teh64··on Homebrew 7.0.0
I switched from brew to macports, and I have not experienced the first problem at all. In fact, I had more problems with brew, where some package needed to be updated that I did not want, and I caused a cascade of issues.

The second has also never happened to me. macports installs the packages into a separate prefix, and you just add that to the path, so I wonder how it could bork irretrievably.

Regarding instructions: for most packages, I found that just replacing `brew` with `sudo port` is enough, as most ports are available. And quite a few install instructions mention homebrew together with macports. I have not run into missing packages, but sometimes the ones that existed were a little out of date.

teh64··on Go 1.27 Interactive Tour
In ocaml (and I assume SML) it helps that the generic types have a `'` before them, so

    val map : ('a Box) -> ('a -> 'b) -> 'b Box
teh64··on Go 1.27 Interactive Tour
I think naming conventions might help:

    (b Box[InType]) Map[OutType any](transformFunction func(InType) OutType) Box[OutType]
Same in Python:

    def map[U](self, f: Callable[[T], U]) -> Box[U]
vs

    def map[OutType](self, transform_function: Callable[[InType], OutType]) -> Box[OutType]
and Java:

    public <OutType> Box<OutType> map(Function<InType, OutType> transformFunction)
vs.

    public <U> Box<U> map(Function<T, U> f)
teh64··on Europe's fires are just the start
Well climate change is happening whether wealthy people are hypocrites or not. Also there a lot of people in very poor countries (india, south east asia, africa) that are already feeling the effects and need to worry about it a lot.

I would actually say rich people can afford the most to not worry about climate change, because they can stave off the effects better than poor people (moving to colder climates, building cooling systems, or fleeing to mars [1])

teh64··on A Special Wireless-Free Nikon Camera Is Publicly Available for the First Time
I somehow assumed Nikon did it to all their cameras, but it as far as I can tell it only to holds true for DSLRs and mirrorless.

Sorry to disappoint :(

“special version for the first time”. Your nikons that are wireless free don’t have a version you can buy with builtin wireless.
teh64··on A Special Wireless-Free Nikon Camera Is Publicly Available for the First Time
The Snapbridge app is still not great, but in 2019 Nikon released a firmware update for older cameras, so you can use other apps, such as cascable: https://lrtimelapse.com/news/free-wifi-nikon-firmware-update...

The newer Nikon cameras dont require snapbridge for using wifi.

teh64··on A Special Wireless-Free Nikon Camera Is Publicly Available for the First Time
Well Nikon has a GPS module (Nikon GP-1, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_GP-1) for the hotshoe that does work, so I dont think that is the issue. Also at least on my D850, turning off the camera does not turn off the bluetooth automatically, and it can sync photos to the smartphone while the camera is off, so depending on how much power GPS would use, it could be possible to have it run in the background. And turning it off keeps some things running anyway, like showing the number of photos still available, so coordinates could be saved for a little while after turning off.

teh64··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Well Allard does not see nationality and ethnicity how you believe it. One line further in wikipedia: "In a podcast segment about immigration and deportations Allard stated his opinion and said that "They will also be forced to leave, even if they are born in Sweden, because they have no natural connection to Sweden. They are not Swedish.""

Also Swedes are an ethnicity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedes

teh64··on LaTeX.wasm: LaTeX Engines in Browsers
It is not 3 compiles of the same code after another, but e.g. latex, bibtex, latex, with each step creating part of the final output. I imagine latex like part of multi-pass compiler, so calling latex once is like running only one stage of the compiler. Latexmk (https://www.ctan.org/pkg/latexmk) solves this problem more elegantly by knowing how often each tool and in what order is required.
teh64··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
This is the definition from wikipedia: "Ethnic cleansing is the systematic forced removal of ethnic, racial, or religious groups from a given area, with the intent of making the society ethnically homogeneous."

How does what Allard said not fit this definition?

teh64··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
1. What if you hit a barrier? They are literally designed so that a person behind the barrier does not get hit, but normally they are lower than the car, so you would still hit them.

2. Proving my point that it is not a victimless crime.

3. What is this lower hanging fruit? Putting on a seatbelt seems very simple.

4. No, this is not your body as a projectile hitting someone, but you being unrestrained prevents you from staying seated and so can't brake or steer effectively. This can even happen even when do not hit something, but just hydroplane or skid.

Also their anti-trans stance.

And any party that is pro-monarchy could not reasonably be described as left wing.

teh64··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
This is why the libertarian argument does not make sense to me.

You crashing without a seatbelt and dying harms others as well:

1. Your body as a projectile could harm others.

2. The emotional harm of others seeing your dead body and the horrific injuries. Also the emotional harm on your friends and family.

3. The increase to my taxes and healthcare costs because people have to deal with your dead body. Also, if you almost die when going through the windshield, the costs are much greater trying to save your life than if you wore a seatbelt, as the injuries will be greater and could require things like air ambulances etc...

4. Your body being unrestrained means that your car can cause way more damage, including hitting other cars or pedestrians and injuring and killing them.

It is not a victimless crime.

teh64··on Anthropic invests $1.5M in the Python Software Foundation
Thanks for the correction!
teh64··on Anthropic invests $1.5M in the Python Software Foundation
I have looked at 2018-2016, where the expenses are almost completely the main pycon and more local pycons. Also sponserships like "Pallets group, which maintains projects such as Flask and Jinja" (2018). Everything other than the main pycon is less than 1 million dollars combined in expenses.

I feel it is important to look at the facts, not just vibes.

teh64··on Anthropic invests $1.5M in the Python Software Foundation
In 2019 [0] they only had 2.5 million of total expenses, of which 75% was pycon. So even if everything else was on "outreach" (it was not), that would only be $642,500, which is not "several million a year".

In 2020 [1] 48.1% went to "Packaging Work Group/Infrastructure/Other" (I assume because in person pycon was canceled).

I also checked 2021 [2], which was 32.7% pycon and 31.2% pip etc...

Also 2022 [3], 57.8% pycon, 26.6% Packaging Work Group...

In 2023 [4], 60.5% pycon, and Packaging Work Group expenses decreased to 9.6% because of fastly now provides the bandwidth/hosting: "We are grateful to Fastly for making the online services that the PSF provides possible, so that we can invest time and resources into advancing our infrastructure to better meet community wants and needs."

So your assertion seems to have never been true.

Where are you getting these numbers? Looking at the PSFs Report for 2024 [0], 50% of their expenses went to pycon. Would you consider that outreach? I believe conferences are very important as part of the health of a language, and reading the definition of outreach[1], I would not classify the conference as that. The second highest amount of expenses (27.1%) went to (surprise!) "Packaging Work Group/Infrastructure/Other", i.e. pypi, pip etc... "Outreach & Education" was only 2.8% of 12.9% of expenses, i.e. 0.3612%, which is $17846 (actual dollars, not thousands like in the report.)

teh64··on The UK is shaping a future of precrime and dissent management (2025)
If we go by the explanation from wikipedia [0], Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage would not be considered English, as their families are not part of the English or Celtic ethnic groups. Their ancestors are Turkish and German who came to the UK after 1850. Do you believe they are not English? I mean even the current King of the UK would not be considered English by your definition! He is descended from Greek, Danish and German people [1].
