I kicked off TVL (https://tvl.fyi), a community mostly around monorepo tooling and Nix.

tazjin··on NixOS is not reproducible
You're either assuming that "build environment" includes more things than the author does (it's not exactly a well-defined term), or you're not aware of the sources of non-reproducibility.

It can be simple things (something includes timestamps in binaries, which can be worked around by pinning the time), and complex things (concurrent linking of binaries is done FIFO-style, and different compilation units finish at different times in different runs because of varying processor load).

tazjin··on Why Safety Profiles Failed
> Why did they think that? What did this solution look like?

I don't think they did think that. Having listened to a few podcasts with the safety profile advocates I've gotten the impression that their answer to any question about "right, but how would you actually do that?" is "well, we'll see, and in general there's other problems to think about, too!".

tazjin··on TSMC cuts off client after discovering chips sent to Huawei
You really want hardware DRM to support your political ideology? Good thing this sort of thing has never been abused!
tazjin··on Advancing Memory Safety
I'd guess this is the Carbon people milking 1-2 more promos out of this thing before acknowledging reality and switching to Rust ;)
tazjin··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
I used to use proportional pitch fonts for telega.el and certain document buffers, but I stopped because I find that with Jetbrains Mono (for me personally) there isn't any benefit even for longer text. I'd rather have everything be uniform.

Emacs is perfectly capable of rendering other fonts, too, though.

tazjin··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
Well, if there's no further info then I'm going to speculate you've misconfigured something ;)
tazjin··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
> If text in Emacs looked as pretty as text on the web does

Do you have an example of this? I can't tell any difference for the fonts that I use (with emacs-pgtk). I believe Emacs uses Harfbuzz (same as Chrom{e|ium}).

tazjin··on Buildroot
I really want to like Zig, but man, an unsafe language in 2024 is a hard sell (even to myself).
tazjin··on Rewriting Rust: A Response
Odd post, and it landed me on the Yzena website which is very surreal. It seems to be intentionally hard from the website to figure out what Yzena is or why anyone would want to buy a license for it (or the things it makes?). There was a link to a repo full of perl scripts, though.

According to the website I'm not allowed to ask about this though ;)

tazjin··on Holy Hell, the Social Web Did Not Begin in 2008
ActivityPub, the Fediverse and all of that are great places to go and discuss ActivityPub, the Fediverse and all of that. That's pretty much it.
tazjin··on Show HN: Hosting my website using my C web server
> Any site with a CDN in front of it can do that.

You are vastly overestimating HN front page traffic. Any reasonable system on any reasonable machine with any reasonable link can do this. And I really do mean reasonable: I've served front-page traffic from a dedicated server in a DC, and from a small NUC in a closet at home, and both handled it completely fine.

tazjin··on Radicle 1.0 – A local-first, P2P alternative to GitHub
Federated and P2P models are not the same thing.
tazjin··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
It's in the cgo docs: https://go.dev/src/cmd/cgo/doc.go#L880
tazjin··on Ask HN: How do you choose a hostname for personal devices?
I name hosts after a place in the city I live in that is not where I live. Some hostnames from recent years are khamovnik, whitby, zamalek, sanduny.

It's interesting because it makes me consider places that I don't go to every day, and then rate them for "hostnameability" and so on. Ends up with hostnames being quite memorable.

tazjin··on "Any sufficiently bad software update is indistinguishable from a cyberattack"
Panics are safe though (they're a controlled crash). The safety we're discussing is not related to program stability.
tazjin··on Automerge: A library of data structures for building collaborative applications
Using a closed-source DB is a hard sell.
tazjin··on The only tourist in Moldova
These are most definitely not vodka in Russia.
tazjin··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
Same. I think it's a meme that people keep repeating, and for some fraction of them it's true.
tazjin··on Show HN: Lady Deirdre 2 – Rust Framework for Compilers and LSP Servers
> You cannot use proprietary code in an open source project, and the README says you can. That is fundamentally dishonest.

That doesn't make any sense. There's plenty of open-source Windows/Mac apps, but they don't give you access to Windows/Mac OS itself.

Cat, meet mouse.
tazjin··on A ChatGPT mistake cost us $10k
You don't even have to reject/forbid them, just make their use explicit.
tazjin··on A ChatGPT mistake cost us $10k
Sure, you can follow along the old meme: https://twitter.com/vbhvsgr/status/1419369352164372482

Though in practice in decent languages it's much less likely you'd write your own `any -> any, any`-typed library for whatever (in this case DB interactions), and use a strongly typed one in which this would at least have been a much more explicit mistake to make.

tazjin··on A ChatGPT mistake cost us $10k
A good chance to learn why people who write reliable software almost universally like static type systems.
tazjin··on We improved the performance of a userspace TCP stack in Go
There's nothing related to FFI calls in this quote.

tazjin··on We improved the performance of a userspace TCP stack in Go
Yeah, the optimisations are cool of course, but (maybe due to being unfamiliar with the tool?!) I didn't understand why they can't just `listen(2)`.
tazjin··on Sam Altman-backed nuclear startup signs major data center contract
I'd love to see average hardware utilisation stats for "average Joe" (i.e. not Google) data centres. I don't think they're well-utilised.
tazjin··on 'I was misidentified as shoplifter by facial recognition tech'
I gotta say that I didn't feel very safe on night buses in London, despite the cameras. Besides Brussels, London is the only other city in which I've occasionally felt like I was in danger. It's still a fun city, to be clear, and it probably helps that it isn't a 24/7 city so that you don't end up in weird situations at night too much.

In the end the CCTV doesn't actually prevent anything from happening ...

tazjin··on 'I was misidentified as shoplifter by facial recognition tech'
It's not satire! It really was an official poster campaign (some 20 years ago).
tazjin··on 'I was misidentified as shoplifter by facial recognition tech'
Don't forget the incredible posters that used to be up in London!
