tazzy531··on Ask HN: How do you invest your savings?
Why low-interest account?
tazzy531··on Ask HN: How can I practice Software Design?
Practice. Lots of it.

Also, take your favorite framework and look underneath the covers to see how others have been doing it.

tazzy531··on Nordstrom Finds Cash Register Skimmers
Visa/MasterCard is pushing for EMV/Chip & Pin technology. Previously, the liability of fraud is on the payment network. Visa/MasterCard have announced a liability shift from the payment network to the merchant for fraud if the merchant doesn't adopt chip & pin.

The rollout date is supposed to be Oct 2013.

As an end user, you are not able to protect from this type of fraud. That's why the liability doesn't reside with you.

tazzy531··on Kozmo is relaunching
Kozmo definitely still resonates with me. I was a huge fan of them while I was back in college. Where else can you order Ben & Jerry's at 11PM and get a refund because they were late on their delivery?
tazzy531··on Grand Theft Auto V Earns $800 Million in a Day
I guess it's personal preference, but I've never found the appeal of working in the gaming industry. Seems so tedious.

tazzy531··on Ask HN: Why is Facebook indexed in search engine, against robots.txt rules?
Google doesn't release their IP ranges. It can come from any IP.

No, I didn't register it. Actually, it was still available when I posted that comment.

tazzy531··on Show HN: Contacts finds email addresses
"For every e-mail we show you where we have found it - this way you can check if this is good contact or not."

Adding a comma after "For every e-mail" will make this sentence much more clear.

tazzy531··on Ask HN: Where to go for max profit? High coder salary, low cost of living
How do people here value the opportunity costs of living in a major tech center?

With the lower cost of living of not living in a tech center, you also give up other non-monetary things.

I would think that a lot of innovation comes from being surrounded by like minded people and the access to tech talks and networking events.

tazzy531··on Ask HN: Why aren't there HTTP style standards for invoicing things?
Line item data is the holy grail for a number of players in the payment space. The merchants are understandably guarded about sharing this information.
tazzy531··on Trading Halted in Nasdaq-Listed Securities Due to Technical Issue
The electricity grid is also extremely complicated system that many people don't understand. With any complex system, it grows to beyond the knowledge of the people working in it.

One thing to note is that many of the critical components on the electrical grid is controlled over the network. When I used to build tools for the electricity trading desk, we were handling market bids/asks and scheduling of the power plants.

Here's an example of the stuff that we were dealing with. This is the real time settlement point prices for ERCOT (the grid network in Texas): http://www.ercot.com/content/cdr/html/real_time_spp

We had systems that lay out prices that we were willing to turn on and ramp up power plants. If prices hit a certain point, we were committed to delivering that power. We made these decisions based on economics of the power plant (gas plant vs nuclear vs wind) and other factors (such as weather , time of day, whether the Cowboys were playing that day).

Anyways, my point is that all these systems are interconnected and rather complex. It doesn't take much for an error in one place to bring down a major part of the system.

Take a look at the 2003 Blackout: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_blackout_of_2003

As with any engineering, you're never going to factor away all the breaks. You need to build a system that assume things will break and ensure that it's not catastrophic.

Also, I don't think it's fair to say that Wall Street doesn't understand software. There are some very smart people doing solid engineering there. Neither one of the footnotes that you had in your post support your statement that Wall St doesn't understand software.

tazzy531··on Should have hired a tech co-founder
If he's looking to hire someone, it would help if he included the name of his company or link from his post.

I ended up finding it in small letters under his profile picture.

Also, saying "hiring a co-founder" is basically like saying "hiring a wife". You don't hire either one of those if you're looking for a partner. If you're not looking for a partner, you hire a contractor that will get the job done.

tazzy531··on How to Write the Shit Out of Something
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a writing/blog platform?

I am looking for something that is simple and non-intrusive that I can just put up random thoughts.

Medium and Svbtle seem good and clean, but I don't have an invite.

tazzy531··on Every important person in BitCoin just got subpoenaed by NY financial regulators
Isn't BTC's public ledger public? (https://blockchain.info/)

While it's possible to generate a new wallet to mask who the user is, the transaction flow can be traceable. This seems easier to trace than the flow of money through our banking system.

tazzy531··on I cannot afford to go back to engineering school
>>"Students should be warned that doing a paid internship can negatively impact your ability to finish up paying for school."

Students should be warned that crossing the highway blindfolded if unsafe.

Students should be warned that the stove could be hot if you leave it on.

At some point, people need to take personal responsibility for their action. They need to understand how their actions effect them positively or negatively and balance out those decisions. People need to understand that there is nobody that is going to hand hold them through life.

tazzy531··on The Ivy League Was Another Planet
I make annual donations to my university's alumni fund because I would not be where I am without the opportunities given to me by my choice in college. I also want to give that opportunity to the next under privileged kid.

As others pointed out, wealth redistribution in this case is voluntary.

tazzy531··on Establishing secure connection
Zurb did a tech talk a while back. They found that the drop off rate for one of their long running processes dropped significantly when they added a red bouncy ball as an interstitial for any process that took more than 400 ms.
tazzy531··on Django 1.5 released

tazzy531··on Someone got the natural gas report 400 ms early
Much of the news ia a facade. Reporters often get things like economic numbers and speeches prior to the event.

Things like the State of the Union Address and candidate speeches are usually provided to the press beforehand so that they can package together a story. Next time you watch a major political speech, listen to the pundits prior to the speech. They will talk about all the things that the candidates are about to say.

With regards to economic numbers, there's very good reasons for them to do it this way (pre-released to media and embargoed). If it is not pre-released, reporters will need to take time to report the numbers which gives certain people an advantage.

For example, if you're monitoring Bloomberg for the CPI and the reporter is a slow typer, a person monitoring Reuters would have an advantage over you. Secondly, this forces a situation where reporters are in a hurry to get the numbers out which could potentially lead to errors. With these types of numbers, an error could have impact of billions of dollars in trades.

tazzy531··on Someone got the natural gas report 400 ms early
For a lot of these economic numbers and earnings report, they are provided to news organizations prior to the announcement with instructions that the information cannot be released prior to a certain time.

So, for this example, that time was 10:30AM. The moment it hits that time, the reports get pushed out into the newswires and reported on-air.

This allows the reporters to digest the numbers and figure out how to report it.

tazzy531··on $700/hr for legal advice vs. $100/hr for a top software engineer – why?
I seem to recall reading something about this in Freakonomics.

Price is a signal that people use for quality. Nobody wants to get discount legal advice. When things go well, you save a couple of bucks. When things go bad, you can lose a lot more.

This applies to the medical field too.

tazzy531··on Developer Auction Hires 19 Year Old Thiel Fellow As COO
I understand that's exactly how it works. I was just pointing out the friction points.

The example that I pointed out is a major cognitive leap for an user and you'll see a high drop off rate at that point. For an user like me, I'm happy with my current position for the moment and I haven't thought about what time frame I am looking to make a jump but I may be willing to make a jump if the right opportunity comes along. The question of "When are you available to start a new full-time job?" is a major turnoff for me because I haven't made the cognitive leap to actually apply for a job.

DeveloperAuction should be in the position of collecting as many highly qualified people as they can whether or not they are actively looking. Over time, you can use this database to raise conversion by tempting/teasing the people in your system. Example: "Hey, XYZ, I know you said you aren't currently on the market, but there are these 8 companies that are looking for your EXACT skillset, might you reconsider?" What you'll find is that top talent are never actually "looking" but rather a better offer comes their way.

Also, I'm on the belief that registration forms should not turn people away (via required fields/errors) but rather encourage people to provide more information to gain more functionality (ie "Please tell us these information to submit your profile for review" or "You're 90% of the way there, provide this information to get closer to completing your profile.")

Anyways, just a thought. Best of luck to you guys.
