tchalla··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Manu tings are reasonable but not done. For example, it seems unreasonable that one country can print any amount of money due to being called the reserve currency and use it to influence countries around the world.

If you want fairness, start from the top and don’t punch down. I’m not against any definitions of immigration but generally most definitions aren’t reasonable. They are just downstream and issues of an upstream systems problem.

tchalla··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
I remember the conversations a few years ago when tech automated many other fields and they asked the same question. What did they do? You could ask them.
tchalla··on I built non-autoregressive decision models with RL a year ago
This is why you shouldn't assume that my comment was a juxtaposition of LLMs in comparison with hand crafted feature ML models. The binary thinking is highly problematic IMO

> The ability to generalize isn’t just about being general purpose, it’s super robust

I work with LLMs daily. 5 of my specialized tasks are outperformed by a custom model than a general purpose frontier model. The performance of my custom models not only beat them but are orders of magnitude low in costs and thus are able to be used by more customers.

tchalla··on I built non-autoregressive decision models with RL a year ago
There’s a middle option. Once you figure that out, you’d soon understand my point today or tomorrow. I’ve been in this field for 21 years and I use LLMs everyday. I also know when to not use them.
tchalla··on I built non-autoregressive decision models with RL a year ago
Anyone who has worked in ML for 10+ years would already know that the usage of LLMs for everything is lazy, wasteful and a high degree of marketing on it.
tchalla··on Global bond yields hit 2008 highs, raising stakes for big borrowers
12% for Japan vs 30% for USA is a huge difference though.
tchalla··on Stay discoverable in search while disallowing AI training
Exactly. I don’t get this. You may decide to not train but your content will still show up in search.
tchalla··on Global bond yields hit 2008 highs, raising stakes for big borrowers
Japan’s debt is mostly held local unlike some other countries.
tchalla··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
2013 - Facebook acquired Israeli startup Onava

2018 - Facebook tells Congress that it uses security app Onavo to analyze what people are doing in other apps

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/12/facebook-explains-to-congres...

Remember the Internet.org and FreeBasics movement which was used to muddy the Net Neutrality waters? Guess which startup was excited about Internet.org

> Onavo’s founders, Guy Rosen (CEO) and Roi Tiger (CTO), are on board with the plan. “We’re excited to join their team,” the two wrote, “and hope to play a critical role in reaching one of Internet.org’s most significant goals – using data more efficiently, so that more people around the world can connect and share. When the transaction closes, we plan to continue running the Onavo mobile utility apps as a standalone brand. As always, we remain committed to the privacy of people who use our application and that commitment will not change.”

tchalla··on How Trail of Bits helps verify the integrity of Signal chats
People like you who equate signal and WhatsApp are also responsible for not making any progress due to ideological stubbornness it’s something that I absolutely despise from a part of HN crowd here.
tchalla··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
It’s not about being in your lane. It’s about approaching things with an open mind plus the desire to solve the problem instead or proving yourself right.

tchalla··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
That was the day of Facebook trying to copy WeChat "One chat to rule them all!" Sure!
tchalla··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
This is something that is always fundamentally misunderstood. Of course, judges can extend courtesy but most modern systems are designed on pretty much the accuser arguing their case against the defender with the judge deciding based on law plus arguments presented in court.
tchalla··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US for fears of 'geopolitical unrest'
Yes but we Germans are too stuck up with our language barriers.
tchalla··on Konrad Zuse Museum shutting down due to lack of funding
I think Zuse is underrated because he worked pretty much alone. The other names and particularly Von Nuemann were prolific collaborators apart from being very good at what they do. There’s probably a takeaway from how this turned out.
tchalla··on My Business Is Dying
> Sharing revenue data is a good way to get attention on Twitter, but for this business the Twitter attention doesn’t really translate into sales. I stopped sharing revenue data because a lot of people started using AI to build their own bank statement converter applications.

A lot of build in public is theater with MRR porn which has no basis in ground reality creating noise. Now the agentic world is coming after it. Build in public has turned into display in public these days.

tchalla··on Software engineering is about managing complexity
I did. I am adding on to your argument. In general, a reply to you never needs to be a counter. It can be a build up too.
tchalla··on Software engineering is about managing complexity
Software engineering was never about writing "just" code. Simply writing code was not enough in most business environments.
tchalla··on France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026
Germany is planning for 2035. Everything is now pushed to 2035 - rail infrastructure , digitisation, removal of fax as an official method etc.

tchalla··on Dutch regulator fines Uber $966M for automating driver suspensions
I know what you are referring to but it doesn't. Read carefully again, it's carefully word smithed. The case is between 2018-2022. Uber says they have human review now that doesn't mean they did have human review in that time period.
