tdons··on Instagram kept deleted photos and messages on its servers for more than a year
We know that HN is visited by a fair share of Facebook employees.

Can some of you weigh in (anonymously?) on this topic? Do you guys do hard deletes of user data instead of just soft deletes? If so, are logs or backups kept? For how long?

In other words: if I'm a user of $POPULAR_SERVICE and I delete my account at time t0, is there a t1 > t0 after which every trace of my data is gone from the platform?

My (cynical) guess is no, but I hope I'm wrong :)

I (and many other engineers I know) do this too, and for a good reason. It's a simple system.

Same reason I don't use WiFi at home but ethernet: it's simple.

tdons··on Mathematicians discover a perfect way to multiply (2019)
Respect :). I Implemented Karatsuba a while ago and wondered if an even faster method would be available. It is!

I admire the perseverance, grit, and intelligence needed to crack hard nuts like this.

tdons··on The Future of Online Identity Is Decentralized
We have this in The Netherlands but it hasn't picked up yet. It's promising though: https://privacybydesign.foundation/irma-explanation/

The system is attribute based and requires an 'authority' to give you the attribute. After that the attribute lives on your phone and you can give it out to organisations or businesses asking for....:

  - your name
  - whether you are >= 18
  - your address
  - etc.
What's great about it is:

  - you can give out minimal information
  - no 3rd party/intermediary required after you've received an attribute

Thank you, this is fabulous. You've managed to put into words a feeling that (I think) many people share but have trouble expressing clearly.

Let's say your project were written in Java. What if I asked you to rewrite the project in the C language because Java reminds me too much of the colonial period [1] and it is very painful for me because my ancestors suffered during this time.

Would you be open to that request? I mean, whatever, right? Who cares? Just do it. It might help me and perhaps others because to us Java is very painful. Oh, also, if you need an additional reason, Java is sexist because its file header starts with 0xCAFEBABE, another reason to switch to C.

tdons··on Mist Showers: Sustainable Decadence? (2019)
What if you also drop the soap, that way you need even less water.

I'm not trolling by the way, I believe soap mostly isn't necessary. I'm interested in why everyone uses it when they take a shower.

tdons··on One Billion People Will Suffer from “Unliveable” Heat Within 50 Years
You are right when you say: it could also be worse.

I concede that it's impossible to disprove my assertion, but it might still be true: we just don't know. I'm arguing that we should embrace the uncertainty and accept that we can't know certain things.

These sorts of articles can cause immense stress in people and are therefore doing harm.

The uncertainties involved are fundamentally unquantifiable. We think we can know, but we make only educated guesses. We should keep doing that, but communication about the results should be honest. A title that states "one billion people will suffer" isn't that.

tdons··on One Billion People Will Suffer from “Unliveable” Heat Within 50 Years
Questioning these types of assertions isn't appreciated. I'm already being downvoted in this thread because of it.
tdons··on One Billion People Will Suffer from “Unliveable” Heat Within 50 Years
I was merely claiming that we have an incomplete understanding of the climate system, and because of that we shouldn't make these types of claims and state them with absolute certainty like the article is doing.

Surely we can agree there?

tdons··on One Billion People Will Suffer from “Unliveable” Heat Within 50 Years
Could it not be the case that there are surprising mechanisms or feedback loops that we do not currently know about; mechanisms that could put a damper on these predictions?

More generally: aren't these multi-decade predictions simply hubris? The climate is a very complex non-linear system with tons of inputs and interactions. There's many examples of these types of systems for which our predictions fall short or are extremely inaccurate: weather over multi-week timescales, the economy, even the recent Covid-19 models.

Am I the only one that thinks we should be a little more careful and conservative when putting out these sorts of dire predictions?

tdons··on Uber is laying off 3,700, as rides plummet due to Covid-19
Our economy is in the toilet. Large parts of it at least (that aren't very visible).

We'll see the wave of defaults and bankruptcies in a couple of months.

tdons··on The crash of the global flower trade
You should take back the part where you accuse an entire nation of not caring about people dying. It's unbecoming.

The Dutch just don't want mutualisation of debt. That's not strange at all.

tdons··on Hague court orders Dutch state to pay out over colonial massacres
From the article:

> The court recognised in its ruling that the sums granted the relatives of victims were “disproportionate” to the suffering caused.

tdons··on A mother and son who unraveled a geographic hoax
I don't know. And I'm fine with that.

We don't yet have answers to every question.

tdons··on A mother and son who unraveled a geographic hoax
Okay. But we can demonstrate the existence of gravity. Let go of an apple and watch it drop.

I have yet to see a demonstration of divine intervention.

> if "a billion people" say it's true, it must be true.

Religion is a great example of this. I have yet to see proof of a god.

tdons··on Radical surgery permanently extends your legs
Are there also downsides?

Will my legs be more prone to breaking (for instance, when jumping)?

Will my gait, or my balance be altered? Will this become a non-issue over time?

I'm curious.

tdons··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
We use k8s at $JOB so I decided to look into it on my own time. A wasted weekend trying to install it and a profanity laden #ragequit later I moved all my stuff over to OpenBSD instead.

Never been happier.

In the case of k8s: ignorance truly is bliss. Keep it simple people.

I don't know man, the world is a big place and growing trees parallelizes nicely.

Cut them down and make buildings out of them, land area problem solved. The fresh water cost I don't buy, there's rain man, it's free.

tdons··on Personal CO2 Removal as a Service
Plant a tree.
tdons··on Privacy critique of WhatsApp
I'd like to stop using WhatsApp but it's complicated.

The foothold it has over here in Europe (The Netherlands) is enormous. Everybody uses it, there's even neighbourhood watches that use it, see: https://cdn.nieuws.nl/media/sites/305/2015/12/05153708/atten...

Any advice? Just pull the plug and pay the social cost?

tdons··on The Disneyfication of a University
Well written piece.

I've been subjected to these kinds of 'workshops', and, like the author I too resent them. What's interesting is that many people (a majority?) in my organisation hated it too.

Why do sessions like this keep getting organised? Why don't employees unite and speak up? What's in it for management? Deep down they must know that for most people attending, it doesn't add any value (it detracts).
