teekert··on Plan mode is dead
Fascinating piece, puts in words what I've been feeling for a while..

Over time I found some useful patterns (indeed after not getting what I want from plan mode), but this piece convinced me to double down on them and always try to find (and let the LLM construct) clarifying abstractions that have a deterministic relation to the code.

2 examples I recently build while I'm developing a large Django system with a complex datamodel and RBAC (spending quite some time to make it look good):

A script that makes an svg of my data model with all the classes/tables laid out and their relations encoded in the line ends (1 to 1, many to 1, many to many) and their on_delete relations encoded in colors. This also helps me discuss with stakeholders. The visual is also in the README.

For the RBAC model I decided it should be declarative so a TOML in the code that seeds the DB with the roles. I quickly landed on small script that translates the TOML to a markdown table with roles as columns and perms as row. It's also in the README.

After reading this piece I'm going to actively think how I can build these visualization more often and consciously, on different levels. Great realization.

teekert··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
That's the nice part, as an admin you are familiar with the complexity and use it for good. As a user, you never have to see it. (And you can even have some freedom for installing apps using flatpack/snap if needed.)

How would you role out the same config to thousands of Arch systems? Sure Valve does it, but I still think that is a "bolted on top" solution. Bootc could be another option though, but Nix solves reproducibility more elegantly, imho. Nix went back and asked "how can this be done better", where many modern solutions took what was already there.

It may be more a measure against explosive growth than being anti-AI in principle.

teekert··on Goodbye Google
This person is putting his money where his mouth is, so his views are infinitely more valuable to me than those of unsubstantiated naysayers, is there a place to read their views in depth? I couldn't help but notice a religious angle to his blog. So curious how that weaves in. I hope there will be some arguments more rationalist in nature in his writing, there often are with these highly intelligent religious people imho.
teekert··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
He's specifically bending down to look at the behinds of the persons, also asks them to turn around "scanning" them.

If anything I think the employees are all nice people. I get the message but it's cringy to watch.

I'm also against cameras everywhere, but let's not pretend this is not all also possible with other devices.

Of course, Meta taking this down but not a lot of other, completely the same, stuff is the bad thing.

teekert··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
It was lunacy business-wise but it sure brought some color to the market and I really liked seeing what they came up with. It wasn't for me, and not for most people, of course. But now we all have a black glass slab. Does make me a bit sad and am always eyeballing new form-factors (ie cyberdeck like). Idk, it's how capitalism works, but perhaps one day technology will find a way to be more flexible and we can bring back some lunacy...
teekert··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
Well, that aged differently, on different fronts...

All set aside, I did always wonder, why the screen has to fold (be flexible), surely a very thin line between 2 hard screens is very workable, perhaps it is even possible to make it (almost) invisible with some optical tricks at the touching edges.

Another point: It is easy to think of such things, it's the manufacturing and specifically manufacturing at scale that is the real work. That's why I think patents can really hold us back, by blocking the market from trying stuff because a company made some nice drawings (coming from a guy that was in a company that wanted to "blanket some markets" with patents). Perhaps we could have had our flying cars ;)

Btw, that last slide is very much like the communicator from Earth: Final Conflict [0], but then again, what can you make with a rolling screen?

teekert··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
Oh this is nice. I've fallen into the habit of ignoring /devtools and put any input for agents there,I mount it in the agent container and have it put it's auth and memory there, and plans. And a "start agent container"-script, because people have their own preferences when it comes to agents.
teekert··on Claude Code reads AGENTS.md only when telemetry is on [fixed]
Uhm I turned off everything there is to turn off in my Pro plan, and Claude just read my agents.md with no issue? So... What telemetry am I missing? Or did they JUST update? (I updated my docker image 40 minutes ago to get Opus 5.5, am on version 2.1.280, so not the mentioned 2.1.277, so it's fixed?)
teekert··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I got a Pixel 10, installed GrapheneOS. Then Google Play (which is sandboxed). I have 99,9% of all apps and a barebones launcher and some barebones fossify apps. Its pretty good, ugly if you let it but not bad

teekert··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I went to Apple to de-Google, 5 years in and I just went to GrapheneOS to de-Apple (and re-Google just a bit too much for comfort but ok).

The Appstore is a cesspool, and now these "ads".

Why does it always happen? I bought Hue Lighting some years ago. It was all lean and nice, and now when open the app I almost always get an ad for some new light they want to sell me. So dirty, so cheap. Is it all just a race to the bottom? I just avoid the app and use Home Assistant now (when there is no button, because I also avoid using my Phone to control the house).

I'm on my Linux laptop now, being productive. It's so clean. Really still love it as much as ever, thanx for staying the same, and clean, and respecting me. I forgive you the horrible battery time ;)

teekert··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
I started de-googling a long time ago, part of it was an iPhone (12 mini), 5 years later I really felt like de-Appling as well. The Appstore is a cesspool, privacy concerns are about the same as Google now (or perhaps always were?).

I went with GrapheneOS. Very good experience, but not without Google Play (store and services). It's all sandboxed, so presumably I'm only leaking consciously chosen data. It's really aimed at security, not so much de-googling. Something like Murena's /e/OS is much more aimed at de-Googling, but as GrapheneOS devs will usually be quick to point out here, they are "quite poor" with their security.

A de-Googled functional appstore on a FairPhone (+ with all the GrapheneOS required security bells and wistles) would be ideal for me. But it's still either optimal security focussed OR de-Googling/de-big-teching focused. Yes there is f-droid, but there are too many apps that require the Google services (like banking).

Atm 1 app does not work, one of my banking apps required the highest tier of Google control. I will happily install on devices that have been years without security updates though :s

Overall the GrapheneOS experience (base launcher etc) is very clean, fast, minimal, ad free.

teekert··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
FWIW, I installed it on the Stable channel yesterday. It's impressive given the situation.

Will be somewhere in 2027 afaik.

Thats a long time for a critical security patch to land (like this one [0], although it looks like it has been fixed now, at least in their alpha channel, which is annoying (not their fault) because we really need this patch).

The rattling is because of the security patches of course.

Installed GrapheneOS on my Pixel 10 yesterday, only used the stock rom to start the installer... Am feeling a little unconfortable due to this situation: [0]. Hope this gets better. Really feeling the dislike for Google on this one.

teekert··on Google illegally retains customer data, and I am taking legal action against them
"But Google got caught precisely because of their own file‑restore robot, and this is my technical checkmate against them:"

Claudish (but not all of the text seems to be). Idk, I read this all day and am getting allergic to it. It's always the load-bearing decision worth my thought, and then some contradiction. It's not just this, it's THIS and THIS.

I've been using some GLM5.2 via Mistral lately and it doesn't have this... tone... But it makes some mistakes sometimes that Claude wouldn't.

Idk, just the idea that this was artificial expanded, makes me feel anyone could have written it, I could ask Claude for it directly. There will be no insight, even though there may be. What is happening to me, I am not anti AI.

teekert··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
Yeah I lost my phone some months ago. Quite the panick because I am also MS365 admin for 2 orgs... 3 hr later a trucker called my wife using the iPhone emergency contact feature (what a hero). Now I bought an iPad that stays at home and has all the apps. Honestly, I should also put a second phone somewhere else.

Also frees me up to experiment a bit more on the Phone side (just got a Pixel 10 with GrapheneOS), although, so far it all just works (with Google Services of course).

It's annoying that you really do need either Android or iOS nowadays. If only we could virtualize one of those platforms properly (and free as in freedomly).

Sounds like a natural addition to Agentmail [0]

In general I'd like more services to maintain a wall between me and agent, but then again, we can also let the agents build it.
