tboughen··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
If Apple are going for a luxury EV, then they ‘only’ have to get better than Tesla. I hear Tesla still don’t have build quality sorted, and issues can take months to get fixed.

I imagine more practically minded luxury car buyers would jump at an Apple car that met Tesla on the performance front and exceeded them on the ease of ownership.

tboughen··on A 5-story building in China 'walks' to new location
My favourite example is the Indiana Bell Telephone Company headquarters in Indianapolis. It was moved 46m while operating, and retained connection to all grid utilities including electricity, gas, and sewage...

tboughen··on Analyzing the Design of Unusual Japanese Butter Tableware
Kerry gold is glorious. Last time I was in France, all 20 types of butter In the local supermarket were disappointing because they were all unsalted.
tboughen··on Charles Lindbergh is the reason the U.S. doesn't have cameras in the courtroom
Last time I heard the Hawthorne effect discussed (on BBC radio 4), two psychologists explained that the lighting changes were enacted on a Monday, and lasted for the week. The increase in productivity detected on the Monday was then attributed to the change in lighting from the previous Friday.

Despite this seeming like a classic case of conflating correlation with causation, and the workers simply being more productive due to being more rested.

The psychologists then concluded that although this wasn’t evidence for the Hawthorne effect, the effect was still real. I turned off the radio.

tboughen··on Cruise (GM) receives permit for fully driverless cars
Excellent question. And what if the other party, at fault or not, is not a driver? What if they are a pedestrian or a cyclist? What if they are alone, incapacitated and need medical help?
tboughen··on Why Your First House Is A Liability
I don’t know what German tenancy laws are, but I suspect that they give the renter much more protections than Americans. This affects incentives.

Here in the U.K. I wanted to make sure we owned a house before having children because I wanted to mitigate the risk of being in a rental and given 2 months to to find a new home because the owner wanted to sell.

tboughen··on iPhone unit sales have been declining steadily for 5 years
I was disappointed that the article ends with “ Apple is losing new iPhone users at a drip-drip-drip pace” without considering how long a user is keeping their phone or why.

I would have thought the number of iPhone users continues to rise even though annual unit sales are falling, due to the longevity of the devices.

I’m typing this on my nearly 3 year old iPhone X and don’t intend to replace it until 2021 at the earliest (and then give it to my son!).

tboughen··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
My understanding of the 2018 CLOUD act is that a US headquartered cloud vendor must hand over subpoenaed customer data even if the datacentre is outside the USA.

tboughen··on Zoom needs to clean up its privacy act
I’m interested to hear the type of institution and age range of students with whom you are having 1 to 1 video calls. I’m a teacher in an 11-18 secondary school in the U.K., and we have been instructed to avoid 1 to 1s with students as a safeguarding risk.

I’m not casting any aspersions here, I’m only interested in comparing notes with a fellow teacher.

tboughen··on BMW’s new flat logo is everything that’s wrong with modern logo design
Ironically the least solid, least reliable car I have ever owned was a Toyota. After 8 years it was very poor. Other, older, cars I have enjoyed more reliability with have included a Honda, a Kia, a Fiat and a Lada.
tboughen··on Bob Iger, the man who animated Disney
Bob Iger and Steve Jobs were very close friends. I heard an interview of Bob Iger on BBC Radio 4 this afternoon where he spoke at length about his friendship with Steve Jobs https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000b0c9#play
tboughen··on Online installment loans have taken the subprime market by storm
I think the charge per hour aspect reflects the amortised cost of engaging in the activity.

Books can be free if borrowed from a library - but ownership has an ‘hourly cost’

Mind sports like chess have an insanely low hourly cost, but regular sports that involve consumables like trainers have an hourly cost.

Music is free if you sing, but otherwise involves buying and maintaining an instrument. Strings, for example are consumables.

tboughen··on Superfast Nike shoes are creating a problem
I would argue that the most salient point is that without technological spinoffs, sport is not very useful in the long term. If we create the conditions to encourage technology transfers to society, humanity benefits in the long run from a short term spectacle.

Specifically, the rules of Mornington Crescent are made up as you go along.
tboughen··on Americans Are Using Less Steel, Paper, Fertilizer, and Energy
While your point is true on a basic level, I think The parent’s point is on to something.

There must be a level of economic production that falls below the level of emission that can be absorbed without contributing to climate change. Furthermore in <1billion years everything on earth dies anyway (due to an expanding, ageing, sun) - so it is sustainable to use <1billionth of non-renewable resources.

tboughen··on Why Most of America Is Terrible at Making Biscuits
Dual carriageways don’t just carry motorised traffic. Bicycles can legally use them, even though cars will be travelling at up to 70mph. They are distinct to motorways, which also have a maximum speed of 70mph but a minimum speed (in free flowing traffic) of 50mph, making cycling illegal on them.
tboughen··on Why We Need Innovative Nuclear Power
Though if owned self driving cars are used we have to choose between keeping parking spaces and increased traffic congestion. If there is no parking space, the car will have to arrive at work when you are leaving (which is usually the same time as everyone else) meaning two extra rush hour journeys each day.
tboughen··on Walmart deploys Oculus Go headsets to train its employees
And that would be a fair comparison if before trainers were training with death-by-PowerPoint and now they were doing the same inches from trainee’s eyeballs.

However I’m hopeful that this new medium leads to interactivity by default, furthermore there are first mover advantages to be gained from improved engagement while VR is novel to most users.
