technotarek··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
Love this idea.

“ Google should be prevented from having their own WWW crawler too. The crawler should be made into it's own company and data should be purchased by Google and any other company that want to purchase it at the same costs.”

I know someone working on DOJ’s case vs G search, yet I haven’t heard any decent proposals to solve the problem. This is one. Simple and could spark a lot of innovation. (Probably has drawbacks that I haven’t considered yet.)

technotarek··on Why a land-value tax is inevitable
Anecdotally, I’ve been surprised by how Washington DC’s aggressive, punitive taxing of vacant properties has done little (in my observation) to free up these plots. $MM properties that just sit there.
technotarek··on The man who invented the Zamboni
Fond memories here. I was a Zamboni driver from the age of 16 to 19. I was the youngest driver at my local, municipal rink in metro Detroit which had one indoor and one outdoor rink. A pretty good gig that earned me admiration from lots of pint sized aspiring hockey players.

Driving it was fun. It was even more fun when you focused on how fast you could go vs how well the ice was resurfaced. (Did I mention I was 16?!) The mechanics of the machine were also very cool.

technotarek··on IKEA to buy back used furniture in recycling push
Buy vintage. Solid wood cores, from the 50s-70s. That’s as green as you’re gonna get.
technotarek··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
Rewind to 2013: MacBook Air.

More recently, a thermostat with a remote room sensor.

technotarek··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
Seconded. The stick kind with a variety of heads, including a head for hardwood floors. Game changer, at least since having a kid.

technotarek··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
There is nothing unique about tech in this regard. Not saying it shouldn’t be on HN, but it’s a weird spin that adds nothing to the important and very real points of the article otherwise.
technotarek··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
iOS

technotarek··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
Darn. Happened again with Bluetooth enabled. Pretty bad bug Apple. I've had my brand new 2020 MBA for ~4 weeks and this has happened probably 10-15 times now.
technotarek··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
“Sometimes, after resuming from sleep, the laptop doesn't detect its own keyboard. I can assure you, the keyboard was there indeed, and note how the dock is still the default one. This happened to me minutes after setting up the computer for the first time, before I had any chance to install software or change any settings.”

Glad to hear it’s not just me. I think I solved this by re-enabling Bluetooth (2020 MBA). The OP says he hadn’t changed any settings yet though.

technotarek··on Ask HN: Is there a search engine which excludes the world's biggest websites?
Aside from the constraints we apply to market/geography and product type? If that's what you mean, then technically it's a matter of whether the store's ecom platform is compatible with our indexer, which supports ~20 different platforms (and hundreds of variations). Otherwise, we do some light curating for product quality to include, but not limited to, the accuracy of meta data (titling, description) and image quality.
technotarek··on Ask HN: Is there a search engine which excludes the world's biggest websites?
...but only for stores using Shopify as their ecom platform. That misses A LOT of what's out there, probably 75% or more.
technotarek··on Ask HN: Is there a search engine which excludes the world's biggest websites?
ATTIC: A visual search and discovery engine to help you find the latest products from small, unique businesses near you.

https://attic.city/

Currently for three product tiers (furniture, home decor, and fashion/clothing) in 14 major US markets, where stores within ~100 miles or a ~2 hour drive are considered as part of the market.

Disclaimer: I'm one of the founders.

technotarek··on Etsy Collections
Is this Etsy pulling a Netflix ... a step toward them becoming creators?
technotarek··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
Slightly off topic, but has anyone else noticed how simply starting Activity Monitor can bring your CPU and fan under control when they’re raging? True with both my 2013 and brand new 2020 MBA.
technotarek··on Mailvelope
Is there anything like this for non browser based eMail clients like Postbox, mail.app etc?
technotarek··on New iPhone SE
I didn’t buy the SE because it was cheaper. I bought it because it had the best balance between performance and form factor.
technotarek··on Story of the Roku Player (2013)
Original? I had the Roku Sound Bridge. It was purely for music. It hardwired to your stereo and could connect to your iTunes library by WiFi. You controlled it via a remote and the box’s display. When it worked, it was great.

https://images.crutchfieldonline.com/ImageHandler/trim/620/3...

Seems like it should have been part of the origin story, no?

I still have it actually. Someday I’d like to figure out if it’s possible to re-purpose it.

technotarek··on New MacBook Air
That's correct. Not building/re-building the containers constantly. However, the initial build takes forever and some containers tend to crash (e.g., Prisma). Plus, in our case where we're using Angular, the recompiling of the app on change sends the fan into overdrive and I get noticeable lag on application switching. Again, this is on a 2013 MBA, which is almost ridiculous, but I'm that type of person. Still proudly sporting my iPhone SE. My development partner is on the 2019 MBA and has noticed improvement, but albeit rather underwhelming.

As an aside, I haven't taken the time to pin point the exact problem, but as much I prefer to use Firefox, it doesn't seem to do a great job of managing resources for the SPAs we're building.

technotarek··on New MacBook Air
Up until late 2018, my MBA 2013 was doing ok with a stack transitioning to full js/ts. Now it’s close to unusable as our projects build multiple containers, load hundreds of node packages etc. Unfortunately, the 2019 MBA isn’t much better. I’m still wondering whether to hold until a new MBP 13/14”, or give this a try.

technotarek··on The MTA is going after an Etsy artist over a New York subway map it didn’t make
You sure?

"That article also claimed the MTA received $500,000 a year in licensing revenue, a whopping .003 percent of the agency’s 2013 revenue."

Perhaps this isn't from the map, but either way, the logic of my suggestion applies equally to protecting the asset for future monetization as much as current monetization.

technotarek··on The MTA is going after an Etsy artist over a New York subway map it didn’t make
In terms of MTA motivation, aren't they just trying to protect it as an asset to limit its usage and thereby increase its potential value so that they can best monetize it? In this day and age where some spend their days trying to dissemble and neuter government traditional means of raising revenue, I don't necessarily find the approach problematic (putting aside the particulars of this specific case).
technotarek··on The Bath Bubble
Not mentioned, but seems like a relevant consideration: “According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a full bathtub requires about 70 gallons of water, while taking a five-minute shower uses 10 to 25 gallons. You might argue that very few people fill the tub to the top, but a simple calculation shows that either way, baths use more water.”

https://stanfordmag.org/contents/shower-or-bath-essential-an...

technotarek··on The Bath Bubble
As someone about to undertake a master bath renovation, “to bath or not to bath” has been a huge and difficult decision. A soaking tub like the article discusses is less on the radar than a more compact version, and the decision boils down to resale and what a family with kids wants (vs a personal spa amenity). The tub is winning based on informal surveying of opinion from real estate agents, builders and lots of parents. For context, we’re in an urban enviro where space is at a premium. Probably a no brainer in a larger home.
technotarek··on A Week in the Life of a McDonald’s Cashier
I give a lot of credit to my success to my work ethic, which was nurtured by my parents encouraging me to work at a young age. Paper route by 10, then a soccer referee, then a janitor in a public ice arena. It’s amazing what you learn about hard work from cleaning a hockey locker room. The thing is I didn’t even “need” those jobs. The money was largely spent on a massive CD collection (which I eventually sold to buy an early iPod). Still, those jobs have had a tremendous impact on who I am and give me respect for labor of all kinds.
