tazard··on Almost Went Back: One Month on NixOS
Not really touched on here, but one thing I found very useful in switching to nix is having your entire system defined in a single repo opens it up for very nice agentic setups. Claude code can now configure my whole system, debug my gpu issues, install software etc, and I can simply git diff to inspect the changes and apply if I agree. On arch sometimes Bluetooth not working or my fingerprint scanner not working becomes some hours of debugging, now I can solve these issues trivially, and if it doesn't work I can restore to an earlier point instead of trails of attempts left through my imperative system
tazard··on Learning another language appears to slow brain ageing by up to 13 years
In my experience, children who excersise a lot become adults who have a far better baseline and exercise comes easier. Children who never do anything become adults for whom excersise is much more difficult. This seems in line with what the article says about learning?

It slows aging, not reverses it. If the first time you learn 4 languages or get into exercise is when you are 70, you don't immediately have the mine and body of a 57 year old

tazard··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
Learning cursive won't automatically give you the dexterity of a dental surgeon, that's just a silly conclusion you have drawn from one example.

What is the downside of learning cursive?

tazard··on Show HN: Uruky (EU-based Kagi alternative) now has Image Search and URL Rewrites
On the settings page it appears that the index is disabled by default and not included in the ordering either. It's a bit confusing here!

The optimal amount of ....... is non zero
tazard··on NFTs died a slow, painful death in 2023 as most are now worthless
Uniswap V3 liquidity pools are managed as NFTs. Not your main point I know, but people often think of NFTs as simply buy and sell art on opensea. A liquidity pool has clear value.
tazard··on Cloudflare is experiencing elevated 5xx responses
Arweave then
tazard··on Ask HN: How do you keep going without burning out?
All due respect, this isn't burn out. This is boredom or being uninspired. It can be a drudge, uninteresting, and procrastinated, but actual burnout is a very different beast.

I have mortgage, wife, kids also and continue to plug along, but know the difference.

tazard··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
A C-to-A adapter came with my laptop dock, but I have never thought of this
tazard··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
Same. Keyboard and mouse
tazard··on The costs of microservices (2020)
1. Isolation

With a well built monolith, a failure on a service won't fail the whole system.

For poorly built microservices, a failure on a service absolutely does being down the whole system.

Not sure I am convinced that by adopting microservices, your code automatically gets better isolation

tazard··on Reddark: Website to watch subreddits going dark
I didn't realize Reddit API development was "forced".

Whether they enjoy it or not is beside the point.

Moderators are providing value to Reddit. If all mods quit, and no one stepped up to take their place, what would happen? Now who deserves to take profit monetarily for that value?

As far as Reddit "development" they should have stopped a long time ago, the site is horrible to use and has been for a long time.

tazard··on Google Search Is Dying (2022)
Less content is fine when the issue is too much junk content. Content would then be created by enthusiasts instead of businesses
tazard··on ESP32 Buyer’s Guide: Different Chips, Firmware, Sensors
I ordered from ali, but this is good to know, thanks
tazard··on ESP32 Buyer’s Guide: Different Chips, Firmware, Sensors
Amazon is giving me prices of $25-$35 for all the esp32, including the hitletgo you mentioned. Ali is $1.5-$2. Amazon also says 2+weeks deliver for many, Ali says 3 weeks. I'm in Canada
tazard··on The Google search I made a minute ago
I absolutely do not believe this. They are trying to maximize shareholder value, not maintain the status quo
tazard··on Bitwarden Acquires Passwordless.dev
I think they meant if they don't like the direction that the Android client takes, i.e. they stop allowing you to change the backend url for example in which case, yes you would need to fork or rewrite it
tazard··on Windows Update is now carbon aware
This was the MacBook strategy
tazard··on LastPass password vaults crackable for $100, alleges 1Password
Why would they claim breach and source code stolen instead of simply and silently hanging over vaults then?

tazard··on Iroh: A New Implementation of IPFS
What do you mean a real website? What difficulties do you see? Lots of sites are hosted on IPFS today
tazard··on Why I use Jellyfin for my home media library
Lots of shows these days have awful audio mixing, going from extremely quiet to extremely loud, and mumbling actors. I use subtitles for these. I don't even notice them on, but if I miss a word I can glance down and see it
tazard··on Celsius Execs Cashed Out $40M in Crypto Before Halting Withdrawals for Customers
I think you missed the whole point. Celsius, centralized exchanges, etc, you don't actually own the crypto. You have an account on a site. If you want to own your crypto and also trade between currencies, your better off using something like Uniswap
tazard··on The Lost Art of Conversation (1899)
I suppose the context of the conversation matters. I always check who left what emojis to get a feeling of the room, but I'm usually in smaller rooms where I know the people. In a larger discord for example with many strangers, I think your right in an individual level, but as the poster of a comment, it still helps gauge the general temperature of the audience, so too speak, regardless of who is on the hook for continued conversation. Not sure I would notice a head nod if I was speaking in a room to hundreds of people anyways though.

I'm not saying it's superior, but I appreciate the nuance's it can bring to online dialog where otherwise many misinterpretations are likely to happen

tazard··on The Lost Art of Conversation (1899)
They are a replacement for non verbal communication such as a head nod, or hand wave, or a smile. Not a way to express a full thought in and of itself.
