techie128··on Google cancels TGIF weekly all-hands meetings
Yes Google did make search and mobile more accessible while helping itself to a big pile of money. Stop pretending that they did it out of the goodness of their hearts. Hate to break it to you but Google is just like any other business.
techie128··on Google cancels TGIF weekly all-hands meetings
I think their diversity initiatives failed miserable. They created a monoculture that is violently intolerant of diverse viewpoints.
techie128··on Google cancels TGIF weekly all-hands meetings
Microsoft and Apple employees might care. However, workplace is not an appropriate forum to fight over politics or other non-work related topics. More importantly, it is important to maintain professionalism and focus on the job you've been hired to do. You can be an activist in your spare time. You may also not like your coworkers due to their political views but we live in a diverse world. Acknowledge that and work with them regardless of their political leanings.
techie128··on Uber lays off around 350 more across Eats, self-driving and other departments
The fine print to such management speak is, "...this is the final wave until our bottom line improves". If Uber's financial position doesn't improve, we are guaranteed to see more "waves". Given Uber's current trajectory, I would assume they would end up cutting 30-40% staff over the next couple years. 19K employees for their business is overkill.
techie128··on Review of 737 Max Certification Finds Fault with Boeing and FAA
My consumer confidence in civil aviation is shaken. I think there should be a way to opt out of flying on aircrafts that I deem unsafe. Additionally, airline and travel websites should be required, by law, to display the safety record of the airplane that will fly me. Finally, if the airlines pull a bait and switch at the airport, the airline should be required to put me on a different flight that meets my aircraft criteria.

I respect Apple's style of releasing products. Rather than releasing half-baked crappy product (think Samsung Galaxy Fold), take your time and make a truly remarkable product. First mover advantage is worthless if your product crashes (pun intended).
techie128··on Jtc – CLI tool to extract, manipulate and transform source JSON
It probably should not invent its own language or if it does, it should take inspiration from XPath/JSONPath which is arguably simpler.
techie128··on Google Cloud Worth $225B, Deutsche Bank Says
Unfortunately, this is an opinion by a single analyst. Analysts are frequently wrong about their prediction. I would not put a whole lot of stock in it. Post Kurian, GCP has shown _some_ traction but it still has a long catch up game to play. Google really needs to capitalize on its strengths (ML/AI, BigData) in a major way. In addition it has to spend a major chunk of money in educating first-time developers and making it super easy to migrate into the Google ecosystem. We haven't seen major movement in these directions from GCP, yet. Hope they're coming soon.

Disclaimer: I am long GOOGL.

techie128··on Jsonbox – A HTTP based JSON storage
I don't get it. You're hosting a service that allows users to store JSON for free? Why? Have you thought about what happens to your expenses when potentially hundreds or thousands of people use it?
techie128··on Lenovo Yoga computers have parts that explode
Lenovo seems to have gone down in quality. Their supply chain also doesn’t seem to be doing too well. Orders for a lot of their models are delayed by 6 weeks at least. Those who got deliveries are complaining about poor build quality, DOA and other issues. A glimpse through their forums will give you a good idea of how broken things currently are.
techie128··on Tell HN: Oracle now requires you to login when you try to download JRE
You can completely avoid this by using a package manager - Homebrew on macOS, apt on Debian/Ubuntu, yum on Redhat/CentOS. I don't use Windows but I am sure there should be something similar. You also don't need to use Oracle's distro any more. AdoptOpenJDK is a great alternative.
techie128··on How Men’s Bodies Change When They Become Fathers
The ideas I have presented are not 'armchair science'. They're widely accepted in the field of evolutionary biology.
techie128··on How Men’s Bodies Change When They Become Fathers
I am sure the author means well. However, this makes little sense from an evolutionary standpoint. Although humans have evolved far more than most animals on this planet, the basic idea of evolutionary biology remains the same. In the wild, males have to hunt (provide food), protect the new born(s) and their mate(s) from threats. Therefore having the same level or higher levels of Testosterone is a biological imperative. Testosterone makes the male stronger and more aggressive. Both are very useful traits from an evolutionary standpoint. I cannot imagine human males diverging too much from this basic framework.

Coming to today's workplace, after childbirth there is a drop in productivity of male employees as they adjust to their new reality. However, I have observed men become more diligent and aggressive at their jobs. I only imagine thats because they have a stronger sense of responsibility to provide for their partner & offspring. Whether or not Testosterone levels change is a different matter.

techie128··on Hundreds of extreme self-citing scientists revealed in new database
Not defending people who self-cite but here is an alternative explanation. There are many areas of science that have very few researchers working on the same or related problems. In addition papers tend to build on prior works of the same or related researchers. Over time we may see clusters of what look like "self-cited" papers. This is not abnormal.
techie128··on Show HN: BlobCity DB
Cassandra does not enforce any restrictions on the data format. You could store practically any blob.
techie128··on Show HN: BlobCity DB
“Store unlimited data for free and pay only for what you analyse” - unlimited data for free? Not happening. I would really take that off before someone tries to find out limits of your “unlimited” offering.
techie128··on Insured price $2,758, cash price $521
Having lived in the US for over a decade, I am disappointed with the system. I also notice that nobody in this thread, so far, has talked about liability and the overly litigious aspect of the American society. There are so many lawyers that are willing to file malpractice lawsuits against anybody in the medical industry which also raises costs overall.
techie128··on Insured price $2,758, cash price $521
I am sure you have data to back up your claim that "standards of care, facility costs, and compensation for medical professionals is much lower." Care to post it?
techie128··on Apple suspends Siri response grading in response to privacy concerns
Do low wage, low education workers have poorer morals? They are fighting to make ends meet and could care less about your 1st world problems.
techie128··on India tiger census shows rapid population growth
Do you think Tiger population growth happens overnight? I think successive governments have invested in making sure Tiger population growth is healthy. Read this: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/144540/china-and-in...

Do you think India and China are somehow cooking up green cover to fool NASA's satellites too? Give me a break.

techie128··on Show HN: Ananas – a hackable data tool for beginners
Its called "ananas" in Marathi as well. Marathi is a regional language in India.
techie128··on H-1B: Federal judge backs government’s narrower view of ‘specialty occupation’
You'll notice that this person (Usha Sagarwala) doesn't show up on LinkedIn or has any online presence. That is because most consultancies have a playbook for these H1B employees which includes falsifying their resume and work experience in order to secure not only a visa but also a client. This is not anecdotal but a widespread problem specifically affecting consulting companies (a.k.a body shops). Here's an example where a student on an F-1 (Student) visa was denied entry when CBP determined he had lied: https://www.happyschools.com/h1b-visa-deported-port-entry/ This is a well oiled racket that many people have been running for a while now. Here's an example where feds brought these people down: https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/03/h-1b-fraud-indian-ceo...

There is a lot of fraud in the H1B, EB5 and EB1C visa programs. The administration has tried to crack down on it consistently but the Trump administration has been the most vigorous in its enforcement so far. However, this fraud requires legislative fixes which haven't come in yet. Simple fixes like H1Bs can be used only for direct employees and not for consulting purposes would be a huge boon to American companies. Another fix would be to raise the minimum salary which after 30 years of running the program is still at 65K USD. It will have immediate, positive impact by closing the loopholes used for exploitation.

This sort of fraud is also a big reason why people are stuck in years long backlogs for their employment based greencards.

techie128··on Operating a large distributed system in a reliable way: practices I learned
Interesting. Although it is on the lite side. For example, it doesn't talk about chaos testing, defining effective and comprehensive metrics (KPIs), alert noise or running services like databases in an active-active (hot-hot) mode.
techie128··on Bill to cut per-country green card cap passes House
This is great news for employment based immigration. It makes the system FIFO and helps American workers by reducing the number of people waiting perpetually in line for a GC. This way people stuck in the backlog can move jobs easily and accept promotions which helps avoid depressing wages. This bill also strengthens protections for H1B to reduce fraud.
techie128··on Apple begins exporting India-made iPhones to European markets
India has plenty of water. The problem plaguing South India, specifically Chennai, was anticipated. The central government was fixing it. However it lacked sufficient support from the state government.
techie128··on Apple begins exporting India-made iPhones to European markets
I was citing this as an example of India’s legal system diverging from US.
techie128··on Apple begins exporting India-made iPhones to European markets
I believe India has had a better track record than China as far as IP is concerned. The only concern I would have is India's patent laws are different from the US. Evergreening of drugs has been repeatedly rejected.
techie128··on Apple begins exporting India-made iPhones to European markets
While this is great news for India, it is sort of expected. Chinese mobile companies have been manufacturing in India and produce 80-90% of their phones locally.

There are clear benefits for Apple here. China, as a manufacturing destination, has become less attractive due to rising wages and US-China trade war. Higher wages are good for Chinese people but not great for manufacturing. India is a cheaper destination and the recent government has been very business friendly. India now ranks 77th in the ease of doing business compared to 130th a few years ago. India has heavily invested in building out basic infrastructure like roads and power. It has also cracked down on corruption and a lot of government services have been digitized to reduce opportunities for corruption. Combined with a cheap labor force that speaks English is a great recipe for anybody looking to manufacture goods at a cheap price. Escaping the US-China trade war is a side benefit for Apple.

techie128··on Stripe's API was down
Agreed. What I said does not protect against BGP blackholing or ISP screw ups rendering services inaccessible. However, all I was pointing out that services could be built for higher uptime than what is currently being offered.
techie128··on Stripe's API was down
If you have Cassandra (or Cassandra-like DB) running across multiple DCs, you can definitely mitigate node, rack and even a DC failure for a 100% up time.

Just because a node or DC fails doesn't mean there is a user visible impact.
