tech-no-logical··on Ask HN: Who are your favorite poets?
not really a favorite poet, but a favorite poem : 'Cat in an empty apartment'

  Die--you can't do that to a cat.
Since what can a cat do
  in an empty apartment?
  Climb the walls?
  Rub up against the furniture?
  Nothing seems different here
  but nothing is the same.
  Nothing's been moved
  but there's more space.
And at nighttime no lamps are lit.

  Footsteps on the staircase,
  but they're new ones.
The hand that puts fish on the saucer
  has changed, too.

  Something doesn't start
  at its usual time.
  Something doesn't happen
  as it should.
  Someone was always, always here,
  then suddenly disappeared
  and stubbornly stays disappeared.

  Every closet's been examined.
  Every shelf has been explored.
Excavations under the carpet turned up nothing.
  A commandment was even broken:
  papers scattered everywhere.
  What remains to be done.
  Just sleep and wait.

Just wait till he turns up,
just let him show his face.
Will he ever get a lesson
on what not to do to a cat.
  Sidle toward him
  as if unwilling
  and ever so slow
  on visibly offended paws,
and no leaps or squeals at least to start.

  -- Wislawa Szymborska
it never fails to get to me.
tech-no-logical··on NTP's Fate Hinges on 'Father Time'
how does this relate to alternative implementations like openNTPd ? this guy maintains the reference implementation of the protocol I guess ?
tech-no-logical··on What are your favourite sci-fi books?
didn't expect anyone to mention this book... but it's been a long time favorite of mine. I first read it in my teens, when I was heavily into asimov, vance, dick and other classics :)
tech-no-logical··on [dead]
a company giving away its product for free, while their privacy and transparency pages are both 404. I think I'll pass on that one.
tech-no-logical··on LibreOffice under the hood: progress to 4.4.0
probably a legacy from stardivision, the german makers of the original staroffice, which became openoffice.org, which in turn became libreoffice. it's origins go back to when the z80 was a 'current' processor :)
tech-no-logical··on Full-fledged FPS in WebGL
nice. loved the pac-man monsters :) the pointer-lock doesn't seem to work in chrome, but works in firefox (with a bit of a hassle from the context-menu that also pops up)
tech-no-logical··on The growing irrelevance of MongoDB
I think it should be

tech-no-logical··on Massively Multiplayer Online Drum Machine
my firefox (latest beta) says :

"The buffer passed to decodeAudioData contains invalid content which cannot be decoded successfully"

and produces no sound on win 7 64 bit. chrome works flawlessly.

tech-no-logical··on The Pirate Bay down, forever?
a band. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_KLF

they retired at the top of their fame, and burned stuff both before (their own albums) and after (a million pounds).

tech-no-logical··on Butterfly Player – Open-source music player for Windows
no. I installed it, but there's no way to input a url.
tech-no-logical··on 1k minecraft
same on FF34 / win 7.

tech-no-logical··on Broadsheet: Create Stylish Immersive Pages
same here (latest ff beta). all the 'try before you buy' templates result in a non-interactive grey surface. no errors on the console.
tech-no-logical··on Flip – A ReactJS Game
playing this without really thinking it through, so my remarks may be off.

the mechanics are unusual in the sense that they're deceptively simple but cunningly difficult at the same time... challenging.

becoming stuck (in level 3, e.g. when reaching the spaceship without the key) is annoying. could be that you intended this, but for a casual game it would feel better if that couldn't happen.

related : having to grab the mouse to click the 'replay' button is annoying too. maybe just use a key ? same goes for the 'next' / 'prev' button. when the spaceship flies away it triggers an annoying (growing) scrollbar at the bottom of the page. some overflow: hidden missing somewhere ?

overall I like the concept. someone else already suggested making the board larger, which I completely agree with.

tech-no-logical··on YouTab: Automatically get chords for music
I just checked the competition, they still suffer the same problems you're facing : most videos simply won't load, a lot because they can only be viewed on youtube, some are blocked (for me at least), some are gone.

I guess society isn't ready yet.

tech-no-logical··on YouTab: Automatically get chords for music
I agree that the site is DMCA compliant, you've covered that. lyrics added by the users for tracks that musixmatch hasn't got the rights to will probably still be a problem. the chords are, I guess, no problem, as you can't copyright a chord progression.

the big problem however is the embedding of material from soundcloud and youtube. while strictly speaking it might be legal, the total experience of your site is severely impacted by the fact that youtube continually removes video's that violate _their_ TOS, leaving orphaned tabs. or, as I myself noticed, blocks embedding of most tracks (at least for me, there's probably some geo-blocking going on).

I really like the interface, I'm very impressed with how well it works for most tracks (and fast too), but by making it dependent on difficult external parties like youtube and soundcloud I don't see it taking off. I've had very similar usability problems with all other projects that attempt similar things.

edit : I'll check back for the updated TOS later. I'm curious what they'll say...

tech-no-logical··on YouTab: Automatically get chords for music
fair enough.

but the criticism stands : it's hardly useful for me as every 2 out of 3 songs will not work. probably because I'm in europe, but still. and I can't suggest alternatives, there aren't any with copyright laws being what they are.

tech-no-logical··on YouTab: Automatically get chords for music
oh come on, 90% of what's on the site now is in clear violation of the TOS I quoted. or are you suggesting that, for example, user 'Descending' owns the rights to 'Help' from the Beatles ?

how do you explain these rules in regard to this :

YouTab also requires that the music videos that you attach to your tablature shall be your own or videos which you are licensed to display; for example, you are not allowed to embed an unlicensed Metallica video and write down your tabs for that song.

true, you have covered yourself by stating these things in your TOS, but after removing all videos that are not in accordance, you're left with an empty site.

seriously, from a technical point of view I love projects like these, but I cannot see how this could ever work in the long run if it's dependent on youtube. at least not as long as large record companies exist and enforce their copyrights as they tend to do.

tech-no-logical··on YouTab: Automatically get chords for music

sorry this video has been removed from youtube
sorry this video has been removed from youtube
sorry this video has been removed from youtube
sorry this video has been removed from youtube
ad nauseum. nice project, but doomed to fail because of this.

why the downvotes ? even their TOS sort of acknowledges it will not work :

YouTab respects your copyrights and the copyrights of others and therefore requires that you only annotate tablature of your own music or of music that you are licensed to annotate (such as public domain music).

tech-no-logical··on Adblock Plus gives Facebook users a way to block its extended tracking efforts
I tried requestpolicy, I found it too cumbersome to use. with adblock edge, I subscribe to 2 lists and I'm done. I'd try again if they adopt such a feature.
tech-no-logical··on Adblock Plus gives Facebook users a way to block its extended tracking efforts
just use adblock edge :

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-edge/

tech-no-logical··on Adblock Plus gives Facebook users a way to block its extended tracking efforts
true. but as long as site owners use ad-providers that track me, I don't really care. I will gladly reconsider my blocking ads if and when ad-providers are used that don't do this.

maybe site-owners should pressure ad-providers to provide a track-free service ?

tech-no-logical··on Adblock Plus gives Facebook users a way to block its extended tracking efforts
and to all site owners moaning about people using adblock : this is why we can't have nice things. as long as policies like this exist, I'll block anything remotely able to track me.
tech-no-logical··on Real-time lightning map, worldwide
not in this case, as blitzortnung is german ;)
tech-no-logical··on Show HN: Wavepot – Digital audio workstation of the web
it's probably me, but I get nothing... - ff (latest beta) : waveform thingy works, no sound - chrome (latest beta) : no waveform, no sound - IE (11) : nothing
tech-no-logical··on Tor Challenge
I've been running an exit-node for over 5 years. first on xs4all, now on ziggo. no problems so far... I guess that makes me a target then...
tech-no-logical··on TorCoin
I've been running a small exit node for over 5 years, with three providers, none of which have complained (I'm in the netherlands, that might matter).

there's one disadvantage though : a lot of sites refuse my ip because it's an exit node. which is no problem because all my own traffic runs through a vpn anyway...

tech-no-logical··on Please rate our new landing page.
confusing. the background video got my attention but didn't really tell me what you're selling. clicked the get started button... create an account ? no. so back. looked closely at the text to find out it's a browser extension... that was the bit of info I would've liked to see earlier...
tech-no-logical··on Read Hacker News faster
I get an error in latest ff beta :

    "Bootstrap's javascript requires jQuery" (main.js line 160)
which is weird, because jquery is included... must be something on my part, but I see no reason (according to firebug jquery is loaded before main.js)

also, when loading the first article :

"Load denied by X-Frame-Options: https://code.google.com/p/omaha/ does not permit cross-origin framing."
tech-no-logical··on Shadow DOM
I don't block cookies by default and acko.net doesn't offer me any. it does however cause firefox to notice me of an insecure javascript operation.
tech-no-logical··on Shadow DOM
I guess the site itself avoids the dom by being non-functional in my latest firefox. well done, I say.
