SEEKING WORK | Europe | Remote

Jack of all trades - full stack but happiest at the back-end. Hands-on product and project management experience give me an edge in getting the big picture fast. I will grok your idea quickly and be your reliable partner from inception to deployment and beyond.

Favorite stack: .NET, then Node.js (Typescript rules!), PHP (Laravel is pretty awesome). Often MongoDB but prefer SQL wherever possible.

Mindset: object-oriented but infected with the functional virus. Hate procedural programming.

Industry exposure: finance, telecoms, insurance. Most of my engagements recently are centered around helping Fortune 500-sized companies navigate the new digital landscape.

Availability: prefer flat-price projects with fixed scope. You can be located anywhere but some timezone overlap is desirable.

Working mode: remote, happy to meet for the initial kick-off and planning.

My partner is an inspirational designer and a wonderful human being. If you need code AND design, you'll get a 2-in-1 deal.

teekay··on Ask HN: How do I stay motivated to learn?
What motivates you is unique to you.

Find the reason to care.

Sometimes, curiosity itself is motivating enough.

For me, it comes and goes and I find it difficult to get out of the "dips". I hate them. As I grow older, I don't want to be too comfortable in my ways and scornfully ignorant of new things and ideas.

Recently, I started a blog with the goal to eventually get to one post per day. Imposing this discipline upon myself, I then have to learn stuff to write about it.

And, as I write about it and find out how trite and basic my understanding is, it shames me into learning more.

That is only my path, however, and finding yours is on you.

Good luck!

Great article. Brings back many good memories.

I blog about tango music, which probably won't be of any interest to this crowd. https://tomaskohl.com/tango.

Planning to start a more techy blog, and looking at static code generators. Too many of them! :)

teekay··on Ask HN: What languages / environments to build desktop apps in 2014?
I would love to be able to support Linux and Mac but am not willing to dig into C++ / Qt or similar alternatives. It's a hobby project, which I should have mentioned previously, not a commercial work.

C# is great and WPF/XAML is OK; I can't really make any profound comments as I've only done web development previously and am not familiar with any other desktop technologies.

With regards to HTML5/Javascript superseding WPF in the future, I am not convinced - Microsoft should shed some light on their plans in the near future (the Build conference is in April I think) so we'll see.

teekay··on Ask HN: What languages / environments to build desktop apps in 2014?
I was in a similar situation, having an idea for a desktop app, and I dove straight into .NET / WPF on Windows.

My reasons were that a) there are great many Windows computers around and people still use them, b) .NET and WPF are mature and documentation is available on MSDN / StackOverflow.

With Windows 8 around, however, I am also looking at WinRT and will most likely dabble in that, too.

teekay··on Ask HN: Going back to programming
This is an interesting point of view. That kind of role would make my transition easier, if it exists - obviously I have to put in the work of finding it.

Actually when I started PHP3 was a hot new thing :-)
