techdevangelist··on How Is NordVPN Unblocking Disney+?
I think the main catch would be this new ASN would become known by the very companies/services trying to ban non-consumer IP blocks. Providers like DigitalOcean, AWS, and Azure are non-eyeball networks, so you see more bots and geo-shifting users (nonUS users trying to avoid a geo block by Disney for example). Any IP announced by the ASN would be known by looking at the bgp announcement and listed/blocked.

Hiding bots and other users among the huge Comcast & Spectrum IP blocks makes it harder for media companies to block them. It’s just how do you legitimately buy a bunch of consumer connections, or get users to install software to share their consumer connection, hence the NordVPN clients I assume.

This would be a great candidate for automatic light/dark mode with the prefers-color-scheme css option.
techdevangelist··on California power outage triggers chaos in science labs
I was going to say something similar, maybe this is the core critical components that have to say running for life safety.

Otherwise I routinely see single racks pulling 15-25kWh albeit vastly overloaded. But that’s the norm now.

It’s really difficult to beat diesel for many reasons, sure solar + batteries is with enough for though. But what if you need to augment beacause some were damaged in a weather event, IR dropped us a secondary genset next day after a tornado (mind you precontracted). Other fuel options exist but you can’t rely on piped natural gas in a highly active seismic zone (as they shut off entire areas after an earthquake to limit leaks). Diesel is stable for long periods, if it’s inundated with washer can be mechanically separated, then you add on the safety aspect of it being less ‘energetic’ than gasoline.

Not saying there aren’t other options, just the one most businesses have opted for, and has the best ‘vendor’ support (plenty of fuel companies to deliver, rental agencies to arrange the delivery, and companies that Veratis that setup the building side needs)

They are easy to acquire, as long as everyone else doesn’t need one at the same time. Heck even just securing a diesel delivery during a widespread event can be impossible, which is why you need some onsite for multiple days (if possible).

Sadly you need to plan for these well in advance and be willing to sink significant resources.

techdevangelist··on High-severity vulnerability in vBulletin is being actively exploited
vB has made heavy use of eval() for years, it’s used thru the bbcode parser, template and plugin features. I haven’t dug into the vB5 code base much, my heavy use ended in the 4 range. But this hasn’t been the first time it’s been exploited, and I suspect won’t be the last. When 5 was released we were already turned off to vB and it’s overall direction and settled on sticking with v4 until Xenforo matured more (the creators of which were original developers/architectes of vB 1,2,3.

Agreed, and I’ve appreciated RH putting in effort like Software Collections to bring more modern versions of tools. The implementation may leave a bit to be desired of SCL packages but it could be worse with 3rd party RPMs.
techdevangelist··on Exim – remote attacker can execute programs with root privileges
cPanel I believe still utilizes Exim which I suspect drives that number up.
techdevangelist··on Installing Debian Linux 2.0 (1998)
Yea getting winmodems to work on Windows was a chore good luck anywhere else. The era of managing irq’s, jumpers for cpu clock multipliers, and if there was the tiny twist in middle of a floppy ribbon to make it bootable couldn’t end soon enough.
techdevangelist··on MoviePass reportedly changed passwords to prevent users from seeing films
At the very least I smell potential fraud with the trip wire limits then associated messages saying no more screen times and password resets. CFAA could potentially be applied but I think since it’s their platform and done by an authorized agent it may be a stretch. But some state AGs could read into these actions and open wider lines of investigation, and compel other evidence. If this is what they are okay talking about, think of the other dirty deeds that were kept hush hush..
techdevangelist··on Hitman Runner Convicted of Mob Murder on GPS Watch Data
From what I understand the tracker data was from an earlier time when they were gathering intel on the target.
