techntoke··on Gmail, Contacts, Assistant and Messages apps no longer support sending money
When you send money using Google Pay you still select an email address or phone number to send it to, and they get an email if that is what you select letting you know and you get one saying you sent money.
techntoke··on Gmail, Contacts, Assistant and Messages apps no longer support sending money
How do people depend on sending money with Gmail when you can send it in the browser or app? What is the problem?
techntoke··on Gmail, Contacts, Assistant and Messages apps no longer support sending money
So what if it is cancelled one day? You lose like a few minutes of your time and then complain that no one else offers something as good?

Google has a lot of opt out controls to prevent personalized advertising. Other services are doing a lot worse. Google Pay is instant when using a debit/credit card and has great support. Setup is a breeze so even if it is canceled one day, which there is no indication of it happening soon, you really aren't losing anything.

It is scary that you're getting downvoted. I guess the thumbs down crowd really wants the web browser to do everything.
techntoke··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
Yes it is pretty difficult, and like I said they limit what phone numbers you can use. It ends up costing more money than just paying for additional storage.
techntoke··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
Again, did you try the shortcut listed here?

https://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/52093/see-all-sh...

When I search to:email@here.com it shows all the documents shared with that person, then I can Ctrl+a and click "share" and remove that person from all of them at once.

I use one-way Syncthing, so my phone automatically backups my pictures to Google Photos (using the Google Photos app) and my computer (using Syncthing). Then I copy them into a folder locally like they existed previously on Google Drive by year.

Then I run rclone sync:

  rclone sync --dry-run gphotos:media/by-year /local/storage/path
Then if I delete some pictures from Google Photos, the same sync command will delete them from my local backup.

Have you tried opening a dummy account lately on Google? You typically need a phone number to verify, and not some VOIP number but a major carrier. That is a lot of effort for 15GB of extra data, when you can just pay $12/mo for unlimited with G Suite.

I'm not sure if you've seen this or not?

Generally, you would disable an account to revoke sharing. Are you sharing these outside your domain? That could be part of the problem. I agree there should be an easier way to remove sharing for everything for a particular user (and there may be). Have you checked out GAM?

techntoke··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
It isn't impossible, just not convenient like it used to be. What I do is sync a copy to my backup device, and use the web interface to download any collages or effects that it auto-generates.

You can then use rclone to sync deletions, which uses their API.

techntoke··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
How so? someone has to share the files first and there is a quota on the amount of times a shared file can be accessed.

I agree Terraform isn't great for installing software. Cloud-init works but it can be cumbersome. If that is your major pain point though then I'd look into EKS and using Kubernetes to manage and install software. There is a CLI tool called eksctl that makes setting up an EKS instance a breeze. I don't know all the intricacies with AWS, but with Google Cloud you can setup a single node "cluster".

If you're already planning on standing up at least 3 compute instances though, might as well run EKS in a cluster.

You mean like Terraform?

Ansible user Jinja templating. Might as well say Jinja + Jinja + Helm.

Helm uses Go templates which are awesome. It is what Hugo is built off. The main issue is that you still have to manage indentation with Helm. YAML is easier to read than JSON and TOML. If you don't like it, then what do you suggest is better?

Thanks.

Sweet. I got it working but haven't automated it yet. I'll try to share a link eventually.

Thanks! It looks like the novnc package is in testing, not main:

http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/edge/testing

Please note I did oversimplify this a bit. You'll still need something like WayVNC, but it doesn't have WebSocket support yet. You can track it here:

https://github.com/any1/neatvnc/issues/2

In the meantime, you should be able to use websockify (there is an alpine package already).

For a simple app, I'd recommend cage which is a kiosk wayland WM for a single app:

https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/edge/community/x86_64/c...

Here is an example for Sway that you could use for Cage as well:

Here is an open source way to do this yourself:

  # Dockerfile

  FROM node:alpine3.12
RUN apk add --no-cache chromium \
  && yarn add puppeteer-core \
  && apk add \
    --no-cache \
    --repository http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/edge/testing \
      novnc
techntoke··on Digikam 7.0: Open-source photo management
I'm currently using Google Photos for facial recognition, however since they broke their Google Drive integration I'd like to move away from it. For now I am using a combination of Syncthing, the Google Photos interface and rclone.

Is there an API or potential to use this in headless for integration in other apps such as web or Android? What about the automated cards and animations that Google Photos creates? Is there anything like that for Digikam or another app that can be self-hosted?

I don't have to pay as long as I use my bank's ATM. The only place that you need cash any more is the marijuana dispensary.
techntoke··on Show HN: TinyPilot – Build a KVM over IP using a Raspberry Pi
My guess is that switch simply doesn't support 144Hz, so if it works at 60Hz then you have your answer.
techntoke··on Buy on Google is now open and commission-free
No, I don't. How long ago was that? I hear that credit unions don't charge for other credit unions ATMs.

When will we stop being fooled by Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Tesla, etc?

Nothing can be worse than the JavaScript monster we have today
techntoke··on Show HN: TinyPilot – Build a KVM over IP using a Raspberry Pi
Have you tried lowering to 60Hz in Windows to see if it helps? What about another switch?

Pass and Browserpass or gopass bridge. There is also QtPass and Password Store for Android. Love having my passwords synced using Git and backed up encrypted in the cloud using GPG.
techntoke··on Towards native security defenses for the web ecosystem
> It's not a good idea. The Chrome sandbox is arguably a lot stronger than Apparmor/ Seccomp. A native program in Apparmor or SELinux can still make virtually arbitrary system calls, whereas an attacker who has compromised a Javascript renderer can not. Further, The attacker would have to own the renderer first, whereas you're talking about just giving native execution rights. Further than that, you can just Apparmor/seccomp chrome? So just go do that? I've done it myself.

In a container sandbox platform, you could still define the permissions that must be granted for a site. Like, this program wants to access your camera, should you let it? Or, it wants to access a directory. That isn't much different than a browser today.

techntoke··on Towards native security defenses for the web ecosystem
Java not running in the browser is still a disaster. Python and Go would be awesome.
techntoke··on Towards native security defenses for the web ecosystem
Yes, not only would it allow support for other programming languages but it would be orders of magnitude faster than JavaScript. I agree with pretty much everything you said.
