teeray··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
> I personally believe at the very least the water usage is heavily overblown compared to the agriculture industry.

Apples and oranges comparison. We eat the direct products of water usage in the agriculture industry. It keeps people alive. It’s fallacious to compare that with water usage that goes to serving ads.

teeray··on AI is deciding whether or not people receive medical care
“Your honor, it is impossible to say why the sentient D20 chose to roll <5 for this patient. It is omniscient, and has been weighted carefully by our alchemists to produce decisions as cold and impersonally as the best of our insurance drones.”

Where are the felony charges? This is an insult to everyone that has ever been prosecuted under the CFAA?
teeray··on What will our economic future look like?
> makes medical care cheaper for patients

I think you misspelled “increases profit margins for hospitals” if you’re talking about US healthcare.

teeray··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Just wait until it gets its hands on a shady biolab just outside of oversight. “Claude, make me Captain Tripps”
teeray··on There's No Limit to How Bad Code Can Get
“Yeah, you’re right, but let’s do that refactor in a separate PR” and it never happens
teeray··on The Nerd Reich wants to 'destroy' democracy, and it's mask has slipped
> Whatever you believe or values you have, what your congressmen, senators and president do, is a choice.

It’s not really. Elected leaders gleefully ignore their electorate and get repeatedly re-elected. You can write letters to them, and they just write back “lol no”. The citizenry have very little ability to direct or reclaim the power that they are legally forced to delegate.

teeray··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
This is why these companies paying subscriptions shoveling everything into Claude thinking "oh, they're not training on our stuff" is hilarious to me. Of course they are. They probably are extra super-duper sure not to have Claude admit to that in any way, but there's no way they're giving up training on the sum total of both open and closed source code out there.
teeray··on EFF to Courts: Don't Rewrite Copyright over AI Hype
I think the asymmetry of fair use is what feels the most wrong about copyright and AI. Forever, fair use has been limited with an iron fist: you can’t rip that DVD because it’s copy-protected; You can only use 10s of that song in your school project. Then these AI companies wield fair use like a sledgehammer in a way that nobody has been able to for decades to enormously profit. Maybe it’s technically correct, but it feels like mass exploitation of a loophole that the legal system has previously taken a dim view towards (see: Aereo).
teeray··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
> Good luck finding a pilot trained on doing this

Not necessary. ICBMs have been able to do this autonomously for a very long time [0]

Some of my favorite content are those that are like “hey, there’s no magic here.” See also: all of Ben Eater’s videos.
teeray··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
My first Ethernet cable was a crossover cable I used to link my original Xbox with my friend’s. We’d haul another tube TV down to the basement and LAN party all night.

That was done pre-LLMs as well, so we’re status quo.

teeray··on Google Maps changed to show Lake Ontario as Lake America
> This isn't really on Google

Yes, because it’s so agonizingly difficult to `s/Lake America/Lake Ontario/g` in a data feed. Truly the engineering feat of our time.

teeray··on Google Maps changed to show Lake Ontario as Lake America
While true, that charitable interpretation of this renaming is not appropriate to apply here.
teeray··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Well certainly, no one thing is impervious. But if you have GPS, LORAN, VORs, NDBs, astronavigation, etc. you have many more options at your disposal and present a much more complex attack target.
teeray··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
I saw some rumblings (can't find an article) that there's interest in restarting LORAN to provide an alternative to GPS for this reason.
teeray··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
I always find the “personal responsibility” take hilarious against at-will employment and the usual course of turnover. What is your recourse when you uncover a liar? You can page the responsible party at 3am when their vibe-coded slop breaks prod, and you can fire them when they can’t fix it. Prod is still broken. You still don’t understand the code. At the end of the day, once you hit the merge button, the team is responsible for the code no matter what. You should treat the original author’s presence as a courtesy.

teeray··on EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws
You forgot the part where they finance this all with a never-ending pile of circular IOUs.
teeray··on My Business Is Dying
> AI chat bots can convert PDF to Excel files, but they’re slower and more expensive. I have a feeling a lot of users are using free tier AI chatbots to do their conversions.

I’ve considered this, but gosh does it make me nervous to potentially put that info into training sets. Instead I’ve left that task to local LLMs.

teeray··on 507 Mechanical Movements
If you get a chance to visit the Museum of Science in Boston, one of my favorite exhibits there is a living version of a whole bunch of these that appeared at a World’s Fair. Some of them are quite clever.

> the process of "testing" was careless.

Let’s not mince words. The process was criminal. It’s a gross miscarriage of justice that the CFAA isn’t being thrown at them.
