If you have clicked into here wondering what is wrong with with me, the answer is I attempted to be arch or funny but am terrible at it. Or you are. No good way to tell.

tclancy··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Walk me through this. If any other country had built a school on something that used to be something else and then all the children in the school were killed, that country would get “clowned”. I don’t really want to live in a world where we dunk on anyone for not considering the ramifications of where they build a school lest the kids get murdered.

Here’s hoping your house is built on a former set of red and white concentric circles.

I read it like they were the only ones who could protect us from the leopards so they pace at the edge of the fire all night, selflessly keeping us safe. While pocketing a sweet wedge of VC cash.

You are getting sleepy.
tclancy··on Claude Opus 5.5
I learned the former from Waylon Jennings and the Dukes of Hazzard.
tclancy··on Claude Opus 5.5
It combines the elegance of LinkedIn-speak with the humbleness of desk-bound people who speak in military metaphor.

I think you missed the “pointless” part of the argument, such as it was.

tclancy··on Noodle Gallery- Open-source, self-hosted alternative to Google Photos and Immich
Immich has an app that just needs to connect to an Immich server, which this would effectively be. It does the background sync, though I don't think it does the delete part.
tclancy··on Noodle Gallery – Self-hosted photo and video manager forked from Immich
Thank you for that -- the workaround for multiple users sharing a set of photos plus their own stuff is the one thing that's kept my family away from adopting it.
tclancy··on How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)
Why?
tclancy··on How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)
Just so they could penalize it, obviously.
tclancy··on GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher
You are absolutely right.
tclancy··on GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher
Wow, a blast from the past about the future.

tclancy··on “The Secret Life of Circuits” is here
This thing is a tome. And I like it like that. Functions as a nerdy coffee table book when not in use.
tclancy··on AI is an elite crime spree
Cool story bro.

>Literally nobody cares about antitrust except antitrust lawyers.

I can't tell if you're playing a character here based on your username or something sadder. Breaking up trusts and monopolies was still seen as an important thing up until Silicon Valley in the 2000s started generating copy about how that may be dated thinking for Internet-native companies.

Look how well that's worked out.

Think you’re begging the question with that final phrase.
tclancy··on Every invoice in Brazil's economy runs on SOAP 1.2
Ha, well thank you for giving me a much less painful SOAP experience than the usual one back in the 2000s. I’d first used it with .Net 1.1 or 2.0.
tclancy··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Oh very much so. By the time I finally got to a hazardous waste day early enough to make it tolerable, the milk crate full of various poisons and extremely flammable toxins I had would have put low-level terrorist orgs to shame. I might as well have had a glowing suitcase.
tclancy··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
>hazardous waste is open a few days a month

Are you serious? Here in NH it's either once or twice a year. I call it "The real Father's Day" and plan to have a couple of podcasts or similar queued up for the wait in line.

tclancy··on Missouri governor orders guardrails on Flock cameras and ALPRs
Well, I'll be damned, we finally did something smart in our state legislature. This definitely feels like a "The worst person you know made a good point", but that's me assuming Jason Osborne was in favor.
tclancy··on Every invoice in Brazil's economy runs on SOAP 1.2
Clearly you never worked in soap. The whole idea was “web services but not easy”.
tclancy··on WangNet – 1.8 MB, zero-dependency Numberwang adjudication in 11 languages
My favorite line, especially as an American because I can say it out loud without the person getting upset since they have no frame of reference. And other Anglophiles I could probably handle.
tclancy··on WangNet – 1.8 MB, zero-dependency Numberwang adjudication in 11 languages
In some bases it is. Numberwang!

With All Due Love,

tclancy··on Every invoice in Brazil's economy runs on SOAP 1.2
It’s been a long time since I had to work in SOAP. Does https://soapy.sourceforge.net/ atill work? That would make things easier to automate if so. This is awesome work.
tclancy··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
This is the same as being mad at sports fans for complaining about the owners. No one would be anywhere near twitter, especially since it got covered in Elon’s ketamine cologne, if not for the users. Thinking the corporation profiting from those users should be free to change the deal on a whim is not a good look.
tclancy··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
I would suggest that last line is both wildly indulgent and dangerous. Inventing reasons why someone being completely wrong is actually helpful is a level of freedom no one really deserves.
tclancy··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
I love that and want to know what that voice sounds like.

Also I want to add some Claremont era flourish to my response, ja?

tclancy··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Yeah, I went with just the Safe settings for now as I am leaving for the week and didn’t want the rest of the house to have to fix something.

I am not lumping everyone in, more observing we are still amplifying the signal from radio stations that should have ceased broadcasting years ago.
tclancy··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
Sure, but it is that Christ, Buddha or any of the other incarnations of the same idea? I am right there with you, believe it or not, but don’t John 3:16 the wrong football game.
