techbio··on The Stealthy Politics of Urban Advertising
Some exceptional buildings (there are many, but not most) transcend their property/production purpose to have positive visual and aesthetic or other value (historical, innovative etc.) and be beautiful or something on their own; not visual pollution.

But they were not built this way for no reason, assuredly the architects, builders, owners, and affiliates gain some goodwill/awareness/advertising value from an important structure in a meaningful location.

Same then for every other structure, only at 10-100X less revenue per hundred impressions. Property is advertising. To the left.

> Is there a good scientific explanation why quantum phenomena are required to explain consciousness?

I think it is simpler than all that: quantum phenomena belong to our description of reality, as also does consciousness.

Assuming both are valid and explanatory, it should not be a surprise to see overlap. However, if one believes that one or both of these is false, the question is not to explain one using what we know of the other, but to disprove it using what we believe we know to be true.

Is consciousness required to explain quantum phenomena, or simply our only means?

techbio··on Unfolding the Hippocampus
Simultaneously and in parallel, is anyone MRI-scanning hundred of generations a year of nematodes and fruit flies to build basic physical correlations in neurology and genetics? Structurally, much simpler and cheaper, biochemically very similar.
techbio··on Why is China smashing its tech industry?
This is the definition of value I am familiar with--whatever the buyer will pay.

I am unsure what colloquial definition GP refers to as the counterpoint. Surely you aren't both suggesting sense and dollars are non-overlapping?

techbio··on Dollar stores make up nearly half of all new store openings in the U.S.
Dollar General is not a dollar store any more than Target is a target store.
techbio··on Why is China smashing its tech industry?
Can you expand on this insight about weighting value and its predictive power or share a source?
techbio··on The recycling myth: A plastic waste solution littered with failure
Unfortunately there is no winner take all solution for environmental impacts, it is a many-fronted theater.

So better plastics solidified and made useful than released as fumes, but your decisive line of argument omits the carbon sequestration possible with large-scale paper for one thing (just not the kind that spills outflow directly into waterways), and the general degradation of the living oceans.

techbio··on Single-celled organism has evolved a natural mechanical computer
Possibly a new dimension of computation indeed, but interesting for many other reasons in all types of cells.

Microtubules are highly prevalent, reconfigurable, dynamic structures.

Did you know that inside a cell there is over 20atm of pressure? That's some force. Even an abacus in every cell changes the game.

techbio··on Blizzard Recruiters Asked Hacker If She ‘Liked Being Penetrated’ at Job Fair
"Invasive testing" fits for me, and it's not cute.
techbio··on Blizzard Recruiters Asked Hacker If She ‘Liked Being Penetrated’ at Job Fair
Call it "invading". For a bonus, it seems more accurately less of a win and more of a sin.
techbio··on Blizzard Recruiters Asked Hacker If She ‘Liked Being Penetrated’ at Job Fair
From your side, you are right, and hearing it spoken of when you do not see it could make a person question the narrative.

Just to say though, it seems probable to me that 99% of twenty-something women in the industry will have a misogynistic experience to recount. Perspective is relative.

techbio··on Blizzard Recruiters Asked Hacker If She ‘Liked Being Penetrated’ at Job Fair
Good point, but then the new word shows up on an adult-themed t-shirt.
techbio··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
That's a million great poaching opportunities for recruiters if there's a better deal.

For scale, one in how many Americans is an Amazon consumer?

techbio··on Blizzard Recruiters Asked Hacker If She ‘Liked Being Penetrated’ at Job Fair
The t-shirt she chose to wear to a career event showing a [sexual] double-entendre is not asking for abuse obviously, but demanding some kind of attention. The entire video game business has a [lack of] culture problem. That the Blizzard boys went so far in embarrassing themselves is theirs to own.

Edit: Flagged? I'm sorry. If you read the article, the inappropriate jokes were targeted to her t-shirt reading "Penetration Expert". This is stupid on top of stupid.

techbio··on Mining firm Rio Tinto sorry for destroying Aboriginal caves (2020)
This is what it must mean when a corporation is "sorry", because no other sense can be made of such a statement.

Anthropomorphism has taken an evolutionary leapfrog past people.

techbio··on A soil-science revolution upends plans to fight climate change
If by "we" you mean everyone, no we can't.

Edit: assuming you know it's too late not to start, propose something other than magic wand obvious solutions.

techbio··on Google results for PHP tutorials contain SQL injection vulnerabilities
> Several of these results were, simply put, SEO-optimized baloney.

My experience in the past couple of years as well, and not just for PHP. I wonder if anyone has looked into tutorial results with and without privacy controls to see if the quality is meaningfully different.

techbio··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
Might be broadened by the overlap of symptoms. Schizophrenia in particular is a broad classification of different kinds of similarly presenting thought disorders. A person exhibiting textbook symptoms but with the cause more directly attributable to use and social disruptions might have a vastly different prognosis and course of treatment than a more genetic or organic case.
techbio··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
But aren't the scare quotes necessary to the statement? Ie. it can appear that a "trigger" is actuated, because we do not know what is happening and reach for metaphor?

Having more meat at less cost, among other foods, seems to be a plainly plausible cause for gaining weight.
