without damaging the caverns the oil is stored in, so we're pretty close to it being over.

tehjoker··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
I can't imagine it is cheap to get EUV machines these days. Maybe they don't want to get into a bidding war with America and Taiwan and are waiting for things to cool down?
tehjoker··on Best LLM for every budget, updated daily
What do you mean by "local electricity consumption is something else"? Doesn't an M3 Pro for example draw about as much power as a bright incandescent lightbulb for a maxed out gpu workload (~100W)? That's less than a tenth of what a frontier model will use in the datacenter (which I believe are racks of BlackWell or Vera Lynn GPUs, each using 500W+).
tehjoker··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
What business does America have in Taiwan? It makes no sense.
tehjoker··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
Only China has the GDP to replace USA. So while the answer isn't written in stone, it looks like it'll be China, or since China favors UN governance, maybe we'll move to an old discarded idea (because it didn't serve American interests) like an international currency system that Keynes favored.

Recall that America is currently attacking Iran without provocation and is aiding a genocide.

tehjoker··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
The attack did not come from inside the government alone. It was for example, capital flight. The rich attempted to starve the French economy to win concessions and they won them.

People that control the government in principle control the guns. People that control the economy hold the real levers of power. You can in principle use guns to get control of the economy, though in practice it is trickier. America has done it on many occasions though, blasting apart democratic governments in South and Central America to install neoliberal puppets.

This clarification is a goal of DSA members. Elected officials should use their position oppositionally and to tell the truth about our system. For example reading government secrets into the public record, telling the public the truth about who is steering various debates in Washington, promoting the nationalization of companies and formation of cooperatives.

Mamdani did do something interesting in this vein recently. When the racists on the right said he couldn't go to a 9/11 memorial, he released documents showing they allowed people to be poisoned in 2001.

tehjoker··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I imagine this will become one kind of branch of mathematics.
tehjoker··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
Building labor unions is more valuable than voting. I think you should still vote, but understand voting without leverage will result in your candidate bending the knee. An example is Mamdani being elected in NYC, but allowing a known class enemy to run the police.
tehjoker··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
Mitterrand did attempt to do the things his voters wanted. He was constrained by capitalists who punished him mercilessly until he bent the knee. Allende was simply couped and assassinated.

Voting changes things when those changes do not substantially threaten elites and they can come to some kind of acceptable deal, or when you have sufficient leverage that when your guy gets in they can steamroll the capitalists.

Leverage isn't "votes", that's just a preference on a piece of paper. Leverage is the ability to materially change reality to reward or punish actions. A strike, granting or witholding financial resources, shutting down infrastructure, armed revolt, etc.

tehjoker··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
Voting only changes things when it doesn’t threaten the interests of elites or there is a sufficient counterweight in terms of a competitor nation or a radical labor movement or an uncontrolled armed insurgency.

See salvador allende in chile and mitternand in france for examples of voting without sufficient leverage.

your regan example occurred during a successful counterattack by capital that started under carter and crushed the labor movement.

tehjoker··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
I think that’s very reasonable but the ai companies are intentionally training them to work on harder and harder problems just beyond their capability. So if they do that, they’ll give up too easily.

Do a breakthrough, make no mistakes

tehjoker··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
If a human doesn't understand the proof, it might be useful for certain kinds of engineering, but not really that useful for mathematics except as an existence test.

This is not entirely true, you are costing them in the short run, but are growing your dependence on their product and feeding them training data.

Their goal is to create AGI and replace humans with something resembling the plot of Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel but more extreme.

It’s deeper than that, the people running these companies have their goal as human extinction due to a quasi religious mania (TESCREAL).

tehjoker··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
very interesting perspective, i remember reading thyucledies and he complains about how historians before him would report the first tale they heard, by comparison he worked dilligently to confirm his history (though since he was inventing this process his standards were not quite modern, meaning he didn't rely as much on documentary evidence, and he had a penchant for writing speeches down when it is impossible they are word for word what someone said).
