techplex··on Ask HN: Who is the inspiration for your thinking?
My dad — for curiosity and creativity, and for teaching me to go after what I want rather than assuming something can't be done.

Bryan Cantrill — for shaping how I think about building productive engineering teams, especially teams working at the messy and fascinating interface between hardware and software.

Alan Kay and Seymour Papert — for changing how I think about computers, education, and learning. The best tools don't just give people answers; they give people an environment where they can explore, experiment, and develop their own understanding.

Paul Akers, Norm O'Hara, and Ryan Tierney — for showing what Lean can look like when it leaves the PowerPoint deck and actually reaches the manufacturing floor. Continuous improvement works when the people doing the work are empowered to see problems and improve the systems around them.

Linus Torvalds — for the relentless pursuit of technical quality and the willingness to challenge decisions when the engineering isn't good enough.

Looking at the list, I realized there's a common thread.

Be curious. Build things. Learn by doing. Give people the tools and agency to improve their own work. Don't accept "that's just how we do it" as an answer. And when you want something, be willing to go after it.

I suspect I'm still figuring out how much each of these people has influenced the way I think.

techplex··on When Will We Learn?
The approach deno is taking is very interesting where all packages are sandboxed. I'd be interested to hear the author's thoughts on Deno's approach as a mitigation for supply chain attacks. I understand it won't stop all attacks but it would make them significantly harder. ref: https://medium.com/deno-the-complete-reference/sandboxing-in...

techplex··on Automatically publishing your build artifacts
I often "publish" artifacts internally in github actions with the actions/upload-artifact action. https://github.com/actions/upload-artifact

//.github/workflows/main.yml

  name: Main

  on:
    push:
      branches: [ main ]
    pull_request:
      branches: [ main ]

  jobs:

    build:
      runs-on: self-hosted
      steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v2

      - name: Set up Go
        uses: actions/setup-go@v2
        with:
          go-version: 1.16

      - name: Test
        run: go test -v ./...

      - name: Build Discover Command
run: go build -o discover cmd/discover/main.go

      - name: Upload Build Artifacts
        uses: actions/upload-artifact@v2
        with:
          name: discover
          path: discover

For internal tooling we often publish tagged artifacts to releases on the repo using a workflow that is triggered when someone creates a release. The creation of the release makes a new tag and triggers the build.

//.github/workflows/release.yml

  name: Release

  on:
    release:
      types:
        - published

  jobs:
    build:
      runs-on: self-hosted
      env:
        GOPRIVATE: "github.com/OUR-ORG-NAME/\*"
        NAME: deploy-${{ github.event.release.tag_name }}-${{ matrix.GOOS }}-${{ matrix.GOARCH }}${{ matrix.EXTENSION }}
      strategy:
        matrix:
GOOS: [ windows, linux, darwin ]
          GOARCH: [ amd64, 386 ]
          exclude:
            # excludes 32bit on macOS
            - GOOS: darwin
              GOARCH: 386
          include:
            # includes a new variable for windows builds
            - GOOS: windows
              EXTENSION: ".exe"
      steps:
        # Runs a single command using the runners shell
        - name: Print Info
          run: echo '${{ toJSON(github.event.release) }}'

        - uses: actions/checkout@v2

        - name: Set up Go
          uses: actions/setup-go@v2
          with:
            go-version: 1.16
